Keithchue 5th Gear March 26, 2011 Share March 26, 2011 bros, yesterday went to regular mech for reg servicing for my 05 vios, usually using sparkplug IK16-xxxx, saw them using IK20-xxx, spark plugs, both are from denso...when asked them, they said as they do not have stock for IK16, they used IK20, assured me the same, in fact more power in sparking, is this true? what is the difference between the two of them? thanks ↡ Advertisement

Melvyn Neutral Newbie March 27, 2011 Share March 27, 2011 sorry, my technical knowledge a bit lacking, can help to explain? In very basic terms => High heat range, i.e., colder plugs are for highly tuned high HP engines Low heat range, i.e., hotter plugs are for lower HP engines So, if your avatar pic is an indication of your ride, use cold plugs. Which in your case, shd be wrong plug as you shd be looking at IK22 and above. If it's a Impreza 1.6TS, you used the correct plug.

The difference in IK16 and IK20 is the heat range. IK16 would be considered heat range 5 for NGK specs, IK20 is heat range 6. Higher number means its a colder plug. If the plug is too cold, it can cause fouling on the plugs and actually degrade performance. Purpose of using correct heat range is to ensure plugs stay within the optimum operating temp. Howver, jump 1 number higher is usually OK, if they use IK22, the NO NO.......
