Drivers in Singapore are reckless and impatient

SINGAPORE: A road safety survey released on Wednesday by insurance company, AXA, pins this irresponsible driving behaviour down to poor time management and lack of route planning.

The three dangerous behaviours committed most often are going through traffic lights which have turned amber, driving speed in excess of more than 10 kilometres above the speed limit and switching lanes without signalling.

Two in five drivers also admitted having answered the phone without a hands-free kit or text messaging while driving. They also confessed to tailgating.

AXA said these findings strongly indicate a rising trend of irresponsible driving behaviours and habits on the roads.

The survey polled over 600 car owners, taxi drivers, motorcyclists and heavy and light goods vehicle drivers.

i admit i use the horn almost everyday.

just yesterday, one guy turn out from small road never slow down,

i was on a 3 lane main road, (on lane 2)

he turned out so fast, if keeping in lane 3, i dun mind,

but becos for the fact he was fast, he swerve into my lane,

then i got to swerve into 1/4 of lane 1, (split second check for car, no, then swerve)

but if got motorcycle at the blind spot, i would have caused someone to be injured already.

heng, no accident,

Safe driving isn't just about slowing down, but also keeping out for others and don't assume they can see you even if you have the right of way, or assume they see you but are "KL".

Every driver in Singapore should go for defensive driving classes.

Most drivers dun believe in defensive driving, they only believe in who has the right of way. If I have the right of way, if u makan my right, den dun expect me not to horn u or slow down or give way etc. Juz my tot.

These are the properties of self-centeredness and self-righteousness that causes accidents. [laugh]

i believe these 2 points are the main reasons for speeding and tailgating..so who plans before their journey and set off earlier in anticipation of traffic jams?

jams can happen anytime.

even a time where there nomally isnt a jam, one accident changes everything.

in both directions.

Aiya...the usual SOP in Singapore. First release some reports and news.

Brainwash the minds I to believing it.

Then next week, increase the fees.

Very very obvious modus operandi.

I sometime cheong amber lite cos the car behind me follow so close...if I jam my brakes...I know I will make it....but will he make it ?

Who the hell dun exceed by 10kmh ?

Switch lane without signal...yes...only after I overtaken a persistant road hog.

No I dun answer the phone if I dun have my handfree kit. And no to texting...I agree...its totally dangerous.

Tailgating....hianz...when will this chicken or egg argument end ? Got hogger first then you will have tailgater.

Going through yellow light, above limit by 10km/h, no signal etc...these acts can hardly constitute "reckless" driving can they?!? This is everyday stuff for almost everyone I know who drives! In fact I've seen, and I'm pretty sure all of us have seen, much much worse. Reckless? Nah...just Singaporean...

i believe hogging of lanes cause jams..

when a person always tailgate expecting others to give way..then by constant personal justification everyone is a hogger..drive safe and within the speed limit
