How is this slamming other faith?

Rather it is making fun of an attitude that slams other faith and intolerance - who would really think that being a prostitute is ok and a protestant isn't?

to understand the significance of being a protestant in this joke, you will need to understand the turmoil in northern ireland. which you obviously dont. this is not a religious joke but one that pokes fun at the past (and mebbe current) issues ireland is facing.

good to pick up a book once in a while you know. then you wont be shooting your stupid mouth off!

Er I am fully aware of the conflict between the Catholic and Protestant in Ireland - I grew up with it on the news every night, the IRA and their militant wing the Sein Fein, Orangemen, Bloody Sunday, the marches and more.

To me, the joke is making fun of the conflict, it is making fun of intolerance. It is not saying that being a Potestant is worse than a Prostitute, it is making fun of the father for thinking that a Prostitute is worse than a Prostetant, but then, it is a nuance that you may not understand*.

Pick up a book and learn the meaning of nuance once in a while yourself.

*Not to say my interprtetation is correct, but what I find funny is the irrationality of the father's attiutude...others may put a different spin on it.

BTW - I posted a reply based on what I know of the situation, and my interpretation of the joke, I did not engage in any personal name calling or anything of the like. If you have a different interpretation and want to engage me in why I am wrong, then that is fine. But the name calling and nasty language adds nothing to that, and just makes you look cheap and insecure. Furthermore, it does not further anyone's understanding if the discussion degenerates into low IQ name calling.

I share your view on this. This joke has been around for a long time and most of my friends have similar views on this.

Any father will be very proud to have such a capable daughter. [laugh]

Now I'm trying to remember the joke about the three mothers discussing their sons, one's a doctor, one's a lawyer and one's a gay giggolo...

The mums of the doc and lawyer make fun of the gay giggolo mum mum...but she gets the last laugh as the doctor and lawyer visit her son...

can anyone remember?

dont worry. i believe most protestian will understand this as a joke. but there will be a minority that will take a lot of offense. but in singapore, this type of jokes are generally not acceptable in the main stream media. (ppl will tend to take a moral high ground even if they do cracks this sort of insensitive jokes.

Well when you get down to the basic level, Jew Christian and Muslem all pray to same god - so why so many problems?

Is herd instinct and people want to band together into "us" and "them"

Is same throughout history - African tribes fought each other, Maori tribe had war, Fench and English fought, English and Scots...even China and Taiwan....

its not the same. you have mixed fighting over religion and fighting over power.

when the actors of the world stage are national powers, and religion is used as the excuse, its always about power.

when common man fight with each other over religion, its more an ego thing. (my religion is right and your's is wrong thinking)

I know a somewhat funnier version. From memory (my own wording - I embellished a little to make it (IMO) funnier):

Three mothers were discussing their sons.

The first mother proudly said, "My son's the most successful doctor in all of New York. Everyday he gets patients that thank him for saving their lives. We're trying to find the right girl for him, but he keeps saying he's too busy saving lives."

The second mother declared even more proudly, "My son's the most successful lawyer in all of New York, he was tops in Harvard. He has an unbeaten record and has a mansion and a yacht. We're also trying to find the right girl for him, but he keeps turning us down - only the best will do for our little genius, haha!"

The last mother looked at both of them and said in a soft voice, "Well, I have to admit that both your sons have made good. My son is not nearly so accomplished. He's just a simple stage actor who's often unemployed. He's also gay. But he's very happy, since he's dating two wonderful men. One's the most successful doctor in New York, the other's the most successful lawyer!" [sly]

this one is not funny. the real one go like that.

Three mothers were discussing their sons.

The first mother proudly said, "My son's the most successful doctor in all of New York. He is so rich that he had recently gave 5 Mansion to his friend.''

The second mother declared even more proudly, "My son's the most successful lawyer in all of New York, he was tops in Harvard. he is so rich that he had recently gave 10 lambo to his friend''

The last mother looked at both of them and said in a sadvoice, "Well, I have to admit that both your sons have made good. My son is a disgrace. He is a Gay. but recently he had recieved 5 mansion and 10 lambo from his gays partner.''

you dont seem to understand sarcasm...

sorry to burst your bubble. sarcasm does not show up in print. (sarcasm)

and since their differances are irreconcilable, might as well be.
