why concern? u know u r driving a CIVIC VTEC! [thumbsup] must let the VTEC kick in YOOOOOOOOO..others are sour grape lah... [shakehead]

There is no vtec to 'open' in R18A equipped civic.

http://asia.vtec.net/Engines/RiVTEC/index.html

So the new SOHC i-VTEC implementation is an entirely new implementation, quite unlike those already in use. Under normal driving conditions, the R18A runs on its normal set of cam-lobes which in a completely reversed role, Honda calls the 'hot-cams'. So VTEC-off on the R18A means it can be considered to be running high cams. When the right conditions are acheived for fuel economy, VTEC engages the 2nd set, the 'low' or 'economy' cams. Thus VTEC-on on the R18A means it is running low cams. More importantly is VTEC engages the low-cams only if the right conditions for fuel economy are acheived. If they are never acheived, like when we are driving aggressively for the whole trip for e.g., VTEC will never open on the R18A

never realize civic 1.8 can hit 16.2 to 17.0 km/l [dizzy], the best for me is 15km/l on NSH

You should try the older series civic like B or H series engine.. That is the truthly Vtec.. Especially with high cams. Not to forget about K20 also.

how to tell vtec kick in or not? [confused]

noticed once rev above 3500/rpm, a special sound from engine, does it mean vtec kick in?

The old VTEC is more significant,I-VTEC is too tame in my honest opinion.Toyota VVT-I and Daihatsu DVVT,BMW Double Vanos all [thumbsup] .Even the new Proton with CPS sound marvellous when it kick in [thumbsup] .Some sort of extra power.Hyundai VVT also not bad!

Spec are just Spec,Dun really trust it.But somehow it's near there. My Proton Saga booklet stated that auto can get 100km for just 6.3litres at speed of 90kmh.But always get 6.4-6.5.

The i-vtec is activated for fuel econ during low rpms. It's totally different from traditional vtec engines. FDs dun have it............ only the Type R has it

There's a sound module on Honda engine that's routed to the cabin - you'll hear the sound of VTECK kicked in yo! Very obvious wan.

It depends. FD's with the R18 engine has economy cam vtec, meaning that high(normal) lift is considered normal, and vtec is for fuel economy at low RPM. However for the 2L K20Z2 engine, things are a little different. It still has the high lift cams once VTEC opens at high RPMs, and also a mechanism to switch the engine to 12V at low RPM.
