My 06 s60T5 makes a strange noise when i lock my steering to left or right for a turn...it sounds as if the tyres are rubbing against the body but my rims are only 225/50/17...shdnt be happening rite?

Did you change the wheels and use a wrong offset?

The rims are original so no issue with that...it only happens when i lock it...dun y also...maybe i shd send it for servicing...any idea how much at 83k km?

probably ball joint or CV going.

83k sounds about corect. these sort of stuff do go bad with mileage.

oic, so how do i get it resolve and how much do u reckon the damage wld be, hundreds?

depends on where you go to service the car.

 

got another mate driving the volvo went back to agent and was quoted about 2K to resolve a similar noise issue.

agent claim must change all CV joints.

 

if you can find a workshop that know the common issue with the S60. they can advise you better.

with any luck, probably can just change out the required bushing, mounts etc.

 

still be some amount of money. but definitely less than what the agent is asking.

Turn out, the inner tyre of both sides rub against the body of the the car when i lock the vehicle, does it signify something is wrong? wrong tyres?

as in full lock left, full lock right, the tyres will rub against the wheel arch?

 

shouldn't happen if using correct offset, correct tyres.

 

these sort of stuff is common if the guy use big wide tyres, or aggressive rim offset etc.

 

but i think you are pretty much stock?

Just wondering if anyone has experience with or ideas for fixing tire rub on an 03 S60. I have stock size tires (235-45-17 i think) and every time I make a tight turn the tires rub. It's always at low speeds - usually parking - so I'm not worried about damaging the tires. It's just gotten to the point where it's annoying and at times embarrassing. It's done this for the entire time I've owned it (2 years) and I'm just getting tired of hearing it.

 

Any ideas?

Go to your dealer and complain that a car that is only 2 years old should not be doing this and that it has been doing this since the beginning. Truth is, they can put longer stop locks on the front suspension that keeps the wheel from turning in so much. This is good for the tire rub but will make your turn radius much wider- meaning that you won't be able to turn as sharp as before. This still might be acceptable to you and the dealer should accommodate you. If they don't, then we can help you find the part numbers for this...then you should buy the stop locks and have an independent (cheaper) place install them. Or...just don't turn as sharp as you're turning. Unfortunately all of the newer Volvo designs suffer from this issue to some extent- some more than others.

My 04 S-60 T-5 had the tire rub since I bought the car new. My dealer installed the stops and did a 4 wheel alignment. Rub is gone but I have a larger turning radius now.

 

you are running now - 225/50-17

before was 215/50-17.

stock should be 235/45-17.

ok, it makes sense now that you are just rubbing it. the 225/50 is bigger than the old 215/50 you had.

 

ya, will put it to your tyres that causing it.

 

a few tricks to resolve it as in the earlier thread. or you can change tyres again.

Wow this is really helpful! I hope this will be gone when once i change to 18"....btw, any idea what is the ideal tyre size for 18" then? U probably have some formula to calculate rite?

Please advise. I'm driving Volvo S40 2.0 and rim is 18". Should i use 225/40-18 or 215/40-18 tyres for my car? Or 225/35-18 is more appropriate so as not to hit the fence.

what's the stock original size? then you can work the numbers from there.

The Volvo s60 turning radius is not that fantastic as it is a very powerful car and is used to protect the driveshaft from damage. That is why you dont often hear a Volvo driveshaft failing before its time.
