Down to greed isn't it .... both of them would have a "decent" lifestyle with their pay ... not a porsche or lambo but a low end Merc/BMW should be within reach. They had a choice, take the risk and got caught at the end. They have noone to blame but themselves and their greed.

 

As the saying goes .... you can do anything but don't get caught. IMO, the family has to be blamed as well ... if one of my family member start to spend like one of them, I would question them.

22 years = 16.5 years only lah after deducting public holidays, annual leaves, child care leaves, compassionate leaves, etc

CASE BACKGROUND:

Dun understand how come the taxman knows nothing of it. Oh yeah, must be busy catching curry puff makers and GPs but have lots of faith in civil servants and not check on them at all.

 

 

They concentrate on catching self-employed career like insurance broker, estate agents, hawker, taxi-driver/s etc, turn a blind eyes on civil servant, likely places to commit crimes are all inside job by high ranking officer who abuse their position.

the internal audit and this guy's immediate boss must have been sleeping for the past 12 years......... his trick wasnt that complex or sophisticated to escape any decent survilence or audit.............. those who slept need to have their bonuses / pension reviewed and 'adjusted'. Best they go home sleep forever and no need to report to work anymore.

u know they are not subj to yearly audits by the auditor general, so its jus external audit. for the layman, external audit focus is not on discovering fraud. and why not yearly audit by AG, i thk some one questioned tat before.

SINGAPORE: Two former Singapore Land Authority (SLA) employees were sentenced to imprisonment on Friday.

 

41-year-old James Koh Seah Wee was sentenced to a total of 22 years jail for both cheating and money laundering.

 

His accomplice, 38-year-old Christopher Lim Chai Meng, was sentenced to 15 years jail, also for cheating and money laundering.

 

The former SLA employees had pleaded guilty to pilfering S$12.5 million from government coffers.

 

Justice Tay Yong Kwang told the court that offences involving public funds committed against public institutions have to be dealt with sternly as they undermine good administration.

 

He said financial crimes like these often have repercussions beyond immediate facts of the case. He added that new and more stringent checks may also have to be introduced to try to prevent a repeat of such cheating.

 

Justice Tay also called both Koh and Lim's purchase of super fast cars, like the Lamborghini and Ferrari, "egoistic acts". He said they were carelessly inviting questions about their new-found wealth and were hardly "sophisticated money launderers".

 

Lawyers representing Koh and Lim said the sentences were fair.

what if the properties this guy bought with the 'stolen' money are now able to fetch more than what he stole? Will the 'extra' goes to the govt? or shared between him and govt?

 

its like i had stolen 200k from you last year and spent it all on buying a car, then i was caught last year and i quickly sold the car for 230k (due to higher COE prices), return the 200 plus interest, can i pocket the balance? if the court/govt sold it for 230k, what will happen to the balance?
