Got myself a iMac, now I am pondering to purchase a Office Suite or iWorks. Which one should I buy?

I'm not sure how the current Office for Mac 2008 fares. I used to have the earlier Office for Mac 2004 but ditched it as it was a resource hog and some complex word/excel docs were still not formatted properly. So I ended up using MS Office within my VMWare-ed Windows for those critical docs I need to send to people using windows.

 

Life is much faster and simpler these days with Apple Mail (vs Entourage), Numbers (vs Excel) and Keynote (100000 times more beautiful than Powerpoint). I don't really use Pages though.

 

If you're not urgent, you might wanna wait just a while more as iLife '11 should be releasing soon (iWorks normally released together with it). Also Office for Mac 2011 is currently in beta and is scheduled for release in end October.

 

Meanwhile can always install and use your 100% compatible MS Office within your VMWare/Parallels windows.

 

BTW congrats on your purchase. My i7 iMac should be here next week

Well, the only iWork app I use is Keynote (which is awesome for making cool presentations). But I use nearly all the Office apps - Word, Excel and Powerpoint (when I'm feeling lazy and not interested in making kickass presentations). I haven't tried the word processing/spreadsheet apps in iWork, so cannot comment.

 

So if you have to choose, I'd say go for Office - it's the safe option and it should be compatible with all your files. But if you can afford it, get both - just the quality of Keynote presentations alone makes it worthwhile, IMHO.

Try downloading the FREE software Open Office.

It's compatible to Mac and you are able to view MS Office documents.

 

I'm using it for my Mac Pro.

Yup, warranty over. The screen when funny, suspect that the video card is giving the problem but i cannot confirm. Went to Toa Payoh Authorized service center and the price they quoted me is super high ... they said that i cannot just change the video card, need to change the entire motherboard, dun noe how true

 

so now looking for any shop that can service my iMac

my son's sch installed sophos antivirus on macs as std. sophos is industry strength AV (available for win too). i tried asking sophos but apparently they dun do biz for home use. i still hv the evaluation copy installed and although they stopped the updates, it is still active. it happened on a couple of occasions when it scans emails it will still detect win malware or virus but these usu dun affect macs.

ClamXav. Free software, most useful to detect *Windows* viruses/worms on my thumb drive when I put it into my iBook.

 

Not true that OS X is entirely malware-free, but I think it's still safe to run it without an antivirus for now.
