The_Bear Turbocharged June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 What to do? Go in there to serve a week or two. Have to be positive. However, my days of service are over. Looking back, the bulls1t all of us took made us laugh in a recent outing. be it the NS or ICT times...its the bullshlt times and absurd situations that we remember vividly. Hardly remember the days of doing nothing. ↡ Advertisement
Fireball0088 5th Gear June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 During my third ICT, one reservist kena charge and sent for one week in DB. His crime : During lunch in the cookhouse on the last day of ICT, Mr A promptly took out his camera phone from his pocket to pick up the call. Just so happen the camp RSM and all the crabs saw it. Immediate confiscate + kena charge. The encik for our ICT went to plead for the reservist guy, also no use. End up, phone confiscate, sim card return and he spent a week polishing the bar. The sim card is important for him as he is a sales person. Never waive leh. actually, those RSM and crabs think that pple outside like them inside... outside we work our butt off. seriously, just give warning will do lah.... anyway, the Mr A also one kind... why he bring the phone in.... haiz... I think the thing is the misconception that NSman going for ICT is different from a regular NSF or regular in the SAF. Someone here already thinks NSman don't need to do guard duty already.I think Mr A might have that in his mind. Camphone? Nevermind lah! Of course in a military installation, security is important. Where got nevermind one. All go into the camp. All soldier. Wear that uniform must behave soldierly even keeping in mind the need for security. Then the RSM like you say think that NSman will automatically think like soldier. Can warn him to remind Mr A. I know NSman is mature soldier but also need to remind him. Respective company chiefs/CSMs must do their best to remind their men. I know my own OC don't like men getting charged. It means one less man and he needs all the men he can get. S7834g Clutched June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 I'm adding my 2cents on the sales guys kanna DB for his camera phone. I don't think it's fair just because he violated a minor offence and needed to serve time in the Army DB. Not all of us can afford 2-3 weeks to attend ICT without suffering a loss in income, especially sales guys. I have a couple of mates that had to return to office to settle their sales issues after booking out for the night and stayed at work till 2-3am and return to camp next day at 6-7am. If these sales guys refuse to answer their calls, they might lose out even more money for the coming months. We should all know how tight our commitments are on our monthly paycheck. I'm not saying that guy is right in using the phone in an inappropiate manner at the wrong place, in fact, i'll call him dumb ( Rule no 1 SAF: Can Do anything but don't get caught). But having said that, the SAF should realize that every NS men that return to camp have to make sacrifices to a certain extent and deal with issues that arises on a case by case basis. We don't know everything about the case, the guy might have multiple discipline issues before or have had clashes with the RSM. Whatever the issue is, i think we should always take pride being an citizen army and do what we can, within reasonable limits of course, for the country. And as far as i goes, there's nothing the SAF has asked for that i felt is unreasonable....except to moan at the always "efficient" way things work. Sorry for the heavy text wall on a Friday.... Pyramid_sg Clutched June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 The only reason I enjoy my ICT is meeting up with my reservist friends. Before moving outfield, we would plan what food to bring from day one to the last day of outfield. Most of the time, out combat rations are not touched. We only open a few packs just to get the pocari. The last time, we had a BBQ having Black Angus beef with Worchestor sauce. We cooked it medium rare over the gas stove but found out that cooking it over the charcoal tasted better. We downed it with ice cold coke and had Longans and Lychee for desert. Man we were like savages, using out hands to eat that beef. That was a real morale booster. Word got round to our reservist OC and 2I/C. Then they ditched their combat rations and joined us...... Soon after our reservist CO came too......... with his PSO's In one ICT, the regular LTC in charge of our unit came and caught us doing out cookout. That time, I was doing a 2I/C appointment. Swiftly, I got one of the guys to whip out a ice cold coke and offered it to him. Then explained that the men needed some time to reorientate back to being a soldier and promised him we would behave the next night. Nothing happened after that....... we are still on good terms with the LTC. One thing I remember to do to keep the guys morale up is, always bring ICE. Put it in a good styrofoam box that will last you for a few days. Outfield when its hot, its always a good reprieve when you down any drink with ice. Sg2303 2nd Gear June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 Army slang for a combat engineer. Comes from the British. The Germans call the combat engineer pioneer. A term also used in the SAF for combat engineer. US Army more haolian. Only elite combat engineer then can call sapper. Ranger got ranger tab. Elite combat engineer from US Army got sapper tab. Wow, I didn't know this. I'm a sapper too!
Genie47 1st Gear June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 Then explained that the men needed some time to reorientate back to being a soldier and promised him we would behave the next night. Nothing happened after that....... we are still on good terms with the LTC. That's the idea. What these RSMs need to know is that if you focus so much on the NSman being the soldier as soon as he puts on the uniform, I guarantee you he will siam the next ICT. Of course if you make it so much like holiday camp, then no need to do training and be soldiers. Everything need some kind of balance. You focus so much on the mission, pretty soon you will be the last man standing, if you are lucky. If you care about welfare so much, might as well pack up and go home. Even in the SAF, this is important. It is the men who do complete the mission. The officers and NCOs? They are there to give us the tools and even morale to finish the mission. That is what leadership is for.
Genie47 1st Gear June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 The history and tradition of the sapper is very long. I think the name came about since days of old as in BC time. Special soldiers will be called to digg tunnels and trenches towards the enemy fortification. To sap the enemy's strength. So the slang sapper came about. Ironically the French call the combat engineers officially as sappeur. I think in days of old, the sapper not only dug trenches and tunnels. They actually built the catapult devices for artillery. No sane king is going to drag these machines to some place for a siege. They just get a bunch of sappers, chop trees, tie rope and viola! You got a trebuchet. Ftco 2nd Gear June 11, 2010 Share June 11, 2010 (edited) Notification ICT: Sianz Week before ICT: Holiday mood Starting of ICT: sianz...then meet frens and HEY! During ICT: mixing of TCSS and sianz during training Out-Pro of ICT: SUPER SIANZ After ICT: Sianz, so many backlogs in office...missed ICT Plus: ICT is the only place that I feel like a true blue Singapore, talk like a Singaporean and behave/joke like a Singaporean....cos ICT is the only place that I'm surrounded by 100% true-blue Singaporeans, no PRs or FTs... Agree 101%. Been 5 yrs since MR and I really miss ICT. At least it is a chance to get away from the daily routine whether employer like it or not. And good to hear from army frens how they are surviving our society. Edited June 11, 2010 by Ftco ↡ Advertisement
