  4. Here we go again... S'pore water deal to be reviewed Sim Bak Heng New Straits Times Monday, Feb 17, 2014 JOHOR BARU - For the first time in 53 years, the raw water agreement between Johor and its neighbour across the Causeway, Singapore, is set to undergo a review. The Attorney-General's Chambers has given the Johor government the green light to reassess the rate charged for the raw water it supplies to Singapore, which has been in place since 1961. Following the move, Johor is expected to raise the rate sometime this year. It will also embark on a "zero water dependency" programme so that it would no longer need to purchase treated water from Singapore in the future. Although the rate has yet to be announced, it is believed that the state will stick to the rate proposed during the tenure of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, which was 60 sen per 1,000 gallons of raw water. Currently, under the terms of the Malaysia-Singapore Agreement in 1961 and 1962, Singapore's Public Utilities Board (PUB) purchases raw water from Johor at 3 sen per 1,000 gallons (4,546.09 litres) and sells the treated water at 50 sen per 1,000 gallons to Johor. Johor sells 250 million litres of raw water to Singapore daily, and buys two per cent of the total back from them in the form of treated water, equivalent to five million litres daily. State Public Works, Rural and Regional Development Committee chairman Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the state executive council had discussed and raised the matter with the Federal Government last August. Since then, the Attorney-General's Chambers has been studying the legal aspects of the raw water agreement inked between the two countries more than five decades ago. "Early last month, we received a favourable reply from the A-G's Chambers, with regards to the legal aspects of the revised rates," he said. Photo Gallery: From seawater to drinking water Click on thumbnail to view photos. Source: PUB, HyFlUx, The New Paper "The A-G's Chambers met a Johor legal advisory team in Kuala Lumpur in early January and told them that we have the right to review the rate. With the green light, it is just a matter of time before we come up with the new rate." Hasni said the state government was anticipating that when the rate of raw water rate is increased to 60 sen per 1,000 gallons, Singapore would also hike the rate of treated water sold to Johor. In view of this, he said Johor would launch a "zero water dependency" programme by June this year. Under the programme, the state government will lay more pipes and improve the capacity of water treatment plants. "We hope to accomplish the programme within a year, which is by June next year. Once we have accomplished the programme, Johor will be self-sufficient and does not have to buy treated water from Singapore," said Hasni. He said raising the price of raw water was long overdue and Malaysia had been doing a social service by selling raw water to Singapore at a low rate for too many years. He said the new rate will reflect the actual price of raw water. (source: http://news.asiaone.com/news/malaysia/spore-water-deal-be-reviewed )

  8. STRAITS TIMES Quote: Hundreds stranded at Tanjong Pagar after MRT breaks down Broken-down train leads to crowds at platform, station The crowd at Tanjong Pagar MRT station last night, after a train breakdown saw SMRT staff close the fare gates to prevent overcrowding on the platform. -- PHOTO: PHILIP LIM Hundreds of people were left stranded at Tanjong Pagar MRT station on Friday evening, after staff there closed the fare gates to prevent overcrowding on the platforms. The cause was an SMRT train which had broken down on the East-West Line, resulting in a 20-minute delay that affected some 6,500 commuters in total. An SMRT spokesman said a westbound train at Kallang MRT developed a fault at around 5.50pm, and had to be taken out of service. This led to the disruption on the westbound service between Kallang and Bugis. Trains were turned around at Eunos and Bugis to maintain the westbound service on unaffected stretches of the line. Full services resumed at around 6.10pm. Sauce: http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking...ry_723610.html HWZ: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/showthread.php?t=3441312

  12. The Hidden Agenda of the Straits Times Editorial http://singaporerecalcitrant.blogspot.com/...aits-times.html Can the Straits Times (ST) honestly say that it stands neutral in the present hustings? Everyone knows that it is under the tight control and direction of the Singapore Press Holdings helmed by a former PAP deputy prime minister who is in reality the government spin doctor and the ST can best be described as a propaganda broadsheet of the PAP. Anyone with any article critical of the government or its leaders aspiring to find printing of it in the ST will invariably come up against a wall of courteous denial, as the famous author Catherine Lim experienced recently when she sent a satirical letter about the comical Minister Mentor to the ST for airing in its Forum. Let's examine the implication of the ST editorial :GE 2011. What do voters really want? What does it try to imply by saying that the voter cannot vote for the opposition with the assurance that PAP will be returned to power in any case? It is a given that, with the present political state, the PAP will be returned to power but perhaps with a reduced majority. Is not the ST calling on the voters not to vote the opposition? It shows the ST is treading on questionable ground as a national newspaper supposedly dedicated to an objective presentation of news to the public. A blind man can easily discern that this is hardly objective by no stretch of imagination, Next the editor cannot resist the temptation of touching on the hotly contested Aljunied GRC which is being closely watched by not only the public and voters but also the PAP leaders as well as the opposition. To expect the editor to present an objective and impartial view of the electoral fray in Aljunied GRC may be somewhat unrealistic. He insinuated that a Workers' Party (WP) victory will not be cost-free. The so-called exquisite quality of the PAP team is given great play, especially the team leader Foreign Minister George Yeo. He is being put in the same distinguished category of the late Foreign Minister S. Rajaratnam. The editor asked if Singapore would have been better off if Mr. S. Rajaratnam, Singapore's first Foreign Minister, had been defeated in the 1963 GE as he almost was. The answer is given as an obvious no. The editor further asked if voters want a strong opposition badly enough to boot out of office so many able people. Can they vote against Rajaratnam, he asked? Even a blind man can see where the ST editor's tendentious arguments are leading to. Firstly it is invidious to compare George Yeo with the late S. Rajaratnam and secondly it is sacrilege to invoke the late Foreign Minister's name in such circumstances. Comparison of merits between George Yeo and the late S. Rajaratnam is at best subjective. ST is never a neutral newspaper and its tendentious deprecation of the Workers' Party is a natural progression of its heinous design. The electoral battle in Aljunied GRC has begun and it is best for newspapers not to take sides, leaving it to the contesting parties to convince the voters respectively and win their votes.

  16. SingaporeHOME > BREAKING NEWS > SINGAPORE > STORY Mar 3, 2011Give tips or pay service charge? Take our poll THE big push for productivity has started, with Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean revealing in Parliament on Tuesday that almost $500 million of the new National Productivity Fund is available to help companies in the productivity drive. For those in the food and beverage industry, this could mean greater automation and reliance on better skilled labour. One intriguing option: Getting customers to tip instead of paying a service charge. Placing the onus on service staff to earn their tips may raise service standards and productivity levels. But will penny-pinching Singaporeans play by the rules? Tell us what you think. Source. Vote for voluntary tipping or pay service charge! Personally I prefer tipping..
  17. THE driving licence of motorists who commit serious driving offences will be immediately suspended while they are being investigated, instead of waiting until they are charged in court. The move to give police more power to act against errant drivers was part of the changes to the Road Traffic Act passed in Parliament on Wednesday. In explaining the need for the change, Senior Minister of State for Law and Home Affairs Ho Peng Kee cited the case of a motorist, who had caused the death of a young woman sales agent while test-drving a sports car. The driver lost lost control of the car and caused an accident which killed the woman agent. The man was ultimately jailed for seven months for reckless driving and disqualified from driving for 10 years - 18 months after the accident. 'During this time, members of the public expressed concern that the motorist could resume his car-shopping activities, despite the crash and death of his passenger,' said Associate Professor Ho. He added that it was in the interest public safety that motorists be disallowed from driving during the investigation. But he added that 'immediate suspension will not be imposed in all cases where death or serious injury or serious damage to structures or building is caused.' 'Moreover, the suspension will be rescinded if investigations subsequently reveal that the motorist was not responsible for the offence or it is decided that the motorist will not be charged or that the charge would be withdrawn. In addition, an appeal can be made to the Minister within 14 days of receiving the suspension notice,' said the minister. source http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_578946.html drive safe everyone....be a gentlemen signal when changing lanes and drive safe...

  20. Anyone went to the show as well? Waiting a few hours to catch the magic show where the Volkswagen was "teleported" from the Leng Kee showroom onto the stage. I sort of anticipated that the car will be teleported that way, so earlier the day, was scrutinizing the stage. Also looked below the stage, and was see-through. Still figuring out how they did it. BTW, for 4D punters, the 4-digit on the car came out in Sun's draw, although jumped. So buy ibet or Roll will tio. Pity I didnt buy.
  21. I don't subscribe to the ST newspaper and usually buy on Wed and weekends. This Wed, the price was up 10cents to 90 cents. Today, it is S1.00. The lady at the newstand says the reason is because the print today got more pages. It's disturbing isn't it...not because of the 10 or 20 cents but the fact that they can just print a diff price tag they want on the paper anytime they want. I believe subscribers may not be affected for the time being. Come to think of it, 20 cents increase over 80 cents is 25% increase, could it be to compensate for the electricity increase of 22%?
