Price difference between Stockist

I don't see how a recon alternator will fail faster than new.

Aside from installing a set of poor quality bearings, if the failure is due to worn out brushes or some electronic component defective and replaced, it will most likely function like new.

Also when you change your alternator, the workshop gets to keep it (if you do not insist to get it back) and get it repaired.

Then your alternator becomes recon later for sale to others.

Repairing alternator is cheap if you know where to go to. Usually the rate is below $100.

Comparing the price of new alternator at $900, that's a good margin to make.

Yesterday, my Jap car alternator broke down. Car suddenly experience loss of power and electric steering became heavy. Lucky was near my usual regular workshop. Mechanic told me alternator gone. Quoted me 8-900 for original Jap alternator, 600+ for taiwan OEM, 3-400 for recon set.

I decided to call the various stockists to check price for original Jap alternator for my Jap car model. Call three of them. 1st quoted S$580, 2nd quoted S$800 n 3rd quoted S$800 but no stock. I re-confirmed with the first and its definately original so I bought it from them.

The question, why the big difference in price 580 to 800 between the stockists??? I tot all of them should be ard the same price thereabouts???

So next time to check with different stockist.

All three made in Japan? YOM?

Not sure abt the cause of failure for mine. But the backend of the alternator all black when my mechanic removed it. The internal winding wires were also black unlike the new shiny copper wire from the new alternator.

I did went to the forum n saw that one of the workshop does recon alternator, Ah Heng at Blk13 Defu Lane 10. But I called and called the number for two hours, nobody picked up. I read that it cost something like S$350 for me to fix it. Somemore I scared to drive my car from my mechanic workshop to Defu, if stall halfway, will cause traffic jam n lots of drivers will be cursing me!!!

I agree with getting new one. alternator has no specified life span, unlike tyres or batt. You never know when an alternator will fail. it may fail today or next week.

and also the decision depends on whether you are going to keep the ride or not. if you wan to keep the ride until Judgement Day, then get a new one lah......

Recon cost how much??? $350? compared to new one $600. i go for $600 one...........

Yup, checked, same country of manufacture, Japan. It is made by Denso with exact name plate as my original alternator in my car.

The price difference of 220 is really shocking to me.

Since u hv ady bought e item, maybe u can just casually asked them why other stockists r selling much more expensive for e same item. I'm sure they'll more or less tell u the reason n we can roughly know how these stockists price their items, provided he's telling the truth though....

I see.

I note that some OEM parts are manufactured in different countries, apart from the country where the car was first manufactured. And the prices were different.

Because recon sets are normally pre-determined to fail. [laugh]

From what I understand, they will 'recon' the set to a bare minimum required for operation without replacing worn out parts, only faulty parts so they can re-con you in the near future.

Two of the three were the ones quoted me S$800 for the alternator. I got the 580 alternator from Fong Tat. Surprising rite.

Yup, OEM ones are cheaper than original.

Generally cheaper, but sometimes comparable or more ex.

And some OEMs have solutions that manufacturers don't(or cannot alter due to large stockpiles).

And some better quality/build.

Sometimes [shakehead] at manufacturer.

That is why I prefer original or genuine parts.
