$150,800 for a Golf GTi (210bhp)

$162,800 for the R (256bhp)

Extra 12k should be more than just horsepower gain. Nice rear light though, gives an Audi TT feel.

tested the car this afternoon. dont feel like a 5.7 sec century sprint as stated in the spec thou the SE ask me to do a launch in sports mode and follow by a e-brake for the first 200m or so dash. stock brake feel spongy. next was to test the car in afew corners. the car handle pretty well thou.

will i pay $160+K for the Golf R? let me test the S3 before deciding.....:-)

Went down to the showroom on saturday and was told by VW's 'quite unfriendly' staff that the Golf R isn't available for test drive. Then why on earth did they spend bucketloads to advertise and hold a showroom launch when the car isn't available? It's a waste of my time and their money. When I asked to test the GTI instead, they tried to dissuade me and said that it won't be as good as the Golf R and 'I won't like the feel'. @#$%^&%$#

They think I don't have money to buy a GTI or the R?

It is crazy to pay $160k for a golf when golfs are bread and butter cars in Europe.

Well paying say $80k for an entry level Corolla 1.6 is also ridiculous by the standards of almost every other country in the world. We just have to live with the COE prices here.

Golf no longer bread & butter anymore la. The cheapest 1.4 (no TSI) cost 16k quid. Cheapest GTI cost 24k quid. Cheapest R cost 30k quid.

was impressed by the haldex awd. into the corners, the car had a sharp turn in transitioning into mid corner understeer UNTIL it got wind of what was going on and transferred torque to the rear. It was very noticeable and the car rotated nicely thereafter.

acceleration was alright. expected the launch to be more aggressive. braking was good but really, nothing to really shout about.

nice experience nonetheless... it should have been a 1/4 mile instead of just 200m...
