Can changing of better quality brake pads help in reducing the dust particles? Thus making your clean rims last longer.

Change to normal "drum brakes" if you want absolutely minimal dust on rims.

The good brakes are disc brakes - sure kena brake dust

The even better brakes are ventilated disc brakes - usually on front wheels and even more brake dust

U want clean rims with disc brakes? 2 ways:

1) Wash often

2) Change to rims like the honda hybrid

There are various type of wheel cleaner this days..ssome is quite mild and some are quite harsh..Just be careful especially dealing with expensive rims..

For me..i use wheel cleaner or APC to deal with those stubborn brake dust on my berlingo..The normal wash will be mama lemon detergent..

again..there are various type of APCs..some are stronger till it bites our skin..in long usage..it isn't good for us..The APC ultimate orange are citrus washes basically..it does not bite our skin or harmful..

Here what I'd do if I were you:

First of all, I'll take the wheel off, clean them down inside out really well with a strong cleaner (DG Ultimate Orange neat or diluted Meg's Wheel Brightener), take all the tar off (use a solvent type product, I'd use Dupont Prepsol or the like), clay them then seal them with a few layers of Enviroshield before putting them back on.

After doing this, cleaning the wheels would be a whole lot easier. I'd start with just spraying them with a strong gush of water (a Pressure Washer would really helps), if it's dirtier I'd use leftovers from car wash shampoo with a wash mitt or mf cloth, if that doesn't do the trick then I'd go with diluted Ultimate Orange (start with 15:1 and go up the scale if it's not strong enough). If the wheels are properly sealed, I don't think you'd need anything stronger than Ultimate Orange at 5:1 dilution. Just remember to top up with the Enviroshield or any spray type sealant/wax after a few washes or after using a strong cleaner or when it doesn't bead anymore.

I know it sound tedious, but a well kept (sealed) wheels are very much easier to clean cuz the brake dust wouldn't cling much on them. So to clean them, you'd only need 2 products, either the normal car shampoo if it's not-so-dirty and an APC like the Duragloss Ultimate Orange or the like for dirtier times.

Regards.

YOU need to read carefully Artz.

Ostensibly, the drum brake reply was with reference to Salmon's question. Purposely quoted his question in my reply somemore ... haiz ... [dizzy]

I guess i wouldn't go through such tedious process...but i guess your way is the only way to have it thoroughly cleaned, by removing the rims off.

but thanks for the detail.

Enviroshield that u mentioned, Where can i get this product. Is some rim coating product?

That is what on my mind too.

but i guess i need to research more on what brakepad lesser brake dust for now.

And ya, i think there should be some rim coat available and i think + a rim/tar cleaner should do the trick with regular washing maybe once a week.

If ya don't care about how dirty the barrel is, just seal the face of the wheel.

I would rec either OptiSeal or FK1000P.

Krismas: Seen Tarminator or Tardis around locally? I am in need of some tar remover man.
