Buddhist - Can't eat beef

But still no one can clearly tell me the real reason..

Cos i have a colleague who says "i am buddhist so i cannot eat beef" when I ask why she said she don't know....

I really think it has got nothing to do with Buddhism. It's just a taoist/chinese farmer derived tradition.

i think Buddhism is fairly straight forward about eating meat (or killing).....doesn't matter if it's a cow or chicken.

I actually asked a monk and he said that "not eating beef" has nothing to do with Buddhism at all and actually is a chinese culture stem from farmers.. because cow help farmers with their farming so in order to protect the cows they dont eat beef.. is this true??

do a google... and you'll find a link like this

Like some mentioned, it's out of respect for the cows and oxes that work hard... nothing to do with Buddhism or taoism.

I see ...so bottom line is that Not eating Beef has nothing to do with religious beliefs but more of a cultural respect for an animal? Like not eating Dogs etc?

Yes, buddha did not dictate the banning of beef but it seems that Buddhism in singapore seem to have evolved and some concepts were mixed. Some practices have spilled over from taoism, which has a very different belief system. This is inevitable considering religions span across time horizons and vast distances.

Some other non-buddhism practices:

burning of joss paper

praying for favours (actually the practice of bowing to buddha is to seek resolute and respect in his teachings. However, many people have come to pray to him as if he's a god, which he does not preach)

Buddhism is fundamentally a philosophy and not a religion.

I think Buddhist don't eat meat. Regardless of what type of meat. But Taoist some of them do eat meet, for example Ji Gong even eat dog meat. I do not know how to classify them. I only followed what my parents believed.

I think you are right. I used to ask the same questions. Answers I got is in the old days, cows are used to help in the field so they dun eat them.

For monk, they also dun eat pork, mutton or other meat ma.

Buddhism is an ancient religion that originated in india...

Cow is considered holy & scared...

Buddhists believe in "mercy" and "karma". Meat eating involves killing...

Thats not all, super "on" Buddhists even refrain from eating onion, garlic and leeks as they are said to increase both sexual desire and anger...

Won't these ppl get sick easily? Cos these are food that will boost your immune system. It's all in the mind. I think religion today and religion of yester years are very different. In the past where medicine and knowledge is scarce ppl take up religion to give themselves a sense of hope and some emotional security. Today's religion I dunno, evil ppl use it to con others and also to fight. Many believers stray away too much from their basis of their faith.

Another one is the believe that the soul of a departed love one will return to their home on the 7th day of their death.
