Save your $$$, and buy a long CAT5e/6 cable and some PVC trunking -- <$20. Position your wifi router in the hallway, then both rooms enjoy wireless surfing. Save electricity, and save the environment. If its ADSL router, just tap into the phone wiring outside your rooms - if you know where it runs through.

 

It sounds like your problem is more to do with concrete walls and steel beams than distance as some bro mentioned.. without concrete walls (which is common in Singapore), you can go way beyond the boundaries of your house. Benefits of high gain antenna will be limited as signals do not pass through concrete and steel.

 

If you have dry walls and your rooms are far apart then it's a different issue.

 

If your house has so many walls, there is no way to position your router optimally, then powerline or Cat5e/6 wiring is your other options.

 

dont think will go for the 2 router way, its the kind of stupid idea only a burger can come out with..... [laugh]

i dont usually go town and hate buying from challennnnnnnnngeeeeerrrrr as i find their goods very ex, unless this gadget price is not too far off, say from SLS..

But another question.. my 2wire is in my study, and I got another comp in another room which is about 5m away. When close both room doors, the signal is hopeless.

 

In this scenario, am I better off getting a new WLAN access point , to be placed in the hallway, ... or a simple change of the ADSL/WLAN integrated modem wil do?

 

simple change of the ADSL/WLAN integrated modem will do. Look for those with high gain antennas.

You need a pair, one to the router an the other wifi one in your room, you will still detect two wifi network, but it will auto select the stronger one if you walk from one room to another.

 

But it mean you need two spare power socket which many house usually quite do not have [:(] I think if plug into an extension, the network speed is compromised. I would just change the router with stronger antenna.

 

Actually if you just put the single device next to your router, connect the LAN to it, turn off your router's wireless, and just use the Aztech wireless N Signal, believe is good enough, being its Wireless N. Signal will be better. In this case, you will have only 1 SSID to connect to.

relocating the router is not an option as it stays where the desktop is.

I have a (admittedly a bit of a crackpot) friend who quotes studies saying kindergartens had children performing worse academically when they went wireless. [:/]

 

But my friend has also sworn off microwave ovens, so...[laugh]

It's not a direct connection, you're going through the Powerline adapter. If anything (unlikely) the adapter will go first. In any case, it can't be any more dangerous than plugging your PC, router, etc. into mains power (which you do anyway).

 

Security is also another concern as you are now on the powergrid, which is all hooked up, you won't know when your connection may be hijacked by another Homeplug device located elsewhere. So far there's no incidents to date, you can't be sure when the hackers will come out with a way to attack these devices.

 

Powerline adapters have encryption which will frustrate eavesdroppers, even if the signal degradation beyreond the house does not.

 

Unless anyone has the schematic design for the Homeplug, I still have some reservations about using it. Just like in the past, a traditional modem can be zapped by lightning during usage in a thunderstorm. There is definitely a component to interface between the 220V line and the ethernet port. In any case if this component fails (depending on the failure mode), the full 220V will definitely zap into the ethernet port. And yes, the adapter will fail. What I meant was your device's (laptop) ethernet port will probably bear the full blunt of the 220V coming in for a few seconds before it eventually burns up.

 

For encryption wise, how many bits is the encryption key?

I'm not trying to brush off the product, but there are certain risks that requires further understanding before I'll fully consider using it. Back in the old days a few of my modems got zapped by lightning with 1 strike damaging my motherboard.

Your other wireless device must be able to support Wireless N, if not it'll still fallback to wireless G.

Wireless G is operating at the 2.4GHz frequency while N is on the 5GHz, that is why Wireless N sighnal is better. Moreover, the penetration rate for Wireless N is not that high now, so there's still not much congestion in that frequency.

If I'm not wrong, the popular IPhone 4S's wifi should be still of the G standard.

Most of DX stuffs are Made In China, but do check on the warrenty and manufacturer support (eg, firmware upgrades).

going by what you said, any electrical appliance stands an equal chance of being fried not just networking products. Unless you install a surge protection.

Misconception. 802.11n draft n (150Mbps) and 802.11n draft 2.0 (300Mbps) both operates on the 2.4Ghz standard as well. Only the wireless N products that are rated to be dual band operate both in the 2.4GHz and 5Ghz spectrum.

I doubt it will affect the PC/laptop if the power socket fried, as the connect can be wifi or through LAN cable.

 

However, there is still chance of the network been tapped, I read only if the neighbor power share the same power board, and provided someone bother to go around. Looking to hacked into neighbor network.

A good router not so expensive, I got 2 pieces of cheap MIC USB n adapter online , poor reception.

A: All our HomePlug devices have lightning protection built-in. It will only cause the internal board of the HomePlug device to short circuit. However, it will not damage your computer or anything plugged into it.

 

You can choose whether you wish to accept that sort of reassurance, but at the end of the day, I don't think the Homeplug is going to be significantly less robust than a normal wired router against a massive electrical surge. No electrical isolation is absolute, and remember high voltage can be easily carried along CAT 5e or 6 cable. I guess WiFi has the edge here - even if the router is fried dead meat, the wireless radio signal isolates the client devices almost perfectly.

The newer Homeplug AV apparently uses 128 bit AES. Industry standard, and quite secure.

 

At the end of the day, nothing is really that secure. Even if you swear off WiFi and Homeplug and wire your whole house with cable, I could be outside your house picking up the electromagnetic signals from your monitor and keyboard. It's just a matter of how committed I am and how valuable a target you are to justify my time and effort.

 

At the moment, the risk from wardrivers latching onto your WiFi (despite WPA2/PSK) is still more significant than people tapping into your power line to eavesdrop.

Sure, but as I said nothing is 100% safe or 100% secure.

most of my car cam, bicycle led lights, hdmi cable are from DX.... :D

homeplugs are stable in speed when not raining.

 

when it rains, speeds damn bad.

 

but latency for homeplugs damn high.

 

i did a latency test on speedtest.net and got 100+ms.

Another fact. ADSL broadband is affected by inclement weather as well. Reason being, the charge buildup in the atmosphere prior to rain is sufficient to affect performance of the DSLAM located on ground cabinets.
