I know a somewhat funnier version. From memory (my own wording - I embellished a little to make it (IMO) funnier):

Three mothers were discussing their sons.

The first mother proudly said, "My son's the most successful doctor in all of New York. Everyday he gets patients that thank him for saving their lives. We're trying to find the right girl for him, but he keeps saying he's too busy saving lives."

The second mother declared even more proudly, "My son's the most successful lawyer in all of New York, he was tops in Harvard. He has an unbeaten record and has a mansion and a yacht. We're also trying to find the right girl for him, but he keeps turning us down - only the best will do for our little genius, haha!"

The last mother looked at both of them and said in a soft voice, "Well, I have to admit that both your sons have made good. My son is not nearly so accomplished. He's just a simple stage actor who's often unemployed. He's also gay. But he's very happy, since he's dating two wonderful men. One's the most successful doctor in New York, the other's the most successful lawyer!" [sly]

Yep...dat's the one...but seem to recall another line about how the actor son was taking mum out on the yacht or sumtink....but maybe I am misremembering.....

The joke is actually also a very good life lesson in humility....

sorry to burst your bubble. sarcasm does not show up in print. (sarcasm)

and since their differances are irreconcilable, might as well be.

if you say so...

i agree with your 2nd point though

How is this slamming other faith?

Rather it is making fun of an attitude that slams other faith and intolerance - who would really think that being a prostitute is ok and a protestant isn't?

i just find the joke utterly distasteful...

not towards the protestants but rather the catholics, irish or otherwise

and i am not even a catholic <_<

talking about jokes as a metaphor for life lessons in humility..

the prostitute joke was based on the zeitgeist of irish catholic/protestant fighting.

although the differences have been around since reformation, it seems only relevant to the time and space dimensions of people familiar with the history to understand the joke and the life lesson.

some others in singapore may not appreciate the joke and take offense.

even if the subject was a gay son getting the devotion from the lawyer and doctor, knowing how anti-gay singaporeans are, this joke may cause offense too.

just this joke alone and we can see people coming out and nearly coming to a fight.

getting into a fight over offending someone's sensibility is one of the silliest things in to world. and yet many people die over it.. hmmm

some lessons are just lost on a majority of people.. no matter how good a lesson it is..

Agreed...the gay joke told today would probably be considered offensive in the US - because it implies there is something "wrong" with being gay. It still works fine for Singapore though, where being gay is considered some big offense and tragedy.

For the Prostitute joke, the use of Catholic and Protestant is actually pretty much irrelevant - as the joke is about greed and bigotry in general, and how the father was "bought". The use of Catholic and Protestant just sets the tone and situation without the need to explain. Anybody familiar with the context of the times knows that Protestant and Catholic were mortal enemy.. The joke would work equally well with Australian and New Zealanders if the word for Prostitute were Aussino.

Ok...so try this...

THE NEW AUSTRALIAN

The Kiwi daughter had not been home for over 5 years. Upon her return, her father cursed her heavily saying, "Where have you been all this time, child? Why did you not write to us, not even a line? Why didn't you call? Can you not understand what you put your old mother through?"

The girl, crying, replied, "Sniff....Dad....I became an aussino (prostitute) "You what? Out of here you shameless harlot! Sinner! You're a disgrace to this Kiwi family!"

"OK, Dad, as you wish, but I just came back to give Mum this luxurious fur coat, title deed to a ten bedroom mansion plus a $5 million savings certificate. For my little brother, this gold Rolex. And for you, Daddy, the sparkling new Flacon XR8 parked outside plus season tickets at Eden park and an invitation for you all to spend New Year's Eve on board my new yacht in the Riviera ."

"Now what was it you said you had become?" asks Dad.

Girl, crying again, "Sniff, sniff.. an Aussino (prostitute), Daddy! ... Sniff ...sniff."

"Oh! Be Jesus! You scared me half to death, Girl! I thought you said an

Australian. Come here and give your old Dad a hug!"

Just a clue - if you can change the joke like this, and it still works, then it is targeting an attitude, and not a culture, as such it is not offensive.

Ok now people will complain that you insult Australians and Kiwis [laugh][laugh][laugh]

Well yeah - that is kinda the point, but anyway, Kiwis are tuff enough to handle whatever is tossed at them and lauff  and Australians don't matter. [;)][:p]

How about this:

> Little Johnny came into the kitchen whise his mothis was

> making dinner. His birthday was coming up and He thought

> this was a good time to tell his mothis what He wanted. "Mom,

> I want a bike for my birthday."

>

> Now, Little Johnny was a bit of a troublemaker. He had

> gotten into trouble at school and at home. Johnny's

> mothis asked his if He thought He deserved to get

> a bike for his birthday. Little Johnny, of course, thought

> He did.

>

> Johnny's mothis, being a Christian woman, wanted him to

> reflect on his behavior over the last year, and write a

> letter to God and tell him why He deserved a bike for his

> birthday. Little Johnny stomped up the steps to his room and

> sat down to write God a letter.

>

> LETTER 1:

>

> Dear God:

>

> I have been a very good boy this year and I would like

> a bike for my birthday. I want a red one.

>

> Your friend,

> Johnny

>

>

> Johnny knew this wasn't true. He had not been a very

> good boy this year, so He tore up the letter and started

> over.

>

> LETTER 2:

>

> Dear God:

>

> This is your friend Johnny. I have been a pretty good boy

> this year, and I would like a red bike for my birthday.

>

> Thank you,

> Johnny

>

>

> Johnny knew this wasn't true eithis. He tore up the

> letter and started again.

>

> LETTER 3:

>

> Dear God:

>

> I know I haven't been a good boy this year. I am very

> sorry. I will be a good boy if you just send me a red bike

> for my birthday.

>

> Thank you,

> Johnny

>

> Johnny knew, even if it was true, this letter was not going

> to get his a bike. By now, He was very upset. He went

> downstairs and told his mothis He wanted to go to church.

> Johnny's mum thought her plan had worked because Johnny

> looked very sad.

>

> "Just be home in time for dinner," his mother

> said.

>

> Johnny walked down the street to the church and up to the

> altar. He looked around to see if anyone was thise. He

> picked up a statue of the Virgin Mary, slipped it under his

> jacket and ran out of the church, down the street, into his

> house, and up to his room. He shut the door and sat down

> and wrote his letter to God.

>

>

> LETTER 4:

>

> I GOT YOUR MAMA.

>

> IF YOU WANT TO SEE HER AGAIN, SEND THE BIKE!!!!!

>

> Signed,

> YOU KNOW WHO [sly]

something I find in your cultural perspective rather different.

although you might consider the gay joke offensive in the US as it implies there is something "wrong" with being gay, I on the other hand feel the focus of the joke was about how the mothers boasting about their sons have now "lost face" by assuming their sons were heterosexuals.

being asian, I feel that the joke slighted the mothers but not the sons.. do I make any sense to you?

I somehow do not think that the joke has slighted the gay sons at all..

This 2 different perspectives on the same jokes may be the reason why some cultures just cannot come to a common understanding, because the offense of sensibility is impossible for the other to comprehend.

Makes sense lor...BTW, I don't know that the joke is offensive in the US - I am just guessing.

But yeah - I'm with you, I think the joke is funny because the mothers "lost face" because boasting about son's and how all high and mighty they were when they were actually gay. But the joke only works if you feel there is social stigma associated with being gay.

I think the prostitute joke is a little clearer (and less "offensive") as what father in his right mind would rather have a prostitute for a daughter than a protestant? Also - it is making fun of him for being "bought" by her gifts.

ahhhh... but the stigma of being gay applies to the mothers in this case. I as the listener of the joke do not think it is a social stigma.

if this joke were to be told by a gay or told to a gay, he might even feel smug..

unless i'm getting this totally wrong... do I make sense?
