Jman888 Moderator September 16, 2009 Share September 16, 2009 it use the 3G network to transmit data faster, if you off the 3G, the GPS will still work but slower. the gps on iPhone is good as street directory but not for driving with turn by turn voice guide. Kianbeng Clutched September 16, 2009 Share September 16, 2009 most importantly, do we have to pay for that software that uses the gps only without gprs? I understand the gps software that came with the phone, required the gprs to be on? or basically assisted gps.
Jman888 Moderator September 17, 2009 Share September 17, 2009 most importantly, do we have to pay for that software that uses the gps only without gprs? I understand the gps software that came with the phone, required the gprs to be on? or basically assisted gps. to my limited understanding, iPhone uses google map (foc) as the gps system but it come with a-gps that helps to locate you faster. there will be data charge for using it but the usage is very small (dun use it if you are overseas). I am not sure if it can use gps alone i.e. via satelite without incurring data charge. correct me if I am wrong. as using gps on google map, it is not as good as the dedicated gps dystem that gives you 3-D turn by turn direction, but it is good enough to lead me when I am around the area or plan the trip via the direction given. there are other gps app that can be dl but it cost $$, and I dun really want to answer a call and lost me way as I am talking..... There is actually a very good one which gives turn-by-turn, with fast re-routing, minus the voice navigation. Been using it (on my jailbreak 3G -you get what i mean ) and very user friendly and accurate. The maps are stored on the phone. iGo My Way.
inlinesix Hypersonic September 17, 2009 Share September 17, 2009 Looks like a lot of ppl find information in the wrong forum. Go to HWZ & look for Sygic Mobile Map. This software is $80 & it includes map for Singapore, Malaysia & Indonesia. I don't have it. So, no comment from me. Lastly, IMHO, ppl who buys Iphone without Data Plan is better off getting a normal phone.
Firstborn Neutral Newbie September 17, 2009 Share September 17, 2009 There is an application in Apple iTunes App Store called Sygic Mobile Maps (South East Asia). It comes loaded with maps on Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. It costs US$79.90. This is a GPS system giving directions turn by turn with voice and no hidden data cost as it uses GPS satellites. Search for it and read the reviews in iTunes for a better idea on this application.
