how can people pick a golf over a wrx?

wrx > golf in terms of handling (awd), speed (turbo) and looks!

also you can put 1000 bhp into a subaru but a golf is maxed out at 300

Neutral Newbie

I think be it Golf or WRX, it boils down to personal taste and preference.

I find it really unfair and childish to label cars (e.g. WRX = Beng ; Golf = Girly etc) just because of some black sheep. In fact, who can tell me you have never been tailgated by vans, lorries, taxis or seen other makes driving recklessly and 'challenging' others on the roads? I drive a 07 Rex and I have my fair share of cars (different makes), vans, motorbikes etc performing stunts or tailgating me when I didn't even disturb them and ferrying my young daughter at the back.

The Rex in stock condition has relative high torque. Thus, when they accelerate and change lanes, it seems to others that they are reckless or speeding when they change lanes. As for WRXs are paying more in insurance premium because they have one of the highest accident rates on Singapore's roads. I beg to differ in this. Sure, the premium is high due to high accident rates. Coupled with the fact that it is considered a 'high performance' car (thus deeming it 'high risk' by insurers), the premium is definitely on the high side. However, if we are talking based on accident figures by make and model, I certainly do not believe that it is even in the top three. In fact, I have seen more taxi accidents and cars of certain popular makes (I shall not name the makes here in case I offend any members here) than Rexes on the road. This could be due to the popularity of the make. At the end of the day, as most forummers here have mentioned, it's the driver and not the make/model of the car. Thus, let's not stereotype.

Golf GTi is a fine car. I have owned and driven it while I was living overseas. Even the earlier versions and I have to say that not let its exterior fool anyone. It has a lot of head and leg space and fantastic driving position. Over the years, I have driven countless cars (owning and renting) and I have to say the GTis rules over most cars of similar class in terms of handling and performance. It is hard to describe, but you have to drive one to experience it.

However, in terms of straight-line performance stock to stock, there is really no way the GTI can win the stock Rex while in similar conditions. While I was studying overseas, I drag raced at England's Santa Pod drag strip with my friend's stock Rex several times and I lost by 2-3 seconds from the quartermile. My friend's GTI met with similar outcome. We exchanged cars and outcome was still the same.

When I cam back to Singapore, I bought the Rex due to its affordability. The relatively small but fast spooling TD04 turbo was simply superb on Singapore's usually congested roads. With its fast spool and nice torque range, I was able to accelerate and overtake safely with relatively little effort. Its stock 4-Pot brakes and stock suspension was average at most. With a little bit of 'investment' in upgraded Brembos and aftermarket suspension system, it totally upgraded its handling and braking to another awesome level. The same thing can be done for the GTI. But given the same amount of money, the potential from the Rex is definitely at a higher level than the GTI.

At the end of the day, it really boils down to one's personal preference. I love both cars. However, I give the Rex the edge mainly because I love its boxer engine sound and its 'value for money' power and handling potential. Again, that's my personal view and hope that everyone here will start to 'pin-point' the DRIVERS behind the car rather than the make and model.

Peace. [wave]

Both are nice cars to me.

When a consumer buys a car, he buys the one which represents an extension of himself, wallet willing that is.

Car companies know that and they will play it up to the mostest.

An advertisement of this nature will never take a Golf driver over to Subaru.

What it is trying to do is to make subaru owners feel good and to extend its renown image of producing high powered cars . in that process create noise and publicity in the market place.

So while both cars are nice to me, i will choose the Golf over the Subaru becos of brand image, better build quality and european styling over having more horses on tap.

Same reason why i'm driving what i'm driving and not a GTR.

Not becos i dont like GTR or that it is not good.

who got the bigger BHP wins .... kekeke

http://www.subaru.com.sg

Forget Golf this weekend.

Go for a 300bhp drive instead.

STI. The Hotter Hatch -> err is this statement targeted to Golf GTI ? kekeke

another dimension of 3-series vs C-class ... hahaha

I do miss the difference between 1.5L and 1.3l acceleration. So I believe others same feeling proportionally.
