  1. My 14 year old W212 had this intermittent rattling noise from the front when decelerating to about 40kmh to 20kmh, it will happen when engine is heated up. The rattle noise sounds like a rotating mechanism knocking or marbles hitting some metal walls. The problem is difficult to troubleshoot due to the intermittent nature of the noise and only when the car is moving . I have to highlight that I am one who will not save on maintenance, so it is not due to lack of servicing. Let me share the trouble I have to go through to nail the cause, or at least, I believe the mechanic have found the cause. It started off with the intermittent noise, to rule out some of the possible causes and guess work, I want to highlight that I have replaced engine mounts , transmission mounts, belts , tensioner, cam adjusters, timing chain etc, even the drive shaft bearing and bracket was replaced. Most of those mentioned items were replaced as part of wear and tear or as preventive maintenance along the way during various servicing schedules till my car has reached 200k km now, except for the drive shaft bearing and bracket , it was the one that I told my workshop to replace it as part of problem isolation. I also asked the mechanic to check if there was metal parts like heat shield or exhaust that may come very close to contact with other metal or mountings, but there was none. 2nd workshop Since the first workshop couldn't pin point the problem, I asked another of my regular workshop, the mechanic heard the noise and told me could be auto transmission and he will have to open up the autotrans and service the whole unit, I was not convinced that it could be the autotrans but I could not fault the mechanic since he had only heard the noise for the first time. I told him more likely to be the engine and asked if he could check the valve lifter etc, but he didnt think so. 3rd Workshop To validate the findings form the 2nd workshop, i sent the car to an autotrans specialist that i repaired my Odyssey gear box before to get a 2nd opinion, incidentally, the car came up with a engine check light when we rev the engine hard during the test drive, he had also heard the noise. He told me my ECU was having problem after reading the code from OBD. Again i was not convinced the noise can be caused by ECU, I didnt want to speculate why the engine check light first. I check the error code when i reached home, it was indicating cylinder 4 having fault. 4th workshop Not convinced with the autotrans specialist, I sent my car to another autotrans and engine specialist workshop, the guy heard the noise, check the code, he didnt know what happen, asked me to leave the car with him. After the next full day, he told me he could not find the problem, I asked him to open the engine block to check, look out for hairline cracks, valve lifters defects etc, he asked me if i was sure that I wanted to open the engine block, i told him to proceed. Another day had gone and he said still no fault found, I was a little panic then, I told myself cant be so complicated or bad luck. Fortunately, on the 4th day, he told he he found the knocking, it was due to a piston that was slightly loosen and was knocking against the cylinder. With that, I was more convinced with the finding, at least it was likely the cause of knocking and it explained why only when the engine was heated up. Those who know about engine would know what happen next, the engine will have to be overhauled. He told me that will need at least 5k, but that was not my concern, I am hoping that the problem could be resolved once and for all. My experience indicates one thing, one needs to have some car knowledge in order to drive an old car, otherwise, otherwise one maybe taken for a ride by workshops. Not that they will cheat but the problem is when they only get to see or hear a problem for once, their diagnostic and conclusion may not be accurate, especially when a problem is intermittent, the owner who drive the car everyday have to provide feedback accurately, take the input from mechanics and decide if the findings make sense. Now on the workshops, one may think that I anyhow find a workshop to diagnose a strange problem, no i did not, all the workshops that i engaged are not fly by night workshops, they are reputable and very experience workshops , just that the problem i had was unique and more difficult to troubleshoot. The repair should be done by mid to late next week, I really hope the problem could be resolved and I personally think so. Meantime I have to be contented with my Altis.🤣

    Yishun Happenings

pub or café ? owner/operator trying to pull a fast one... Hood Vibes pub at Yishun HDB void deck draws complaints of noise & patrons smoking outside A newly-opened pub at the void deck of a HDB in Yishun has apparently drawn complaints from residents and caught the attention of a Member of Parliament (MP). Hood Vibes is located at 468A Yishun Street 43. It seems that the pub started operating around a month ago, according to when their business hours were last updated on Google. Goh shared that he was accompanied by officers from the Housing Development Board (HDB), who informed him that a café license had been granted to the business, and who "were also surprised to see what was clearly a liquor joint". HDB told Goh that they are investigating into the potential breach of licensing conditions. Goh assured residents in his post that HDB is looking into the matter, and highlighted that the agency "will do its part to prevent dis-amenities, and mitigate disturbance to the peace and safety of our neighbourhood". A resident of 469A Yishun Street 43, a neighbouring block from the pub, spoke to Mothership under condition of anonymity. She is part of a WhatsApp group chat which includes residents of the area, and shared that there have been complaints of pub patrons smoking outside the place and creating noise. Some have also said that apparently, the music from the pub is quite loud. Since the pub opened, residents with children also "have to walk a longer route away from the area" when heading to or leaving their home to avoid the patrons smoking there. The resident shared that the pub was still operating as of Aug. 16.
  3. Recently my 2010 Altis steering rack start to emit "tek tek tek" noise if the road is uneven or after the bump. The noises will go away by itself after driving for awhile making it hard to pinpoint what is the issues when visiting the workshop. I have change front and rear suspension, control arms and stabilizer linkages 2 years ago so these components should be fine. Anyone had similar problem to share? Thanks
  4. https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/extending-quiet-period-15-hours-part-recommendations-manage-neighbourhood-noise-3089041 Extending quiet period by 1.5 hours part of recommendations to manage neighbourhood noise The panel recommended that quiet hours be extended from the current 10.30pm to 7am to between 10pm and 8am. 21 Nov 2022 01:58PM(Updated: 21 Nov 2022 02:07PM) The Community Advisory Panel (CAP) on Neighbourhood Noise submitted the recommendations to the Municipal Services Office and the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) on Saturday (Nov 19) after conducting public engagements from May to September 2022. Among the recommendations is the extension of quiet hours by 1.5 hours, from the current 10.30pm to 7am. The new recommended hours would be between 10pm and 8am. CAP also urged residents to adhere to the quiet hours. OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS Other recommendations brought forward by the panel included calls for residents to resolve issues with their neighbours informally and the need for considerate behaviour outside of quiet hours. "The proposed norms from CAP called for residents to resolve issues with their neighbours through informal discussions and relationship building, instead of approaching the authorities to intervene in the first instance," said the joint press release. The panel, which was first convened in April, has proposed "a list of positive actions that residents should practise in their daily lives". Recognising that community norms alone are insufficient to address all noise disputes, CAP also recommended that the Government review the process for managing disputes over community noise, and "support it with the right enforcement powers". "This will deter offenders who deliberately create unacceptable noise, such as those who intentionally irritate their neighbours with noise, and allow stronger actions to be taken against them," it added. The suggested process included the designation of an agency to respond to and take enforcement action against neighbourhood noise issues, making mediation between neighbours mandatory, and providing greater clarity on evidence required in the resolution of disputes. The Panel also recommended the adoption of quantitative noise thresholds in the form of a decibel limit. Senior Minister of State for National Development Sim Ann, speaking at the closing dialogue for the CAP on Neighbourhood Noise, said: "We need to strike a good balance between using informal means of neighbour dispute resolution vs using hard levers such as the law and government enforcement." "On the one hand, using laws and enforcement may effectively eradicate certain problems – at least for a while. But during this process, we may lose something intangible and change the texture of society – going away from our ideals of building a more gracious, cohesive, considerate community where we can discuss problems with one another and to give and take," she said. "Let us keep our neighbours in mind when going about our daily activities, and actively work together to build a better living environment for all to enjoy," Ms Sim added. ENGAGING MORE THAN 4,000 MEMBERS OF PUBLIC The report is a culmination of the public engagements conducted by the panel from May to September 2022. The panel engaged close to 4,400 members of the public through focus group discussions, surveys, and meetings with relevant stakeholders in the drafting of the report, MCCY and the Municipal Services Office said. "While these proposals may not be an immediate solution for some of the issues, we are confident they will over time help to build a kinder and quieter Singapore for residents. "We look forward to working further with the Government on our proposals,” said Dr William Wan, Chairperson of the Community Advisory Panel on Neighbourhood Noise. Ms Sim said that the panel "raised very useful suggestions, and we will look into them seriously." "It is our intent under the Forward SG exercise to empower residents and partner the community in addressing community issues that (the) Government alone cannot resolve, particularly when it involves promoting positive community norms," she said. In a Facebook post on Saturday, Ms Sim also said, "We all need to play a part in creating a #QuieterSG." "CAP has raised several good suggestions in the report. The Government will review them seriously and provide more updates when ready," said Ms Sim in her post.
  5. Hi all, I'm new here with a recent purchase of the avante S model. Since the purchase, there has been a creaking sound from the under carriage on the driver side. Only can be heard at 100km/h or above. I sent it in for a check and the mechanic said he tightened some bolt at the under carriage and asked me to monitor. Even after this, the sound is still there. Anyone encountered this? Apologies if this has been raised before as I have not read through the entire thread yet. Thanks 🙏
  6. NEA to lower vehicle noise levels, tighten motorbike emissions from 2023 Anyone knows what's the current noise level of a stock supercar? How about those LTA-compliant aftermarket exhaust?
  7. Ever since I changed to bigger rims, my brakes start to squeak every morning when I start the car. It goes away after a few brakings. I doubt changing rims make this noise. Anyone can advise what could be the problem? Thx
  8. Have just installed a 4-channel active sound system with DSP. Noticed that whenever I play Spotify music via bluetooth connection to the DSP, there is a hissing/static noise in the background, especially when at the points where there's silence or start of the music piece. However, when I plug my phone directly to the head unit, the hissing/static noise disappears. Using Android phone currently, but have the same results when trying out using my wife's iPhone. Have gone back to the audio shop a couple of times and they have adjusted the DSP gains down, but still can hear the hissing/static sound. They don't seem to be able to resolve the issue so far. One of their staff said that it could be due to the DSP being an entry level one, which I'm not convinced. Does anyone know how to resolve, or any recommendations of an experience ICE workshop that can solve this issue?
  9. Went up to their unit to ask them to lower volume. They said ok but continue jamming away. Belong to a certain race as you all know it. Call police come laio then now start again. I think need to look for MP
  10. A Mercedes-Benz CLA Coupe has been caught doing 'Boom Boom Boom' noises in one of the HDB carparks along Hougang Street 61 early in the morning last night. This has not gone well for him as videos of him revving his car that has been tuned to make "pop and crackle" noises has gone viral. s.MP4 According to unnamed sources, it seemed that the green CLA Coupe owner has been approached by home owners staying nearby for the noise pollution and a fight ensued. The police was called in and the CLA owner looked like he has been charged for causing hurt a.k.a Penal Code 323 as we can see from the Whatsapp screenshots. He was intoxicated too but was not charged for drink-driving as his female friend was at the wheel.
  11. How can one stop motorists from making too much noise with their engines? Someone in Malaysia reckoned that building speed humps outside his place will work. As seen on an article by Mothership.sg, Nor Muhamad Roslam Harun, who lives in Besut, Malaysia said that the exhaust noises caused by the vehicles disturbed his sleep. So the 40-year-old, who was "depressed" due to this, built 11 speed bumps to slow down vehicles travelling past his house. The bumps which stretched across a 40m stretch of road cost him RM1,080 (S$354.83) and it was from part of the i-Sinar Employees Provident Fund. For those who aren't in the know, the i-Sinar fund are for workers who are self-employed and had their business suffered due to COVID-19. Soon, the humps pissed motorists off and he had to remove them after videos of people using the road went viral. As explained by Roslam, he originally wanted to build lower speed bumps. However, the asphalt hardened too fast, resulting in higher and bigger speed bumps. He has since apologised hired the pros to level all the speed bumps, including the additional two that were on the road originally after the police advised him.

  15. When I accelerate my Lancer up to and beyond 80km/h, the "womming" noise can be heard from the front & seem to be from the engine compartment. When the speed reach 100km/h & beyond, the noise get louder. Can anyone enlighten me on what could be the problem with my car. Thanks
  16. Rattle noises are very common in many cars, even when new. There are a thousand causes of unwanted noises in a car and I'm sure many of you had spent many frustrated hours trying to rid them. I am very sensitive to interior cabin noises and will always spend alot of efforts trying to identify and eliminate them. So I thought of starting this thread for everybody to share how they solve their unwanted car noises. Here, I want to share one type that had been bugging me for 6 months and how to solve it. I have other cases and I will subsequently post them in this thread, with photos to guide. I drive a 2014 Sylphy. This particular rattle noise is a single "tiak" sound that sounded usually when turning or small road perturbations at slower speed. It seems to come from front passenger dash area. It sounded like something loose hitting gently against plastic. Had tried to rectify it with tan chong during last 3 servicing but not successful. I was pretty sure the source is from within the cabin or dash area and not from engine bay area so I had been spending majority of my efforts internally. I was wrong. It came from engine bay area. There is this cable that was not secured, at the battery side, near to the front left suspension top mount. See photo. If i manually hit it against the metal chassis, it produced a similar tiak sound. So i use a cable tie to secure it so it does not move freely. After that, that tiak sound was no longer there. I tested through 1 day of normal driving. I am not sure what signal this cable carries but there is a similar one at the other side. I secured that as well. So look around your engine bay area for such unsecured cables and clamp it down!
  17. Lately the wheels or below the car produced cracking noise whenever I make left turn. Or especially I make an up slope left turn. The cracking noise at the wheel will be audible. And it comes and go randomly. Sometimes few days also don't have. And 1 night, suddenly it become quite bad. Then next day it is ok again. What could be the fault? Some say it is bearing?
  18. I recently installed a set of AP racing big brake kit. Right after installation, it produce a loud squealing noise during braking. This was resolved after adding brake shim and grease and chamfering the pads. It has a groaning noise when car is in D gear trying to crawl forward while I depressed the brake pedal slightly to catering for creeping of the car. I noticed many auto gear cars have this noise but it didn’t have on my stock brakes. Can any gurus advise please is it his normal and how to resolve it? Thanks.
  19. Hi Guys, I have a VW with a clicking noise, like a spring being pulled while the steering wheel is being turned. been into VW for the 6th time and was told that this is normal. they have relubed, replace the spring and the noise is still back after 1-2 weeks is this normal? or what could be wrong?
  20. Did tyres rotation recently with balancing. However after that the car when on the move has tire noise. Sounds like helicopter. Like what u here with some trucks...voov voop voop sound. Took the car back to the place I did rotation he say tire balancing will not cause the noise. Is the tyres..but mine is quite new and before rotation and balance don't have such sound. He say to eliminate sound just rotate back but I will have uneven wear! So is he bluffing? Is it a bad balancing?
  21. Hello gurus, Need your advise here, am experienceing aeroplane noise on my tweeters whenever I step on the gas pedal. Had install a microfilter but the noise can still be heard alittle. However, if I switch off my air con, the noise will be reduced by alot. Any idea wat went wrong ? Tried re-attach and tighten the cables of my amp but it does not helps.
  22. It's been 2 weeks, noise gar gar.....coming from below. First though it was coming from that lousy tyres installed 4mths ago. Then slowly realised once 4th gear kicked-in the noise started to roar until the car slowed till 2nd gear speed then will the noise stopped. And btw its an old AWD 4 speed AT car. Checked GB fuild and it's full n clear in color, did an AT flush this Feb, for now only can't check the rear diff gear oil lvl. Going w/s tomolo, but if its the rear diff dry up, will the noise start in 4th gear? This stupid noise is like the gear grinding each other non-stop. Anyone experience this issue before?
  23. Hello All... Would like to ask if anyone know what could be the problem if some vibrating sound occur when turning right? Am driving a 8 years old Lancer GLX now. Thanks!
  24. Hi guys! I am driving a 07' Latio. My aircon been making a hissing noise for awhile, went to workshop, change my cooling coil and all is great.
