Now then I know there's a Soft Belly Fat Vs. Hard Belly Fat and the difference can mean LIFE and DEATH! Must admit I used to drink quite a bit of beer but has refrain from it for years [laugh], came across this article on the net and hope to let brothers here know the dangers.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/338079-s...hard-belly-fat/

Overview

Belly fat isn't all the same. One type of belly fat seems squishy and is easy to grab between your fingers; the other is like a bowling ball in the middle of the gut. The differences between the two types of fat don't end there. Understanding the dramatic difference between the two types of belly fat may extend your lifespan, especially if you carry extra weight in the abdominal region.

Subcutaneous vs. Visceral

The belly fat you can grab in your hand is subcutaneous fat, which resides between your skin and abdominal wall. This fat tends to be more visible than deeper fat, but it isn't as harmful as visceral fat, which surrounds your abdominal organs, according to MayoClinic.com.

Causes

Aging causes your metabolism to slow down. Being sedentary can also contribute to weight gain as you get older. However, factors such as age and lack of physical activity don't directly influence the amount of visceral fat you have. Hormonal changes that occur after menopause can cause women to store more fat in their bellies. Additionally, some people inherit a tendency to be "apple-shaped" as opposed to "pear-shaped."

Health Risks

Visceral fat is linked with a variety of health problems, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance and diabetes, according to UAB Medicine. These conditions increase your risk of stroke and heart attack. Visceral fat may be linked to such health conditions because it's thought to be biologically active. This means it acts more like an endocrine organ or gland that produces hormones and other substances that may damage your health, according to Harvard Health Publications. Having too much visceral fat may throw off the functioning of hormones that help keep the body in balance.

Screening

You can determine whether you're likely to have too much visceral fat by taking a few simple measurements. Wrap a tape measure around your waist. You may have a dangerous amount of visceral fat if you are a woman and your waist is at least 35 inches, or if you're a man whose waist is at least 40 inches around. You may also be at increased risk for health problems related to belly fat if your waist-to-hip ratio is over .80 as a woman and over .90 as a man.

Treatment

Eating fewer calories and burning off more calories through exercise can help you burn off visceral fat. Visceral fat seems to burn off quickly once you commit to losing weight. For optimum benefits, get at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise on most days and do weight-training sessions two to three days per week, recommends UAB Medicine. You may also lose weight at a rate of 1 lb. to 2 lbs. per week if you cut down your daily caloric intake by 500 to 1,000 calories. However, consult your doctor about your weight loss plans to ensure that your method is ideal for your individual needs.

It was the Japanese (and not Mayo clinic) back in the 90s who first noticed this phenomena. Medical researchers in Japan wondered why Sumo wrestlers did not seem to experience the same incidence of chronic disease as fat people and remained seemingly healthy.

Subsequent CT scan analyses revealed that the abdominal fat that Sumo wrestlers had were largely subcutaneous, whereas the average fat man/woman had substantial visceral fat.

Sumo wrestlers supposedly can burn 6,000 kcals a day from training and can consume 10,000 kcals largely in fat free foods - they sit together and eat steamboat everyday. These lifestyle habits could have fundamentally altered their distribution of fat.

The thinking that arose from these observations was that visceral fat (wrapped around the internal organs) delivered lipid/cholesterol rich blood to the liver via the splanchnic circulation. This in turn resulted in fatty liver, insulin resistance, diabetes, high cholesterol etc.etc.etc. *blah*blah*blah*

So even if one exercises actively (like 6,000 kcal) and eats a ton of steamboat daily with a bunch of fatties, and still remains fat/chubby, it's still indefinitely better than one who is fat and does not exercise (like me) [laugh][laugh]

I think that's the common unhealthy lifestyle in Singapore. How much time do you have for exercise when by the time you reach home, it's already 9 to 10pm+ [rolleyes]

I always feel NS is partly responsible for our big bellies since the introduction of SFI catered food.

During NS we tend to exercise more and once we hit the canteen, the mountain of food from SFI we will finish without issues. But no problem then as we eat as much as we burn.

Now that we are out of NS, we burn much less as most of us work in A/C offices sitting our butts of.....but our food intake is still same as during NS times due to our stomach already expanded to take in so much after the 2.5 years of "training" in NS.

As a result, a nation full of bellied guys, plus that age/metabolism thingy kicking in....it's double the combo.

I had a NS buddy, lean and fit last time, a IPPT gold personnel......Now he's fatter than the fattest guy in our platoon during NS.

We are wat we eat, it's still not too late to control our diet and food intake.

My best investment to date was not some blu chip stock or property(i wish lah), but my gym membership. The thought of forking out money motivates me to go to the gym to make it work.

Till date i have lowerd my blood pressure and averaged 0.5 to 1kg a week of weight loss at a total of 10kg in 2 months.. I still got my soft belly but i intend to work it off in the next 3 months.

Try avoid 12-hour shifts/overtime work, if you can find the job. You should try to work for your pay, not die/fall ill for your pay.

Just eat an apple and an orange for the last meal of each day may help towards reducing weight.

Retire from work as soon as you can. Move into sports for life?

all excuses.....what ns, what no time after work...all excuses.

I can anytime prove that these are just excuses.

100% agree. Excuses can only make you a failure. I used to cycle to and back from work place. Also cycle among work places. Got 2009 1st Runners-up (1st sports competition in my life) and 1st in 2010 for a short distance cycling competition. Then invited to more challenging one in 2011 (challenge open-age cyclists or longer distance). I intend to semi-retire from work for the challenge.

Start with the food ........ How many tend to over eat during meal time until you have that filled and bloated feeling. In fact, most of the time, just eat enough not to feel hungry, especially for dinner. THere is some wisdom in the chinese saying of seventy percent full.
