Rant - Car backside got hit, culprit ran away

To TS, I personally also rammed my own car backside recently. Damage real bad and was quoted more than 1k in Sin Ming workshops...

Then I was recommended to go to Alexandra Village workshops. Was quoted less than $400 from a few of the workshops. Apparently, the workshops there are more competitive as less "big-name" workshops and usually small workshops fighting for business. Just drive the car to some honest-looking workshops and ask for a few quotes before deciding.

in the end, i paid $350 and it took only 1day at the workshop to fix it.

Hope this gives you "hope".... cheers

Nice to know that! Gives me confidence that my dad's car can be repaired below 1k given that the damage is not that extreme! Yes, I'll drive around to get different quotes. I personally live in AMK so I'll probably try out Industrial Park 2 first. Thanks! Cheers

In such a situation (where someone bangs your backside and you can't stop due to a traffic situation or any other potentially hazardous situation) what should you do like reporting to insurance company and stuff?

Gurus' here, can throw some more light for newbies (including me!)

Twincharged

Hi Sir, the COE when bought is all time low of $2 so there isn't much point in scraping the car. The damage is still not as bad as to scrap the car. I will try to snap some photos of it tonight if I can get my hands on the car. Thanks Sir for your advice. It is useful nonetheless [flowerface] Cheers.

I thought ur previous post said COE left 1 year only? The $2 COE is nov 2008. So should have 8 more years right?

No Sir, I believe there was another COE all-time-low back 9 years ago? As the car is due to scrap in 2011, I believe that the previous all-time-low is in 2002? I'm not too sure about that but that was what my dad told me. Cheers

It's unfortunate that car got hit and culprit ran away, but I sincerely hope that people here would not do sth as amoral as quoting someone's car no. and claim against it for hit and run just to get some scapegoat to pick up the tab for the repairs. I had a personal encounter, it was very unfortunate and disturbing. In 2008 I received a lawyer's letter saying that someone wants to claim my ins for hitting his car and running away. Though I used that expressway that day and time, I did not bang anyone! And there was a heavy jam that day due to chain collision on the first lane, so for most of the journey, my car was 'crawling' at turtle speed, if anyone thought that I banged into his car, he should put on hazard lights and alight right? But nobody did.

Anyway the next day I dashed to my motor ins company to see the report, coz not much details were given in the lawyer's letter. Guess what? That very low class ins company representative asked me, whether I was behind that car that day of the claimed accident. Imagine this, how could i remember? If I say NO, I'm definitely lying. But the way she asked me, was in a way trying to get me to admit that I did hit and run, which I didn't!

Well for the car claiming my insurance, it was a MPV, it not only changed bumper, it also changed the door panel at the back, opening to the boot, due to 'scratches'. Plus renting car for a few days, lawyers' fees, everything added up to more than 5k. The thing is, my little car is totally fine, how can it cause damage to the bumper and most ridiculously the rear door panel of a MPV? Unless my car can fly, and it must have flew, coz the front could hit a spot much higher than its height, and I was accused of speeding off after I hit that car, in a heavy jam. I got LTA to give me an email verifying that I did not apply to remove the car plate seal of my OPC for any purpose, as proof that my car was never damaged.

The ins com rep advised me to call the claimant, 'in case it is a case of mistaken identity'. So i did, guess what that idiot said when I asked him why didn't he alight from the car since he thought I banged his car? He said 'I didn't want to alight from my car because there was a heavy jam, I don't want to get scolded by other people for causing a heavier jam'. IMO, it is a scam, he must have benefited from that 'journey to the workshop'.

This case is still pending for court, and I've changed an insurer. My NCD was affected and my premium more than doubled. That low class insurer quoted me more than 3 times my original premium for renewal in 2009. I wonder why I need to even pay premium to them, because they did not try to do anything to help, except for suggesting that I was behind that car, and telling me to call that claimant. That rep did not bother to reply my email when I emailed her the pics of my car, evidences that show my car was not and could not be involved in that accident. She was never contactable on her office phone, never reply my voice messages. It was only when a chinese lady took charge of my case that I could finally contact someone regarding it (it was a surprise). So one lesson learnt, ins com that charge v little might provide little or no service at all and I definitely would not insure with that ins com again even if it gives me lowest quote in future.

Thanks for the comforting words, I appreciate it but the situation got the best of me. It's quite an old car as the COE will be up by next year and the idea of repairing the car ourselves is probably as close to impossible as possible as we do not have any knowledge on hardware engineering especially a car. The damage is pretty bad and I do think that professional help is more ideal. Yes, I'm aware that I do need to leave the car behind for 2 days at least for the fixing and I'm still sorting it out with my dad. I do hope that he is able to leave the car at the workshop for the few days at least. I'm able to fork out 1k for the repairs and I hope that its enough [:(] That's almost a month's pay but what can I say? [bigcry] Thanks for the advice buddy, you're of great help. I can only hope for the best given the situation now. Have a great night! [wave]

from sound of it, cannot be more than $1K ... maybe $500 only

knocking bumper + rear body is cheap work, respray is another few hundreds

Neutral Newbie

Sorry to hear about your mishap, but mine is worse. Boot can't even open and close with ease. And what's worse, it's my dad's car that I borrowed out to send my girlfriend home [:(] Now my dad is super upset and may not even lend me his car anymore [bigcry] What can I say when its not my fault but all my fault in his eyes? [thumbsdown] So I intend to get it repaired with my own hard earned money and hope for his forgiveness. Hence, I need some inputs from fellow MCFers for which workshop to visit. Thanks again. Have a great night everyone [:(]
