  3. Verdick is out Doctor gets 10 years’ jail for sexually assaulting patient in Bedok clinic Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/doctor-sexually-assaulted-patient-wee-teong-boo-jailed-11294522 SINGAPORE: A doctor convicted of sexually assaulting his patient was on Wednesday (Feb 27) sentenced to 10 years' jail. He was also ordered to pay the victim S$1,200 in compensation for the counselling fees she incurred to deal with the psychological and emotional effects from the assault, which took place in 2015 in his Bedok clinic. Wee Teong Boo, 68, was found guilty on Monday of one charge of outrage of modesty and another charge of sexual assault by digital penetration. He was acquitted of the original rape charge. Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz on Wednesday asked for a sentence of 12 years and seven months’ jail. Of this, three months was in lieu of seven strokes of the cane, as Wee is above the age of 50 and cannot be caned. She said “medicine has long been regarded as the most noble of professions”, but Wee’s “senseless actions” violated its ethics and code, “forever shattering” the victim’s life. “Forty-two years after entering a profession committed to the primacy of patient welfare, Wee Teong Boo stands before this court, convicted of sexual assaulting and molesting a young female patient during two medical examinations - his senseless actions violating the very ethical mores that every doctor swears to uphold,” said the prosecutor. Advertisement Wee has indicated his intent to appeal against the conviction and sentence. GIVING TESTIMONY WAS LIKE BEING RAPED AGAIN: VICTIM The prosecutor reminded the judge of the victim’s testimony during the trial, which the victim had likened to being “raped again”. The woman, aged 23 when the assault took place, had told the court that after the incident, she “was living like a walking dead, walking as per normal, but I was just dead inside”. She also wondered why it happened to her, “out of so many patients”. “What are the odds of being raped when you visit a medical professional in Singapore, in such a safe country? I cannot register why I am the one, I just can’t understand why it happened to me,” the prosecutor recalled the victim saying. The incident affected her classes and "destroyed her trust in male doctors". The victim later requested only for female doctors whenever she visited a polyclinic. She also had trouble with her male friends, unable to accept any intimacy. Wee was acquitted of the rape charge as the judge said he was satisfied that there was reasonable doubt as to whether penile penetration could have taken place. On Wednesday, the prosecutor said Wee had been "utterly disgraceful" in court, in particular retorting during cross-examination: "I do not consider her (the patient) a victim." "This barbed taunt smacks of arrogance and pure defiance and ... lack of remorse," said the prosecutor. She also said that Wee maligned the integrity and character of independent witnesses during the trial, claiming that a doctor on the stand was not giving objective evidence and instead was embellishing it to suit the prosecution's case. He also maligned police officers, calling them "stupid" and "blatantly lying about ill treatment while in custody", said the prosecution. Wee’s defence counsel Edmond Pereira said he will not be making submissions on sentence as his client is maintaining his innocence. He pointed to Wee's history of medical conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, and pointed out that there was no need for the prosecution to increase an "already lengthy" jail term as Wee will be in his late 70s by the time he is released from prison. He also tried contesting the compensation order relating to the victim's counselling fees, saying there was no evidence in court about the counselling when the victim testified. Wee is out on bail pending his appeal. Read more at https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/doctor-sexually-assaulted-patient-wee-teong-boo-jailed-11294522

  5. Today I went back to this hawker stall in Whampoa market which I ate since I was a child more than 20 years back. It really brought back memories and it still taste as nice. I just wanted to share the stall and am wondering if anyone else know about similar stalls that has been selling for a long long time and still taste as good. The stall I am talking about is the Curry Rice Stall in whampoa Market. I think they only sell for breakfast only... the braised pork there is REALLY good. Quite easy to see as there is always a queue. No newspaper cuttings though. IT still taste the same since my parents brought back for me 20 years back.... It is REALLY HARD to find the same stall selling the SAME food for 20 years. And still taste the same. Almost all my favourite childhood stalls have closed down or moved.... The only other one I know still at the same place is a Malay food stall in a Coffee shop in TPY.
  6. 'American Idol' alum Antonella Barba pleads guilty, faces 10 years to life https://www.msn.com/en-sg/news/world/american-idol-alum-antonella-barba-pleads-guilty-faces-10-years-to-life/ar-AAF8aT7?ocid=ientp_edu NORFOLK, Virginia – Antonella Barba, formerly of "American Idol" and "Fear Factor" fame, likely will spend at least a decade behind bars after pleading guilty to possession of at least 400 grams of fentanyl with intent to distribute in federal court in Virginia on Tuesday. The guilty plea carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, according to a plea agreement filed in federal court. She could face a possible life sentence and up to $10 million in fines, as well as asset forfeiture, according to the agreement. The 32-year-old singer, who grew up on the Jersey Shore, was first arrested on Duke Street in Norfolk in October 2018. She originally was charged with selling or intending to sell 100 grams or more of heroin, according to Virginia court records. She denied the initial charges. Those state charges were later supplanted by federal charges of possession with intent and conspiracy, according to court records. According to a statement of facts filed in connection with the plea agreement, investigators had been tracking Justin Michael "Cali" Isaac of California, believing he "was a source for kilogram quantities of cocaine and heroin." On Oct. 11, 2018, they determined he was heading to a "stash" apartment in Norfolk from Washington, D.C., but then listened in on a phone call in which Isaac said he was sending a woman to deliver drugs, according to the statement. Investigators staking out the apartment found Barba there in a car, a shoebox of fentanyl on the floor, according to the statement. Isaac and several other defendants also were named in the same federal indictment as Barba. Barba was one of the top 16 contestants on the singing competition's sixth season in 2007before she was eliminated. She also appeared on "Fear Factor" in 2012. Barba had been confined to a family home in Point Pleasant under court order. It was unclear if she remains there or had been taken into custody following her plea. Barba's attorney, James Broccoletti, declined to comment. pls help to delete this post, dont knwo why double posting, thanks Mod

  8. Hi all, Just would like to share my experiences during the renewal of my Honda Civic. History: My car is the Honda Civic 1.6AT, originally registered in 16 Apr 2009. I bought the car from a Direct seller through sgcarmart at 16.5k (min PARF is 12.5k) in Nov 2018, means I had approximate 6 months to drive the car to inspect its status before making decision to renew the COE or not. Road tax was paid until 15 Apr 2019, so it is another convenient point for me. The mileage of the car when I took over was 87000 km (genuine mileage) and I was the 4th owner of the car. The purchasing was pretty smooth, I paid full amount in cash and we completed the ownership transfer at LTA on the same day. STA evaluation: The Direct seller on his good will sent the car to STA for evaluation and bear the cost for it. The STA report showed there are only a few minor points with the car, inclusive the worn out tires, worn lower arm-buish, non-retractable left-side mirror and minor seepage of oil. As all of those issues are wear and tears items, I decided to move on and took the car. Driving experience and maitenance: Handling of the car is good, during the 6 months driving it never gave me any problems. Quite happy with my car, so in March I sent my car for regular servicing and also for comprehensive checking at a workshop to intensive evaluate the car for COE renewal. All wear and tears part needed to be changed include 4 tires (Michelin Primacy 4), lower arm buishes and fix the non-retractable mirror only (over-all cost me less than 1k). The oil seepage was not detected at this servicing time and the mechanics told me they would check it at next time servicing. After that my car was ready for COE renewal. COE renewal: I bought the car in Nov 2018, when the PQP for COE reneal was $29760. The PQP was steadily decrease in the months after that and it reached the lowest $25525 in March, before slight increase in Apr. When I logged in the LTA onemotoring portal, I got the option to choose Mar or Apr PQP. If I chose Mar PQP, then my new COE wil be from 1st Apr 2019 to 31rd Mar 2029. If I chose Apr PQP, then my new COE will be from 16th Apr 2019 to 15th Apr 2029. Due to only 15 days is forfeited, I have decided to renew the 10 years COE using March PQP. The payment is also pretty convenient via online bank-payment. I also realized that the PARF rebate is still valid until 15 Apr 2019 even though I have renewed the COE, means I can still de-register the car and get back that min PARF. Road tax renewal: Now there is a small problem for me. My insurance with AXA is till 20 Nov 2019, so I only got an option to renew the road tax for 6 month from 16th Apr 2019 to 15th Oct 2019 (at $407). I think I will need to discuss with the insurance company to extend my current contract till 15th Apr 2020 so I can align the road tax with the insurance, but surely there is a mismatch in the expiry dates for road tax and the new COE. Thinking: I am now thinking whether should I repaint the whole car or not. The color of my car is brown and there are quite a number of small scratches there, but it is not clearly visible. I asked around and the cost is likely to be in 1-1.5k, so still thinking about it. And since the headlights are quite yellowish (although tried to polish and restore but still a bit foggy), I have also bought a pair of headlights at price of $119 each. Will install this brand new headlights after I repaint the car.
  9. Couldn't find this on MCF. If it's been posted before, my deepest apologies. http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...s-time-20130811 On Aug 22, 2012, I received a thank-you card from a Singaporean by the name of James Ow-Yeong Keen Hoy. From his elegant, cursive handwriting, I guess he must at least be in his 50s. Young people these days prefer to type, and when they do write, they simply do not write as beautifully. He wrote: "My family is deeply grateful and has benefited from your magnificent leadership and solid contributions that have enabled our nation to achieve peace, happiness, progress, prosperity, solidarity and security all these good years. A big thank you! "May we have the honour to sincerely wish you, Sir, peace and joy, wisdom and longevity and all the very best in the coming good years. And may our beloved country be blissfully and richly blessed and be mercifully safeguarded now and always. God bless." I quote at length from this card to highlight the enormity of the mindset shift, from an older generation, including this writer, his peers and his seniors, to a younger one that takes for granted Singapore's affluence. People like Mr Ow-Yeong have seen Singapore develop from the unsettling 1960s, when hardship and poverty were still the rule rather than the exception, to today's vibrant and cosmopolitan Singapore, providing well-paying jobs to a highly educated population. Many older Singaporeans also progressed from living in shanty huts to high-rise apartments with present-day conveniences and surrounded by safe neighbourhoods. They have a good understanding of the nation's imperatives - what it took for us to get here and what it would take to keep up our success - as well as its vulnerabilities. The younger voters do not share those views. Having been born into a Singapore that had in many ways already arrived, they see all that is around them - a working system generating stability and wealth - and they ask: "Where is the miracle?"... Even as things stand, we have regretfully shifted the system away from attracting the best talent through reductions to ministerial pay. If I were a Cabinet minister at the time the change came up for discussion, I would have stood firm. But the younger generation of ministers decided to go with the trend. It is true that no country in the world pays ministers as we do. But it is also true that no other island has developed like Singapore: sparkling, clean, safe, with no corruption and low crime rates. You can walk the streets or jog at night. Women will not be mugged. Police do not take bribes, and if they are offered bribes, there are consequences for the ones offering. None of this came about by coincidence. It took the construction of an ecosystem that requires highly paid ministers. With every pay reduction, the sacrifice that a minister makes - giving up his profession or his banking job - becomes greater. Some will eventually tell themselves: "I don't mind doing this for half a term, 21/2 years, as a form of national service. But beyond that, it has to be: thanks but no thanks." The final outcome would be a revolving-door government, which will inevitably lack a deep understanding of the issues or the incentive to think about problems in a long-term manner. Will Singapore be around in 100 years? I am not so sure. America, China, Britain, Australia - these countries will be around in 100 years. But Singapore was never a nation until recently. An earlier generation of Singaporeans had to build this place from scratch - and what a fine job we have done. When I led the country, I did what I could to consolidate our gains. So too did Goh Chok Tong. And now, under Lee Hsien Loong and his team, the country will do well for at least the next 10 to 15 years. But after that, the trajectory that we take will depend on the choices made by a younger generation of Singaporeans. Whatever those choices are, I am absolutely sure that if Singapore gets a dumb government, we are done for. This country will sink into nothingness.
  10. New rules set to be laid down next month stipulate that private-hire vehicle drivers must be Singapore citizens who are at least 30 years old. This comes amidst discussions between the National Taxi Association and National Private Hire Vehicles Associations. One of the key concerns prompting the proposed rule is the problem of youths taking to driving private-hire vehicles full-time. As of February 2019, there are 41,000 registered PHV drivers, of which 40 percent of them are under 40 years old. Over 6500 of them are below 30 years old. However, the data does not include non-registered PHV drivers who operate “hitch” services. Hitch drivers are allowed to only make 2 ride-sharing trips a day, however many are known to take on more rides across different ride-sharing operators. The NTA and NPHV are also in discussion about issues such as contracts between transport operators and drivers, drivers’ insurance and the issue of whether PHV can do roadside pick-ups. The result of these talks will be announced next month. Article from redwiretimes. No official news. Looks dubious. But been trending around some dealer websites also. If really true how many will be affected?
  11. The First New Lotus in 11 Years Will Be Unveiled next MonthSources: https://jalopnik.com/the-first-new-lotus-in-11-years-will-be-unveiled-next-m-1835172228 The 71-year-old British sports car maker has a new electric hypercar coming next month. We already know that it is called the Type 130, as it was made official at the Shanghai Auto Show a couple of months ago. When the new car is unveiled on July 16th, it will become the first new car Lotus has produced since the Evora was launched in 2008. Thus marks the rapid development that has been possible under Geely ownership and an influx of capital. The new Lotus EV has been confirmed for production at the Lotus facility in Hethel, where the company has been based since 1966. Just 130 examples of the so-called hypercar will be built, though we don’t yet know what it looks like or how much it will cost or how fast it is. I am personally a fan of Lotus founder Colin Chapman’s lightweight and simplicity ethos. This has made for some exquisite Lotus models over the decades, and for a long time it lead to ultimate success in motorsports. While the company has certainly waned from the international powerhouse it once was, the current range of products, while ancient, are still quite good. I am confident that the Lotus engineers are capable and can still make a quality sports car with excellent handling characteristics. This Type 130 should be an interesting motor car. Hopefully with the EV engineering Williams have learned supplying Formula E with batteries, and the influx of actual money from the Chinese, Lotus can regain some of its former glory. The Lotus Type 130 will be unveiled in London on July 16th. Production is said to take place shortly thereafter with deliveries beginning in 2020. Lotus has produced chassis for electrification before, as it supplied Elise to an early Tesla for the original Roadster.
  12. Coe has been on hovering 70k plus and nobody know when it will drop and new car and used car (2L and above) price is still very expensive to certain people even for 2L and below for those who currently own a car now and the coe going to expire soon and caught in the middle of buying new or used car but if the currently own car (2L and above) is in good condition and have been service regularly, will be make sense to renew it if just paying 70k plus for the next 10 years as the new/ used car depreciation is above 10k and above for a 2L car

  16. Toyota 4Runner Turns 35-Years-Old With Special Editionhttps://carbuzz.com/news/toyota-4runner-turns-35-years-old-with-special-edition Yes, the 4Runner has been around for three and a half decades now. The year was 1984 when Toyota launched the original 4Runner SUV, and over the past 35 years the rough and tough off-roader has proven itself time and again. Thirty-five consecutive model years is a long time for any vehicle, but given the fact that the 4Runner appeals to a more specific group of buyers speaks volumes. To celebrate its three and a half decades, Toyota unveiled the new 4Runner Nightshade Special Edition last month, available exclusively on the Limited trim. This special edition package tacks on 20-inch black wheels, black bumpers and grille accents, and black interior trim throughout, such as on the steering wheel, center cluster, console panels, and shifter. And that’s about it, really. A black theme throughout, hence the name ‘Nightshade.’ Regardless of whether or not one buys this special edition or any other trim, all 2019 Toyota 4Runners come powered by a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 hp and 278 lb-ft of torque paired to a five-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift mode. If this powertrain setup sounds kind of ancient, well, that’s because it is. A naturally aspirated V6 linked to a five-speed slushbox is old school, and that’s why we love the body-on-frame 4Runner. It’s a true SUV. All 4Runner trims also have a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. If you opt for the standard 2WD 4Runner, you’ll also benefit from the standard automatic limited slip differential, a system that allows some wheel slippage to help the vehicle escape from deep snow or sand. The optional part-time 4WD system features a two-speed transfer case with a selectable range. But if you want full-time 4WD, you’ll have to upgrade to the 4Runner Limited. This 4WD system utilizes a Torsen center differential with locking feature and a three-mode, center-console-mounted switch. There’s a 40:60 torque split most of the time, but this alters when the system detects and responds to slippage, switching to a 30:70 split. For now, it doesn’t appear that Toyota has plans to drop the 4Runner and we really hope that doesn’t change. If anything, a complete redesign may soon be in order considering the current fifth-generation has been roaming the trails and conquering rocks since 2009. 35 years of the 4Runner. 1st gen (N60) - 1984 to 1989 2nd gen (N120) - 1990 to 1995 3rd gen (N180) - 1996 to 2002 4th gen (N210) - 2002 to 2009 5th gen - 2009 to present

  19. Finally come to an end after more than 2 decades. Japan executes AUM doomsday cult founder Asahara, 6 members https://english.kyodonews.net/news/2018/07/2f080e7e4f87-bulletin-aum-founder-asahara-mastermind-behind-1995-sarin-gas-attack-executed.html AUM Shinrikyo cult founder Shoko Asahara, who was convicted of numerous murders including the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway system, was executed Friday along with six former senior members of the cult, the Justice Ministry said. Asahara, 63, whose real name was Chizuo Matsumoto, was sentenced to death more than a decade ago for masterminding the subway attack and other acts that resulted in the deaths of 29 people among a total of over 6,500 victims. He was among 13 people placed on death row in connection with the string of crimes perpetrated by the doomsday cult. The six others executed on the same day are Yoshihiro Inoue, 48, Tomomitsu Niimi, 54, Tomomasa Nakagawa, 55, Kiyohide Hayakawa, 68, Masami Tsuchiya, 53, and Seiichi Endo, 58. Asahara was executed at a Tokyo detention center, while the others were hanged at the same detention center as well as those in Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka. "Their death penalties had been finalized after sufficient deliberations at courts," Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa said at a press conference in the afternoon, adding that she made careful considerations before ordering the executions on Tuesday. Kamikawa, however, declined to comment on how the seven were selected among the death row inmates. In March, seven of the 13 AUM death row inmates were transferred from the Tokyo detention center to other facilities across the country, fanning speculation they could be executed anytime. Some of those transferred were not among the seven hanged Friday. Inoue, who was among the transferred seven, filed for a retrial at the time. Japan usually does not execute people who are seeking retrial. The move drew sharp criticism from some lawmakers as well as Amnesty International, which called capital punishment "the ultimate denial of human rights." Kamikawa said that capital punishment is "unavoidable" for such heinous crimes. The following are brief descriptions of three major criminal cases involving the AUM Shinrikyo doomsday cult. Tokyo subway sarin gas attack Under instructions from AUM leader Shoko Asahara, 15 senior members conspired to take plastic bags containing sarin liquid onto five Tokyo subway trains and release the poison by puncturing the bags with umbrellas, vaporizing the nerve agent, during the morning rush hour on March 20, 1995. The attack, one of Japan's worst terrorism incidents, killed 13 people and injured over 6,200. Matsumoto sarin attack Under instructions from Asahara, several AUM members released sarin gas from a vehicle mounted with a spraying device at a parking lot in a residential district of the city of Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, central Japan, on the night of June 27, 1994. The attack killed eight people and injured more than 100. Lawyer Sakamoto murder Under instructions from Asahara, six AUM members strangled 33-year-old lawyer Tsutsumi Sakamoto, who had been helping parents seeking to free their children from the cult's control, as well as his 29-year-old wife Satoko and their 1-year-old son Tatsuhiko, after sneaking into the family's home in Yokohama, near Tokyo, in the early hours of Nov. 4, 1989. Victims of AUM crimes and their families largely welcomed the move, which came decades after the crimes were committed due to prolonged trials. Some said Japan has now lost a chance to hear an account of the crimes from Matsumoto, who had stopped making meaningful speeches from the middle of his first trial, which started in April 1996. "The time has come. That was my only thought," said Shizue Takahashi, 71, who lost her then-50-year-old husband, the assistant stationmaster Kazumasa, in the Tokyo subway sarin attack, adding many others had been waiting for the day. "A third of my life has been affected by AUM. Thinking that makes me feel frustrated," Takahashi said. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said police have increased vigilance toward the cult's successor organization, Aleph, following the executions. "The police will take measures to be fully prepared," the top government spokesman said when asked by reporters about potential retaliation by people close to the cult. The Public Security Intelligence Agency on the same day inspected Aleph offices and other related sites nationwide. Asahara was arrested in May 1995, just under two months after the March 20 subway attack, which claimed the lives of 13 people and left more than 6,200 others injured. In a February 2004 ruling, the Tokyo District Court found Asahara guilty of all 13 charges and sentenced him to death, saying, "We cannot help saying that the motivation and purpose of the crimes were too outrageous and ridiculous, as he tried to control Japan in the name of salvation." Asahara was also convicted of masterminding a June 1994 sarin gas attack in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture, which killed eight people and injured more than 100. He was also convicted of the murders of lawyer Tsutsumi Sakamoto, who had been helping parents seeking to free their children of the cult's control, and his wife and their 1-year-old son in November 1989. The death sentence against him was finalized in 2006. After his arrest and the start of his trial in April 1996, Asahara began exhibiting baffling behavior in the courtroom and detention facilities, often remaining silent or just mumbling. His execution came as a slew of trials involving AUM members came to an end after more than 20 years with the Supreme Court's decision on Jan. 18 to reject an appeal against a life sentence filed by Katsuya Takahashi, the last former member on trial. Japan forgoes executing death row inmates if an accomplice is still on trial. Around 190 people were indicted for crimes involving AUM Shinrikyo, and Asahara's first trial alone took seven years and 10 months to complete at the Tokyo District Court. AUM evolved from a yoga school established by Asahara in 1984 and had about 1,400 live-in followers and over 10,000 lay followers at one point. It renamed itself Aleph in 2000 and two splinter groups have been formed, including one established by high-profile former member Fumihiro Joyu. Following reports of the executions, Joyu reiterated his apology to people affected by AUM but said he is no longer part of the original cult. "As I also bear a heavy responsibility, I would like to apologize to the victims," he said, although adding, "I have left Aleph more than 10 years ago, and I don't have any special feelings (for Asahara)." The Public Security Intelligence Agency continued to monitor the groups, believing they were still under the influence of Asahara. The followers of the three groups total about 1,650 in Japan and about 460 in Russia, while the groups hold more than 1 billion yen ($9 million) in assets, according to the agency. Asahara told his followers he is the incarnation of Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and regeneration, and urged them to entrust themselves and their assets to Shiva and himself for life, according to prosecutors who indicted him.
