Tyre change takes less than an hour. Do it first for your own safety, and everyone else's too. Running around with bald tyres in wet weather is a bit like playing russian roulette every time you take a turn.

erm... what does changing tyre got to do with inspection??? if u need to change tyre, means u got to change, whether LTA change or not, it doesnt really matter. Its for the safety for yourself as well as other safety for other road users

anyway, changing tyre will not affect your alignment that much.

Bro tyres in my opinion is the most important element of your car. Only all 4 are in contact w the ground, for your safety, please tyre change first.

What has changing of tyres got to do with inspection. You change tyres because you need to, not because of inspection.

 

I don't think they really check for tyre thread depth during inspection though. Cause I went for inspection last yr with almost botak tyres and still pass.

 

Just change them to a 2nd hand set yesterday only its not working well in the wet.

 

Of course, you have to judge yourself when you should change your tyres, esp. it rains alot these days.

 

Although bald tyres have no problem in dry weather (in fact even better grip because they behave like slicks). during wet weather you jialat because you tend to aquaplane.

Btw, I would like to mention one common misconception about tyres.

 

Depth of threads does not solely determine the amount of grip you have. It only matters when there is alot of standing water and the speed you cut thru the water.

 

What really matters is the tyre compound and amt of contact surface.

In fact, wet traction is the most critical element for street driving. A tire should never lose traction (when tire not botak) in dry condition under normal driving (at normal speed, & ambient temperature above 7deg). Barred doing some manuvure to avoid potholes or object on roads etc.

 

Dry traction only really critical if you bring your car to track.

Thats not entirely correct. Even when tyre is botak, it should not lose traction too (assuming its not too old of course).

 

As I have mentioned, tyre threads are not meant for dry weather grip. In fact threads reduces grip cause it reduces surface contact. botak tyres actually gives you the best dry grip than threaded ones.

 

But when your tyres become botak, grip usually degrade because of aging of the tyre compound. Unless you finished up your threads at the track and tyres become slicks, then your grip will actually improve....lol...

Quite true. Also depends on what you mean by dry. But I would assume its clear tarmac with no ice or snow, or sand. In any case, I don't think anyone should drive with botak tires. I know I wouldn't.

Sorry, I didn't state clearly. Yes, I meant clear dry tarmac.

 

Btw, if your tyre is becoming botak and you are not changing it (for whatever reason). Then you should do sensible things like drive slowly in the wet and ensure sufficient braking distance and not charge thru puddles of water or jam your brakes.

 

This assumes you are using high performance tyres with good wet weather grip of course. Cause even though tyre threads are thin, you have superior compound and this helps alot in wet weather. I have tried this myself. I was using a worn set of Falken fK452 (not old, just going botak due to aggressive driving). I can still corner and brake very well in the wet compared to a new set of ze522.

 

Of course, car design plays an important part as well, a 4WD will be more forgiving compared to a fwd and rwd.
