Baphomet 3rd Gear November 15, 2011 Share November 15, 2011 I'm not sure about average annual rainfall, but recently a prof from NUS said that maximum rainfall intensities in Singapore have increased over the last 30 years. I dunno what's the impact of climate change on this, but i'm sure climate change has some role to play in our changing weather patterns. yeah..i also think so. its like u take a 1 litre container and put a hole at the bottom. Then you pour slowly 2 litre of water, the water will not overflow, as the water will have time to drain out from the hole. But if you pour faster, the water will overflow.. Although its still 2 litre of water, outcome is very different.. IMHO ...what the gahment can do now is to put more "holes"..however this will take time. Do you have information on how rainfall has changed in neighboring JB as well. For example, we should have more reports of flooding in JB like Singapore as well. For example, if weather change here in SG from 5 years ago, JB should also change from 5 years ago and flooding should be worse from 5 years ago. The amount of change should be simliar. Maybe in case the water level sensors in the canal fail, the CCTVs provide a fall back mechanism. Other than that, does not help much other than to show someone is doing something. Please have realistic expectations? they are human..not god... Cannot really blame them for this. They are trying to rectify this problem. So lets wait and see.. Raining for a few hours = climate change? We're not even seeing continuous rain for 48 hours or more. I remember 1-2 decades back in the monsoon season, it was raining for days non stop. Now I see "climate change" in another way, there is less rain (been a long time since it rained continuously for a few days non stop). If our smarter than nature MIW claims it's climate change, then who does it flood only when it is raining? If it is indeed due to climate change, then even without rain, we would have been hit by flash floods. I think rainfall intensity is more relevant in Singapore's case, not duration of rainfall nor mean/total of rainfall per month. It is pretty common to rain for many days continuously and even for weeks in other countries. Singapore's rainfall for several hours causes flash floods due to their shorter durations but higher intensities. I say that they are tracing the source of the water and once they have found out the sovereign country, GPS tracking of waters passing through SG should yield a nice chunk of GDP. For example, we should have more reports of flooding in JB like Singapore as well. I have not come across rainfall studies for JB. But what I know is that there are a number of explanations for changing rainfall patterns. One explanation which could be more applicable to Singapore rather than JB is urbanisation, which has been quite extensive in Singapore over the past few decades. Urbanisation could result in something known as the urban heat effect, which affects temperature and subsequently the amount of moisture in the air. The thing is I don't think there are sufficient studies to show whether the rainfall changes that we have experienced are due to climate change or other effects. Singapore's rainfall for several hours causes flash floods due to their shorter durations but higher intensities. Agree it's the rainfall intensity rather than total rainfall that causes floods. Like the last report case where the stomper film the whole process and it took few minutes for water to rise and overflow the river banks and by 20 minutes later, water receeded.
