    Gear knob differences

I'm just wondering is there different between heavy and light weight gear knob? What type of material won't heat up so easily? My gear knob is really too scalding when parking under hot sunny day, steering wheel also. Any enlightenment or recommendation?
  2. Hi all, I had been away from sg for 3 years. May i ask what is the manual car available in the current market right now? Both new and used car. Thank you.
  3. The Mercedes Benz steering mounted gear shifter gets lots of flak and misunderstanding for not being traditional. Let me clear up some misgivings with this post and hopefully help fellow mercedes owners understand and operate their ride with more confidence. The top concern about the gear shifter is accidental activation of gears (due to mistaking it for the signal/wiper stalk). From my understanding of the shifter, it is an electronic shifter with no mechanical link to the transmission. That fact allows the Mercedes engineers to program in failsafe guards to ensure safety and protect the transmission. At low speed from 0 up to 10kph, the gear shifter is programmed to allow you to go from N to R. It is presumably to facilitate parking situation. See the attached photo I took of my own cluster LCD. Note the arrows. These arrow heads denote that it is possible to shift into these gears indicated. Note the speed. When the speed goes above 10kph, the arrow head at the R position disappear. Meaning you can at most engage N but not R in the event of a mistake. So, yes, you can accidentally engage neutral while you are driving but you will not be able to force the R mode without coming down to a <10kph speed. That will be a deliberate action imho. So, no, your 7G-9Gtronic will not self destruct without your deliberate help.
  4. Mitsubishi ASX with CVT (3 months) Got this problem in the mornings when engaging the reverse gear after the car is parked overnight on a level ground. It only happens when shifting from "P" to "R" where a loud sound (like something grinding or cracking) is heard and the car reverses normally. In "D" mode everything is normal and no noise is heard. Only happens like once or twice in a month, puzzling. Anyone knows if this is a serious problem?

  6. Hi guys, I have been facing transmission problem with my 2008 Toyota Harrier 2.4A Whenever I shift the auto gear to "D", the car will take 1 to 3 mins to engage into the gear. During the wait, the car is as though it is in "Neutral" gear. I do not face any problem with the "R" gear. The "D" shift responds much better after a 20mins drive (when i reach my destination). This is very annoying as sometimes I have to wait about 3 minutes before moving off from carpark. It also poses a danger when i'm doing a 3 point turn and the car stucks in the middle of the road until the "D" gear decides to engage after 2 to 3 mins. I have checked the auto gear fluid and it is at the optimum level. Gear fluid colour is also in a clear red colour. Anyone here knows what is wrong with the auto gear? Where can I bring it for a repair and how much would it approx. cost?
  7. Anyone here drives an auto car and shift to free gear when going down slope or cruise to a stop before reaching a traffic light? I tried doing that for one full tank and realised it actually save a fair bit of fuel. But that will also increase in ware n tear of the gears? Do u agree to such driving habit?
  8. Lately and quite frequently, after parking overnite or long hours, my car don't move when I engaged D gear. But R gear it can move backward. Even with 1 gear it doesn't move. Revving doesn't help. I discovered that with 2 gear, it moves. Then I change to D again, then it OK. What's is happening? My Nissan 8.5 years encounter first time encounter this problem. Last week, also first time, when on air-con, it doesn't work. Noticed fan not turning. After shaking a cable leading to the fan, air-con now ok. TG.
  9. Recently got a Fiat and sometimes the gear cannot be engaged for unknown reasons. Anybody else facing this same problem?
  10. A few months ago I got this manual accent. No issues with it except for this. Occasionally I cannot engage the first gear or the reverse gear from neutral gear. This happens when my car is stationary. So far no major issue with this except late moving off from traffic light or a bit delayed in reverse parking. I checked with the AD during my 1000 km and 5000 km check and they say nothing wrong and maybe it's how I stepped on my clutch. The thing is, this failure to engage still happens once in a while and in my car park i ever tried to replicate this by changing gear with my clutch not fully depressed half depressed and so on but not able to replicate the failure to engage. So I don't know if it's my fault or there is something wrong with transmission fluid or so on.... So I wondering if anyone ever faced this before and what was the cause. AD say nothing wrong with gear box. I ever thought of going to an external workshop if it happens again but I worry I kenna chopped carrot.

  14. It's been 2 weeks, noise gar gar.....coming from below. First though it was coming from that lousy tyres installed 4mths ago. Then slowly realised once 4th gear kicked-in the noise started to roar until the car slowed till 2nd gear speed then will the noise stopped. And btw its an old AWD 4 speed AT car. Checked GB fuild and it's full n clear in color, did an AT flush this Feb, for now only can't check the rear diff gear oil lvl. Going w/s tomolo, but if its the rear diff dry up, will the noise start in 4th gear? This stupid noise is like the gear grinding each other non-stop. Anyone experience this issue before?
  15. What is this VVTI gear? My toyota is 3 rd old, yesterday while driving suddenly the engine indicator light on. I sent to BM for checking and said is VVTI gear spoilt. Need to change at S$800 !!!. Luckily my wife I argue and they give free since I service during the warranty period and the car got problem after few days out from the warranty. IS the VVTI gear easy to spoil? The customer service said is due to poor maintenance. I told him that all my maintenance are from Toyota...he just keep quiet and say...aiyah sometimes it happened. Got like that meh?
  16. Hi guys I just got a used 2007 307Cc. Just after collecting car and when parking at my place, the gear stuck at N after I reverse car. After that no matter what I do I can never get the gear back to other gears as it's just stuck there. Anyone has this problem ? Is this a serious issue ? Vicom checks seems ok with no issues on gearbox and Transmisson. Dealer is taking car back to workshop to check but this has been disheartening esp after I just collected the car.
  17. Hi, Can anyone tell me what's wrong with my car? My car's clutch somethimes stucked and the gear was unable to engage and the car seem to be like a auto gear. This usu happened when in the carpar where I depressed the clutch for to long. Please help. Thank you.
  18. My car is due for scrap soon, and am thinking of getting another car. Am budget conscious and no not mind size, style or performance, but as wife and/or my dad might sometimes drive it too, am looking for a car that has auto transmission and also ABS (for basic safety concern). Old car is fine, and am thinking of the non-jap makes as cars of 4-8 yr old came in at time when yen was strong so jap makes should be more expensive? Am thinking of Chevrolet Aveo. Is that the cheapest car that comes with auto and ABS? Anyone has any advice on this? Much appreciated. tks.

  21. Here is an instructional video on how to replace your manual shifter knob. I believe this design is common for most Hyundai models and some other brands in the market. It also helps to understand how you can easily remove the leather blanket of the shifter stick. Very simple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_fyZ9l1nK8
  22. it was raining heavily yesterday afternoon at bukit timah area. and this vios driver was so kan jiong to provide shelter for his mother and GF waiting for him at a pickup point that he engaged a R gear instead of P. he was lucky that i was sitting inside my car at the time and i saw the vios was actually started to move and reversing without a driver. at first i was really thought someone could have taken over the wheel from the inside. the heavy rain dropping on my screen was also affecting my visual too. later, i decided to make a dash to stop the car from any damages. so guys, this is what MT is safer than AT. double check your gear position.
