Because in singapore, despite only having 60% popular vote, the WINNER TAKES ALL. They control every goddamn thing, including the judiciary, the civil service, the stat boards, and as a result they indirectly control the media, the PA, the GLCs, etc. What a fcuking sham.

anyway, i am not trying to saying Singapore is similar to USA. rather using one incident to show democracy flawed even in king of democracy because i dont think its correct to say that ppl vote PAP means they dont support democracy. Minus those who vote for fear of course.

USA look more balance because each parties have their own strong hold in different states that had been building up from many decades. WP is helping us and themselves, but i cannot say so for other party.

The president is elected through the electoral college, so even if he gets a lower percentage of individual votes but higher number of electoral votes, he wins, like GW Bush in 2000.

 

The difference is that in the USA, the president's executive powers can be checked by congress and the judiciary. So the presidential elections only contribute to 1/3 of government.

 

The other 1/3 of govt, the Congress consisting of the Senate and House of Reps are also democratically elected.

You fcuking idiot. Why do you keep babbling about 2000 presidential elections? The winner of the presidential elections in the USA does not make him all-powerful. The president himself does not form the US govt.

 

Maybe Bush had a smaller percentage of individual votes but he clearly won the electoral college and that in the USA is a win and he becomes president. In the state of florida, the GHW bush and Clinton administration-appointed Supreme Court judges ruled in GW Bush's favour in Bush vs Gore.

 

Compare the limited power of the President of the USA with singapore, where the prime minister together with his political party is given the mandate as long as his people win 2/3 seats in parliament through the unfair GRC system. They sure did not win 2/3 of the Singapore voters. Why should they form the govt then? Winner takes all no? The GRC system itself IS undemocratic and was invented by the PAP to preserve its power by artificial high entry barrier for opposition.
