LeftRighty 2nd Gear February 18, 2011 Share February 18, 2011 (edited) ...but u will feel the car bog...the correct way is to start from gear 1 Not for high torques. Gear 1 burns rubber. Gear 2 is norm. Edited February 18, 2011 by LeftRighty
Bicolor 5th Gear February 18, 2011 Share February 18, 2011 Of course starting in gear 2 is possible for most cars, but whether its good for the car in the long run is another thing. Generally for most cars, I use gear 1. For lorries, gear 2.
Nzy Twincharged February 19, 2011 Share February 19, 2011 I think for cars moving off in gear 2 will wear out the clutch quickly. My dad used to drive his lorry and always start in gear 2 but when he did not need to lorry for his company anymore and switched to a car he still used gear 2 to move off out of habit. In the end the clutch wear out really fast.
SimonTan 2nd Gear February 19, 2011 Share February 19, 2011 For car. The engineer has designed the gear ratio of 1 & 2 to move off the car smoothly. So it's designed to move off from rest in gear 1, not gear2. Lorry is different as it's load is varying. Gear 1 is for super full loaded, to move off. If lorry not full loaded, gear 2 is 'strong' enough to move off from rest. Car moving off in gear2 is 'wrong' as it was not designed for. Of course for argument sake if car is downslop facing, starting from gear2 is doable.
The_Bear Turbocharged February 19, 2011 Share February 19, 2011 In my previous auto car, when switched to 'manual' mode, it will be in 2nd gear when moving off. I can switch to 1 manually but if I do nothing, it will move off in 2.
SimonTan 2nd Gear February 19, 2011 Share February 19, 2011 The only time car might need to move off in second gear is on icy and snowy condition. to prevent excessive wheel spin from rest.
Xtrocious 1st Gear February 20, 2011 Share February 20, 2011 For my auto car, it's 2nd gear under comfort mode and 1st gear under sports... If your car is powerful enough, you can move off in 3rd even (Porsches can do that I was told)...haha
NightWind 4th Gear February 20, 2011 Share February 20, 2011 I thought that the gear ratios are assigned based on the speed...moving off at Gear 2 is possible but you may not get the best torque outta the vehicle. This is because from the standstill start the max torque achieved in Gear 1 from stand still is still theoretically better than gear 2... For manual cars, the challenge in smooth quick acceleration is progressing the gearshifts smoothly from 0-60, 60-100, 100-150kph etc Of cause now adays most of the gear shifts will overlap in the upper ranges...but for a quick initial start I thought u still do so at Gear 1.....??? themagi Neutral Newbie February 20, 2011 Share February 20, 2011 Move off from stationary in 1st gear for me. If car is moving and gear in neutral e.g. when I coast to traffic light, then it depends on speed. ↡ Advertisement
