wonder we have good memories during the next GE....or we are still concern about whether there is a lift stopping on the level where we stay.... [shakehead]

I am sure we do have good memories. WHen it comes to decison time during GE and u see the rival parties' credibilities there are voters who tend to go for the safe and proven team.

For a country that does not have oil or any other natural resources, a sovereign wealth fund like Temasek have a total assets of S$185billion (2008).

This is very credible achievement however you cut it. This monies is for us Singaporeans. Not the selected few. Just look at our neighbours, so rich in resources and all the monies going to only the selected few.

Loss of $1billion is really peanuts considering that they earned S$22billion last year. Dun miss the forest for the trees. Big picture please.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temasek_Holdings

In 2008, Temasek Holdings achieved a net profit of S$22.474 billion (about US$15 billion) on revenues of S$83.284 billion (about US$55 billion).

Tell that to the poor and needy people who are struggling to survive on a day to day basis.

Try going old Delhi. Their poor are living on make shift tents on the streets, young children begging on the streets. It becomes a vicious cycle. The 'struggling poor and needy people' in Singapore would appear to be living in Heaven when compared to them. Dun over exaggerate your stories about 'struggling to survive on a day to day basis'. Heard of anybody in Singapore who dies of hunger, starvation on a daily basis?

You go Delhi yourself.

Stay in context, I'm talking about Singapore. $1 billion can help many people.

If we don't have needy people, then we won't need NGO's, VWO's and other charity and welfare organizations.

I hope one day you will find yourself in a poor and needy situation. Then you will be in Heaven.

i remember that Ministry of Finance was the direct owner of state-owned enterprises and companies like Singtel, DBS, pidemco, ST etc etc etc.

These holdings were consolidated under a single holding company called Temasek Holdings, as it would be easier to manage these investments as a private holding company.

So temasek's money didn't come from CPF.

There are good professionals and bad professionals. Being professional just means they get paid.

...and when they lose lots of money...they will say "I've no regrets..."

That is a a HUGE country you are comparing to.. most of those living on the streets are from the rural areas trying their luck through begging since this is the best form of income since jobs are difficult to come by..

But then again.. they also have one of the top billionaires there are as well as many millionaires..

it's a different dermographics systems.. Over there a $1B... will disperse in thin air if they are to share it around with those that needs it... compared to the few thousands in singapore.. for the same $1B.

it's the law of relativity.. They are poor and need to seek or beg or scavenge for food to eat but hey they have no debt!.. Most Sg living in our pigeon home is poorer than these people because we have negative assets..loans, bills and debts to pay.... Can poor Sg beg? ...and loiter the streets to ask for help, food and surviving...?

My grandparents was poor once.. but they have land to work on to survive on the food, they have the sea to go fishing.. and chickens for the eggs... and they are debt free... all 10 children survive and have sufficient education...

You are probably right... we should not complain so much... how much we contribute to the reserve.. just pay GST wanna tok so much...

These are my 2 peanuts view on this matter...

Crux of the story is: They lost 1billion. But overall they earned $22billion last year. So what is the problem? Nit pick on their losses?

Sorry no Heaven. I'm going Hell. Got booking number to Hell already... [lipsrsealed]

Granted they have done a good job overall, agree with you.

But downplaying a $1 billion loss was my contention.

Sorry bro, no offense, just speaking my mind.

I was harsh on the Delhi and Heaven thing. Apologies.

Better say my peace with now because I might meet you in Hell... [grin]

Bro, if we sell all our pigeon holes, and whatever assets here and migrate to India, we will live like a king! The poor if they beg on the streets will have welfare officers scooping them up and send them to welfare homes. Never to beg again. Cant say the same for other countries. The poor in India especially have no chance of moving up the social ladder as the caste system is still deeply entrenched. In Singapore, we do not care your background, as long as you perform, you will move up the ranks. Mediocrity rocks.

>My grandparents was poor once.. but they have land to work on to survive on the food, they have the sea to go fishing.. and chickens for the eggs... >and they are debt free... all 10 children survive and have >sufficient education...

During our grandparents time, it's basically feeding hand to mouth. Living by the day. Now our kids expect overseas travels, luxury cars, condos and everything good. The big difference in lifestyle and expectations during our grandparents time and now is quite unbelievable. If my grandmother is alive and see our lifestyle, I swear her jaws will drop off the floor.

>You are probably right... we should not complain so much... how much we contribute to the reserve.. just pay GST wanna tok so much...

GST? 7% is not a lot with all due respect. Look at the VAT for the rich, resource full developed countries. Ours is quite minimal.

I only dare to say about India.. coz' I was there numerous times and managing the operations all over India......

We sell our staff and become king there.. true.. probably have 10 servants for the every nitty detail.. but not for long... real estate are more expensive in singapore and their interest rates is a killer...

on the other hand.. there's this thing about being paid if you are not working for up to 2 years in Europe.. and the maternity leave that takes ages to complete... yes their GST is heavy.. agreed... but so are the welfare.......

SG is still a balance place.. it's a challenge to live here.. but pls dun downplay the $1B losses.. they may have earn $20+B last year.. but what's the total lost actually...

So long they dun give "quirky" remarks that will bite them back, I am ok with that..

They have lost so much $$$, I am interested to know if fat bonuses are still being paid out.

Anyone knows?

When I last heard, they got paycut. They also cut budget on a lot of expenditures, including IT infrastructure spending, professional services.
