NightWind 4th Gear June 4, 2011 Share June 4, 2011 Hi there i very bored with my 4 year old 47" Philips Full HD LCD.....its served me well so far but some how i still prefer Plasmas or LEDs. I remember a couple of years back Pioneer still sold the Kuros Plamsa line which was top of the line for luxury Plasmas and the picture quality was absolutely stunning. Does anyone know where I can still get one of these beauties? Too bad they discontinued the production...the Kuros was expensive (above $10k) but IMHO worth every penny. NightWind 4th Gear June 4, 2011 Author Share June 4, 2011 Thks I know Panasonic bought Pioneer but its not clear if Pioneer also sold the patented technology for the black to black Kuro crystals....and its also unlikely Panasonic incorporated the technology into their own TVs. In fact even today Cnet steal rate the Plasma Kuro TVs as a perfect 10 in terms of image qualifty...and no other panel receives that distinction..... Panhard 1st Gear June 4, 2011 Share June 4, 2011 is it true that led is more energy saving than plasma? my current plasma emits alot of heat from the screen when you stand near it --will the led really help me save on electric bills? --how different will the picture quality be compared with both? anyone can help answer these questions--Thks! Porker Turbocharged June 4, 2011 Share June 4, 2011 The Kuro series in Singapore are not as good as those offered overseas. I got my unit from UK about 3 years back. It's full HD and the picture quality is still unbeaten till now. Try online stores and have them shipped in. Hope you can still find them. For your info i am referrring to the high end 50" and above full HD plasmas.... I can try looking overseas but shipping is a big risk...i mean its a Plasma and they r notoriously fragile....i will trry to look for afew more weeks but if i cant find one then i will just look at Panasonic Plasma or a LED. Porker Turbocharged June 5, 2011 Share June 5, 2011 Singapore stores have HD ready units when I was shopping. The unit I bought was 60 inch full HD. Shipping is the least of the problem. Just get a freight forwarder to handle for you. Complete with insurance. LED displays are more energy efficient and produce less heat. But plasma units have better picture quality. I think the color reproduction is much much better as of now. Maybe LED tech will catch up in future. But I love my Pioneer unit as of now. Really very solid. And the black is really black. The only issue about getting a product that is no longer in production is warranty and parts replacement.. My only other grouse is that in the past 3 years the manufacturers have been adding novelty items like facebook, youtube, tweeter etc onto the smart TVs. Unfortunately for videophiles like u and me the focus has shifted away from picture quality to other frill items....which is still lacking on the old Kuro. However this is less of an issue for me as I also use a PS3 and can access interne via ps3.... any way thks alot for your comments. BTW I wrote in direct to Panasonic to c if they have any unsold units of the Kuro...lets keep fingers crossed... Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

Ixus 1st Gear June 5, 2011 Share June 5, 2011 Could be difficult to find a set now since Pioneer stopped producing the plasma like 2 years ago. I guess the closest you can get now is Panasonic plasma as they acquired the Kuro technology from Pioneer. But I'm not sure how the quality compares. I bought my 50" 8th gen Pioneer Kuro more than 3 years ago, still using it today and the picture quality is still top notch. I seldom watch Bluray, normally for watching cable and PS3 gaming. Vtim 3rd Gear June 5, 2011 Share June 5, 2011 (edited) For true black pictures, only Plasma can achieve that, LCD need a light source (backlight) or reflector to produce image. LCD usually uses cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFLs) and more recent models uses white LEDs as the light source. So, those LED TVs are indeed LCD panel, it's just different type of light source, LEDs are more power efficient as compare to Plasma. Why was Pioneer sending singapore the lower quality panels? Its less than S$10,000 for the set.
