Triproton Neutral Newbie February 3, 2010 Share February 3, 2010 Hi Guys..this morning when I woke up, I can't walk properly. The area near to the toe was extremely painful. The doctor said I am suffering from Gout. Gout occurs when someone eat too much meats, beans, beancurb etc. I wonder if this happen cos I just changed my dietary to more fat.... Not sure if I should continue....Anyone can share the experience and advises? I am afraid that gout is one of the risk of a high fat diet. As a general rule, high fat stuff contains lots of purine and because you will most likely eat the meat, protein. Even vegetable or plant fats will have some protein in them. A high fat diet will probably not be suitable for you. The following article might be useful for you. It seems that tofu will be good for gout! http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-some-food...-cause-gout.htm Gout is a kind of arthritis that occurs when sharp crystal shards of uric acid collect between the joints causing painful inflammation. Uric acid is usually a neutral, but unnecessary, chemical that the kidneys filter out of the blood through the urine. People with gout typically get it because either their body produces too much uric acid or because their body does not do a good job eliminating it. While uric acid exists naturally in the body, amounts of it in the body can be increased by certain foods that contain a lot of a particular chemical called purine. The kidneys normally break down purines into uric acid and then eliminate it from the body. People with gout or at risk of acquiring gout are encouraged to avoid foods high in purines. If you have gout or are at risk for gout, you should see a medical professional for advice. Still, some general points can be made about the foods that cause gout. In general, foods that are high in fat and/or cholesterol are also high in purines. As a result, a gout diet is one that is low-fat and low-cholesterol. Specifically, it's been suggested that less than 30% of one's daily Calories should come from fat. Proteins can also have large concentrations of purines. Generally, red meat and fish, like mackerel, sardines, oysters, mussels, and scallops, should be reduced, if not avoided altogether, as they can be foods that cause gout. Large amounts of high protein, fatty white meats, like poultry and pork, can aggravate gout as well. Sweetbreads (organ meats) like kidney, heart, or liver, are especially bad for those suffering from gout. Even foods related to meat, like chicken or beef broth, caviar, and bouillon might produce high levels of uric acid. Dairy products and vegetables can also be high in purines. High-fat dairy, like whole milk, ice cream, butter, and cheese have been said to possibly cause gout and are recommended to be replaced with low-fat or non-fat dairy, or soy alternatives. Spinach, mushrooms, cauliflower, peas, and asparagus have been shown to be rich in purines and therefore can be foods that cause gout. In an unrelated food category, lentil beans and yeast increase the chances for a gout flare up. For this reason, beer, because it's derived from yeast and grains, can increase the level of uric acid in the body. Some health professionals recommend that alcohol be avoided altogether. Ingesting purines is not the only way to build up an unusually high concentration of uric acid, called hyperuricemia. Poor kidney function, since the kidneys filter out uric acid, works in conjunction with foods that cause gout. Thus, drinking plenty of water and eating tofu, olive oil, and nuts, actually seems to counteract weakened kidneys to eliminate uric acid from the bloodstream. A diet rich in complex carbohydrates, in the form of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains like bread and pasta, may ease the symptoms of gout. A doctor might combine these diet restrictions with anti-inflammatory medication and an overall weight loss plan. ↡ Advertisement

Individuals with kidney disease should not attempt high fat/low carb diets because of the risk of kidney failure. Similarly, a diet high in fats may be harmful to individuals with advanced coronary artery disease or gout. These conditions may be worsened by the increased fat consumption. My personal experience: I have gout (DAMN BLOODY PAINFUL til cannot walk!) when I was eating high carb, low fat and moderate protein with lots of cycling almost everyday. Now no more with high fat, low carbs and moderate protein with body weight exercises everyday. So whatever you have been eating and doing has been giving you gout. Try something else. http://www.marksdailyapple.com/gout-sweet-drinks/ Edited February 4, 2010 by Chickenbackside

Topgun Neutral Newbie February 5, 2010 Share February 5, 2010 Wah, scary man. I went to Cold Storage, and for the 1st time, since CBS highlighted sodium nitrate's bad, I see all the ham, sausage, bacon almost everything is contaminated by this chemical. Shitz Even those without will have sodium ascorbate (if I remeber the spelling). Is this just as bad or worse? Is there anything healthy on the supermarket shelves??? Topgun Neutral Newbie February 5, 2010 Share February 5, 2010 I just found this, seems like sodium ascorbate is OK. "ASCORBIC ACID (Vitamin C), SODIUM ASCORBATE Antioxidant, nutrient, color stabilizer:Cereals, fruit drinks, cured meats. Ascorbic acid helps maintain the red color of cured meat and prevents the formation of nitrosamines, which promote cancer (see SODIUM NITRITE). Vitamin C is also used to pump up the vitamin content of foods like "fruit" drinks. It helps prevent loss of color and flavor by reacting with unwanted oxygen. It is used as a nutrient additive in drinks and breakfast cereals. Sodium ascorbate is a more soluble form of ascorbic acid. ERYTHORBIC ACID is very similar to ascorbic acid, but has no value as a vitamin. Large amounts of ascorbic acid may slightly reduce the severity of colds." http://cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm Guess we must do more reading and be really careful about what we put into our mouths. Topgun Neutral Newbie February 6, 2010 Share February 6, 2010 Just weighed myself this morning. Fully clothed n wearing my digital watch ............[drumroll] 66.9kg! Last weighed on Jan 24, I was 68.8kg! That's 1.9kg in 2 weeks! Hehe Feeling better, definitely looking better! Another 2 mnths will have a medical checkup and blood test done and compare with results did in last Sept.
Mazdaowner Moderator February 6, 2010 Share February 6, 2010 Good for you, keep up the diet. I went on the diet on Monday, and in 3 days I lost 4kgs, but mine is the extreme, because I cut off carbs totally, and hit ketosis on the second day, followed by headaches from the second day on. Had a carb meal to smooth the headache off on Thursday evening, and it was better, and restarted right after in the late evening, because the carb meal made me hungry very fast, 4hrs after the meal, I still tested positive for ketosis, last night the carb meal took it's toll on the ketosis. I'm not young as before, so I have to take things a bit slower, but will be getting there. Just a run down on my progress. Good work on your side. BTW, with a exercise regime added, you will be buffed very soon, specially if you cut off the carb further. Watch out for CNY, and don't loose your gains. I will only have one day of re-feed, on the eve, eating with my family, one meal, after that, it's back to the diet. My friends will come by, I will cook, but I'm staying off the "normal" foods. Good luck to all on this diet. Just weighed myself this morning. Fully clothed n wearing my digital watch ............[drumroll] 66.9kg! Last weighed on Jan 24, I was 68.8kg! That's 1.9kg in 2 weeks! I still have 2 cuppas of kopi-o siu dai (since I started this. Used to be 3 or 4 or even 5 kopi per day addiction before). And I sure there's still some carbs sneaking in during meals. I'm not young either. So I'm happy with the 'gradual' loss. Yup, I've slacked off the exercise a little though. I went for a 45 min easy run this morning. And every evening/nite I'm doing some pushups and sit-ups/crunches. Hope to build this up to 30 reps of 3 sets. Good luck to you too! Mazdaowner Moderator February 6, 2010 Share February 6, 2010 I don't gym as hard as I used to now, also mainly I don't have the energy right now, since I'm getting used to going zero carbs for more then 72hrs. Then again, that's what I really want, get out of the gym and do what I want to do, I used to look like a freak, and I mean it, a freak, size and all, now I want to just cut off the mass and go a bit smaller in size. For coffee wise, think you can cut the milk off and go black coffee, but a word of caution, kopitiam coffee isn't exactly healthy stuff either, seeing the crap they put on the beans when roasting. I roast my own beans and grind them when I want to make coffee, so they're fresh as fresh can be and no crap on them, plus the caffeine is assured to be good if not the best quality. Thanks.
