am using a Garmin 1350. Only drawback is that sometimes it will hang when finding a particular location but else all is fine. Used it in Malaysia and it works brilliantly..

there is this shop in funan who sells Garmin's.

However, instead of using Garmin's Map's, they put in their own ''locally'' assembled map.

They are just using Garmin's Satellite Technology with their own maps.

Just beware, locally assembled maps are not the most reliable. So just buy the whole Garmin GPS with Garmin Map.

Something to keep in mind...

MFM or MSM are both not so reliable, some address are wrong, and they are not responsible for these error, because they are free.

Satellite Technology is not belong to Garmin. and Garmin's Official SG/MY map is much worse than the MFM or MSM.

Anybody can create their own map for Garmin by using the cgpsmapper reversed engineered (Garmin) compiler. However, it is a monumental task just to create a map even for a small country like Singapore by yourself unless you are a mapping community like Malsingmaps (MSM) and Malfreemaps (MFM) which rely on members to update new tracks and POI. Don't get away with the idea that the official Garmin map of Sg/My is the best map for Garmin sets. This is not the case. The best maps for Garmin are still the free MSM and MFM maps and they can be considered as what you termed as "locally" assembled maps. In term of the latest and most up-to-date roads and POIs, the Garmin map cannot match the MSM and MFM maps.

So, if anyone is looking for a GPS device, Garmin is the way to go. Most of the brands in the markets do not have their own proprietry maps and rely on MSM and MFM for support.

I bought a NUVI 1460 at Challenger since I am a member :-) member price and car park rebate... :-D every discount counts... Chose the NUVI because the screen is big and the counter guy said the processor is faster.

Ok, it is my first GPS. Had a great time keying in all my favorite makan places. And where I had no idea where I was, I used the "where am i" feature to record the coordinates. This works fine for Singapore and Malaysia.

In general, I am fine and pleased with it. I have adapted to the NUVI.

And my experience with it? Sometimes it can take up to 3 minutes before it finds a satellite and if its raining in Singapore, I will just use my gut-feel to find the place because 99 percent of the time, the NUVI will suddenly find a satellite just when I am about to reach my destination. When I go into a subway or between buildings in Shenton Way or under a highway like the stretch of road below Keppel Road, the NUVI will lose the satellite signal.

I have yet to lose my way with the NUVI... LoL whether in Malaysia or Singapore. I used the NUVI to drive all the way to the hotel carpark in KL... small lanes, roads... no problems :-)

Sometimes, I get irritated by the more than a few "recalculating" process especially when I reach a divider! So when the "recalculating" appears, I slow down to a crawl... one of my behavorial adaptations LoL...

Using the bluetooth to connect to the phone is great! Love this "handsfree" feature!

Ok, mind you, I have not learned to update the maps or use any other nifty features...

i really louya pok at driving directions and will confirm go wrong route. definitely buying a GPS.

now here's what i am looking for....

- budget is $350 to $410

- can key in postal code/building name/road name to get to destination

- voice guidance to tell me directions,

eg, to keep left "keep left, turn left in 300m", "keep left, turn left in 200m"

- updated and updatable map

- place where i can buy it

also pls share any other experience you have with GPS and the model you are using

Just upgraded from my old 200w to a 1460. No regrets.

Within your price range, has postal code input, voice guidance and updatable maps.

Available from many places.

The only reason that this was chosen is because the larger screen does not strain my eyes and is easier to glance.

Dont need to spend much more time squinting. The only downside is its large size can cause some fitment issues in your favourite place.

Just saying I use the locally assembled garmin maps. It works ok in singapore, however When We drive to malaysia it is really bad. Very slow to calculate routes and it is not pin-point accuracy. The only GPS that really wow-ed me over was when i was in the UK, we rented a MB E250CGI, and there was sat nav factory fitted. The darn thing was so exact even when we pulled over to a rest stop it had the directions to get out of the rest stop to the highway.

If you really want a top notch GPS, have it factory fitted! :D

I have tried using Garmin while I was driving overseas recently and the country is very big. It is very reliable and helpful. [thumbsup]

1350 user here

there are several issues on some occasions with the GPS

sometimes it'll tell you to turn left then once you've turned it'll immediately say recalculating

then it'll give you a completely different route

on 1 occasion i drove 26km to go from ubi to bugis because the GPS lead me on a huge circle

only realized that i was driving in circles after i passed the same spot the 3rd time

i dont know about other GPS but i'm also not saying that this garmin model isn't good

it is good 90% of the time but once it starts to crack up, you'll need to have patience and some road knowledge
