im a new user of the e71! had downloaded the garmin into my phone but it always take ages to find the satelite! issit normal?

This is the same case as my e71.

Without AGPS, it takes up to 10 minutes to have a lock on satellites. With AGPS, is a instant lock on.

it's quite quick to get lock from satellites usually - a few seconds only - are you sure takes 10minutes? Of course, being outside the building, without concrete roof to block line of sight from the satellites does help. I usually use the GPS when driving - its pretty quick to lock on in the car.

to install apps - usually use the cable to connect to PC. Can't really remember, but I think it does ask where you want to install - whether to phone or memory card.

Hi all E71 users, these are the following apps i have installed on my E71

Opera 5 mini beta- The best mobile browser (comes with tabbed browsing now!) one can have on the E71 next to the almost godly Safari mobile in iPhone/iTouch

GMobileXT- turn by turn navigational audio instructions. Ability to add POIs at will plus set proximity alerts. Very good imo.

Google mobile apps- This is actually a bundled app by Google that provides short cut to youtube/google maps/google search etc in a very clean interface.

Mail Exchange by Nokia- guys who have company mail servers running on Microsoft Exchange can try this one since it is free. Downside is that email is not supported in HTML. But that doesn't bother me.

Mobbler- this is a great app that allows you to listen to radio stations on Last.fm. you can thumbs up and thumbs down soundtracks which you like or dislike respectively so that gradually with time, most of the songs playing are to your preference. Good when you are sick of sg radio and your own songs.

Nokia Messenging This is an app that Nokia has brought out in response to the rather bland push email service that comes standard in our E71. Good point is that it offers out of the box support for many commercial email servers plus HTML support. I wasn't too pleased that it will be pay-only service comes Nov so I've since uninstalled it. Downside is that it keeps pushing mail and that drains battery power. However it is possible for you to set syncing to only occur say maybe once every few hours instead. But my personal choice aside, if you have got a robust and decent data mobile plan, i think this might just work for you.

Pixelpipe- this is not actually a mobile app but rather a service that makes use of Nokia's proprietary Nokia Share Online which is powered by Ovi. If you tried using facebook on your smartphone, you will realise that uploading of photos on the go is only possible through MMS or email which is quite a putoff frankly.

Basically you get Pixelpipe to act as a smart interchange between Nokia Share Online and Facebook. Here is how it works.

You take picture on your E71 and it gets stored in the Gallery -> you navigate to "Send> Post To Web> Pixelpipe"> Picture sent> Hey presto! your picture is now uploaded as a feed on Facebook as per normal.

Pixelpipe is similar to Shozu but the latter is a pay-only service so i bid my farewell to it sometime back.

And guys having problems with accessing your E71 menu i.e. hang whatever you call it, please go flash your firmware to 300.21.012 I did and now i am a happy man, no menu hang no frowns!

I verify this as being correct. In fact, sometimes weather conditions and your environment e.g. built up environment can sometimes exacerbate this. Remember that your transceiver is only that capable running off a smart phone. So if you are rushing for time, i suggest that you enable Assisted-GPS and use that to achieve faster satellite lock on.

HI all,

I installed google maps. Is there a way to use the GPS function to guide me on driving direction? I don't suppose it has a programmed voice to guide me like those GPS found in rented cars?

Same here, but 10mins is for a cold start. If its a hot start then its about 2mins. I've got a data plan though so I'm using AGPS.

Btw you may want to have a look at www.seven.com for your pushmail needs. I'm using it now and I do prefer it to a blackberry connect or nokia messenger solution.

I am afraid the Google Maps do not offer this functionality.

hmmm the original intention by Nokia is to make you download maps (by Nokia) on the go which incurs data charges. Google maps and Garmin Mobile XT is similar because you are able to carry in your E71 preloaded maps (containing POI i.e. points of interests).

Thus using Google maps and GMXT will save you the need to spend on data charges. However for all 3 methods, the handshake and comms between GPS and your phone is FoC unless you use Assisted-GPS.

But if you want turn by turn navigation, you will have to use GMXT instead of Google maps.

If you are interested in GMXT, PM me for more info.

Hey, i am interested in trying GMXT. And also other wonder functions of this phone!

PM you liao!

What do you want to do? There's stuff like Joikuspot to turn your E71 into a wifi hotspot, QReader to turn it into a mini e-book reader, Qik to do live internet video broadcasts, etc

You're very well-read. [thumbsup]

I'm using an E71 too lah [laugh] And I've had all three programs. Qik was a waste of time for me but still a fun novelty. QReader is a must for me, and joikuspot is for all the iphone ppl who don't have a data plan... They're all shocked at the app because they seem to think other OS's don't have good apps.
