What is the counselled about?

This recruit failed miserably as he gave himself up so easily. He will not survive a day in POW training.

Mindef so clever never say what is so wrong about maid carrying his bag during off duty period. Just say be mindful of conduct in public.

Since this NSF was not given extra duty, it would suggest that there is nothing lawfully or regimentally worng with the maid carrying the bag.

THE Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has completed its investigation into the recent case of a serviceman who was photographed with his domestic helper carrying his field pack ('Deafening silence in army backpack saga' by Mr Patrick Tan; last Saturday).

The serviceman concerned has identified himself to his commander.

He was a recruit undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory phase prior to the Basic Military Training phase.

The recruit is remorseful for his actions and realises that it was wrong for him to have allowed this.

He has been counselled and continues his training. The SAF has reminded all servicemen to be mindful of their conduct in public.

The full-time national serviceman (NSF) in the photograph has owned up, concluding the Singapore Armed Forces' (SAF) investigation into the matter.

The Ministry of Defence's (Mindef) director of public affairs. Colonel Desmond Tan, revealed in a statement yesterday that the NSF had identified himself to his commander.

Col Tan indicated in the letter sent to the media that the NSF 'was a recruit undergoing the Physical Training Preparatory (PTP) phase prior to the Basic Military Training (BMT) phase".

PTP is an eight-week programme that less-fit conscripts have to undergo before BMT.

my paper understands from sources that when the news of the photograph broke on March 28, the NSF's parents were livid.

The family did not expect the photograph taken of the NSF to be blown out of proportion.

The NSF, who has at least one older sibling, was apparently unsure about what to do, and was afraid of the consequences he might face if he was identified as the person in the photograph.

I think this response is just right... MINDEF counselled the fella, and he probably learned his lesson and woun't repeat the mistake. The issue was proper conduct after all, not a crime.

I think the public should move on.

The counselling is about why the recruit had no initiative to apply for excuse full-pack the moment he was enlisted.

On whether Singapore society has become "soft", new PAP candidate Tan Chuan-Jin said that for every urban society that progresses economically, "it is inevitable".

Bridgadier-General (NS) Tan was commenting yesterday on the incident where a maid carried a full-times national servicemen's field pack. BG (NS) Tan was introduced with two other PAP candidates, former EDB director Low Yen Ling and unionist Patrick Tay.

"I dont think (he) represents most of my active NSmen nor NSFs. (But) in an army of our size, there will be people who are not as rugged."

If i'm the instructor, he will get hell from me. I will make him carry his full backpack every day, marching on the parade square.

^&&*%$##%.... its a bloody shame on his parents too.

It's not about being soft or not as rugged. Ppl still do not see that it's our lifestyle. Over the years sgp have prosper and the lifestyle of its ppl has become better, I believe more so in the future. The younger generation will do more things like this that will irk the older generation.

Obviously the reporter knew who the family and NSF name!!

Now now....how did the reported know about it?

On another note.....this NSF is "afraid of the consequences".

Where did this fear come from? From society or from army or from friends or just in his own mind?

What consequences is he worried about? Sign extra? or kena tekan by instructors?

I read a post by a defence specialist and he mentioned there's no specific rule governing this carrying of bag by maid. It's more of a general rule to conduct themselves well in public.

And what is so WRONG to get the maid to carry his fullpack?

Its just public opinion that was the issue.

Investigations would have found him out eventually. At least to the boy's credit, he was honest. He admitted it and owned up. Lets not call him stupid for that.

Counselling is the right response in this case.
