To_be_advised Neutral Newbie September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 Hm..... After sending my ride into the workshop, i pretty much has to rely on the public transport for the past 12 days. As i am not a really into everyday news kind of guy, my following discussion might be not 100% accurate. Please feel free to correct me. I remembered some time back, there were news about making the public transport (PT) much more convenient in order to have the poplution moving towards the direction of taking public transport. 2 words can sum up my 12 days of PT >> Pretty disgusted. I been changing from bus packed like sardines to trains packed like sardines and yet to other trains packed like sardines. I mean this is really a bad situation cos if you encourage people to go PT, its should not be the expense of comfort. Maybe i have not been taking public transport for quite awhile but i think this should not be the situation. If direction is to steer 70% of the population towards PT, then at least should make it relatively appealing foe these 70% of the population. Seriously speaking, the past 12 days just make me realised that i am pretty fortunate to have a car cos i dont have to go through this sardine feeling on a daily basis. ↡ Advertisement
Mrlau Clutched September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 You cant compare your private car with public transport. The $$ make the difference...
Galantspeedz Turbocharged September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 As agreed with previous poster, that is why you are paying a premium for cars. For drivers that used PT after a long time driving, you confirm not used to it. I been taking PT everyday to work, at times it is squeezy but that is why it is public transport and not private transport. You have to learn to adjust your expectations accordingly... Blue2 1st Gear September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 Part of the PT system was design to cater to the needs of many many moons ago... now the population has somewhat artifically increase... how to cater for it???? The same oso goes for cars....
Damienic 5th Gear September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 The very reason why I took the plunge to buy a car almost 3 yrs ago was due to my dissatisfaction with the public tpt we have in SG...why? i)I used to stay in Clementi and my office then was at IBP Jurong East which is less than 3km away. Despite the proximity, it still take me abt 30 mins to reach office every morning. Very often half of that time was due to waiting for the bus to come...and 15 mins of waiting time for a bus in the morning rush hour is very unacceptable IMO. It is not uncommon for me to wait 20-30 mins for Bus 106 at Somerset Rd of all places to go back to Clementi. Bus frequency still left much to be desired til today (I still take public tpt occasionally) ii)Shall I say half or close to 3/4 of the place that I want to go to is seldom accessible by a direct route ie can be reached by a bus or a mrt ride. Very often than not, either one has to combine 2 bus ride or 1 bus ride with an mrt ride in order to reach a place. As time goes by, pple grew to become discouraged to go to places which is not accessible by a straight MRT or bus ride. iii)More than half of the bus service route in SG is not straight forward. It goes to too many places before ending up at the final destination which you want to go. For example, taking a particular bus service at Tiong Bahru to Jurong East. It will go to pasir panjang road, west coast, teban garden before finally stopping at Jurong East. iv)Sardine phenomenon in MRT trains as described by TS. If there is an increased number in commuters taking MRT, then you just have to increase the frequency. Packed sardines is an indirect result of MRTs not arriving fast enough. Its nearly impossible to find a seat these days in MRT at all hours of the day The cost of personal transport is no doubt high. Sometimes I even feel its to a point of wasting too much money. But then, when I think of the standards and inconvenience of our public tpt, really sian jit pua tat I would still prefer to have my own transport. I really doubt it will see significant improvement not when our public tpt is fully profit oriented.

Sgnick 1st Gear September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 I totally agree with you that our PT system have lots to be improved. I have no issue with packed like sardines PT, as long as everyone who is waiting to get on the MRT/BUS CAN GET ON. But so many times I cannot get on the MRT or bus during peak hours, waste time wait for next train/bus, which could be just as packed. And the stupidest thing is in the MRT station, there is constant announcement "The next train may be packed, pls wait for another train" WTF, if they KNOW that trains are packed, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT and INCREASE the damn frequency instead of announcing that trains are packed, we can all SEE that the trains are packed, no need public announcement to keep repeating. They might as well announce over the public annoncement "We know our service is lousy but we are not going to do anything so pls bear with us, thank you" Problem with or PT companies is profitability is #1, customer satisfaction takes a back seat. So by having less frequent train/bus and packing more people into each, they save more and make more. Why can't the frequency between trains be consistently short like in Tokyo, every 2 mins one train throughout the day regardless of peak or no peak hours? Govt wants us to say bye bye to cars. Now with our lousy PT, I can only say buy buy to cars.
Galantspeedz Turbocharged September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 because raffles parking very expensive, somemore i take PT i reach home in 1/2hr but if i drive i take 1hr I think you may have seen my parents having prata, my mum do drive the car. Akula Turbocharged September 3, 2008 Share September 3, 2008 Like what someone posted, thats why we are paying a very handsome premium on our cars. However would like to add that it can be pretty difficult to balance the numbers so to speak. Too many buses/trains available, costs goes up, resources not maximised. Too little of them and they will always be very crowded etc......Still I feel that adding just that little bit more of capacity during the peak periods will greatly help. The current situation of of public transport still needs to be improved.
