Carndablues Clutched March 14, 2009 Share March 14, 2009 (edited) I was hoping to land myself a HD Video Camera at the IT show, the two models in particular I am after are the Canon HF100 and the Sony HDR-CX100. At the IT show, the price listed for both is at SGD$1899 and SGD$1599 respectively. However, when I check Amazon.com, after conversion, the price is about SGD$850 and SGD$998 (after conversion). This is perverse! In the case of the Canon, it is more than double the price! I had heard of this price difference from friends and relatives in Oz, when they told me it was cheaper buying electronics in Oz compared to Singers. I am really gobsmacked by this, luckily I checked online before I battled the crowds at Suntec! So for those who are still considering, you'd better think twice! Jimmyzz Neutral Newbie March 14, 2009 Share March 14, 2009 Bought one canon hf10 through amazon with free US shipment. International shipping through borderlinx plus tax less than a thousand. Very trustworthy seller from amazon. Forget about buying in sing. Total rip off!
Guyver 1st Gear March 14, 2009 Share March 14, 2009 My friend went over to JB to buy his PC ..... the reason he gave me is that it is cheaper there. From the price he given to me ..... it seems really cheaper.
Route88 2nd Gear March 14, 2009 Share March 14, 2009 If after conversion,7% gst and courier charge still cheaper...which usually does, than u got nothing to loose. Most ppl still buy locally is bcos of warranty issue.

From the price he given to me ..... it seems really cheaper. that's really surprising. i always though people came here from up north to buy computer stuff. many camera stuff i want(ed)/need(ed) are cheaper overseas, but there's warranty issues. one of my camera is problematic, got it cheaper also not much use cos the warranty is not international. for lenses still ok cos got international warranty i did buy some other camera stuff from jusco cos it's much more convenient than going to the city or to AMK famous camera shop to buy them. probably cheaper by a bit also but convenience is a prime factor for me. of course, only go when there's no jam la. Carndablues Clutched March 14, 2009 Author Share March 14, 2009 Yeh, but one thousand bucks more expensive just for warranty??? You can buy two cameras and still have change left over! BTW, that poll option with Lee Kuan Yew was just a sneaking suspicion that I have that "big brother" is spying on us. 4 replies (before this one) yet 300+ views...hmmm... Carndablues Clutched March 14, 2009 Author Share March 14, 2009 Nope! Just buy the international brands, my Olympus camera broke down which I bought in Oz, but I got it replaced here FOC, under warranty. Admittedly, that was the only electronic that's ever broken down on me....so no, warranty is not a concern....certainly not for more than TWICE THE FREAKIN' PRICE!!!!!!! So far, i have found GPS, car audio stuff and electric shaver at cheaper prices online. I don't mind it if it's maybe even 10% more expensive than online, considering all the risks we take when we go online (revealing credit card info, personal details etc.) but when it's more than twice the price....it's totally unacceptable. And we pride ourselves on being a premier shopping destination??? Some of my expat colleagues have complained about the prices here before, but I thought they were just whinging white trash, but now it's me who has to eat humble pie! Most ppl still buy locally is bcos of warranty issue. I have gone into the online websites and compared their prices on products as against the same being sold in Singapore. After conversion of the rates and including freight charges and other costs, I agree that they are still cheaper. ↡ Advertisement
