  3. Everything also can cheat. It is not only bad for our environment, but our health too. 😷 Source: https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/emission-cheating-devices-installed-in-some-trucks-and-buses-in-singapore SINGAPORE - Some diesel trucks and buses in Singapore have been fitted with devices that override the systems meant to clean up their exhaust emissions, The Straits Times has learnt. Popularly known as "defeat devices", they are sold online and allow vehicles to bypass emission standards and, in doing so, spew out high levels of nitrogen oxide - a poisonous greenhouse gas. Vehicle owners can save thousands of dollars each year by skimping on the exhaust treatment solution, known as AdBlue, which removes nitrogen oxide from diesel vehicle's exhaust emissions. At least one local workshop was found to offer an "AdBlue removal service", in addition to freelance mechanics who install such devices for a fee. In response to queries, the National Environment Agency (NEA) said it does not regulate the use of such cheat devices. But the agency, which sets vehicle emission standards here, added that it takes a serious view of devices that may bypass teh control of pollutant emissions. NEA also said it will work with inspection centres to monitor the use of such devices and enhance its regulations where necessary. It is not known how prevalent such devices are in Singapore. They are illegal in most European countries. Based on data from the Land Transport Authority, there are 172,996 diesel-powered vehicles as at Aug 31. The majority of those that are eight years old or newer would require AdBlue to operate properly. Diesel engine emissions include nitrogen oxide. When diesel vehicle is running, AdBlue, which is stored in a separate tank, is automatically injected into the exhaust system to convert the harmful fumes into nitrogen and water before the gases leave the vehicle's tailpipe. AdBlue is used in many diesel trucks and buses on Singapore roads. Globally, the exhaust treatment fluid is widely adopted by vehicle manufacturers to meet tightening emission standards. Keeping the vehicle topped up with AdBlue costs around 4 per cent to 5 per cent of the amount spent on diesel fuel. Commercial vehicles that clock high mileage will need to refill AdBlue more frequently. The solution is available at petrol stations as well as specialised AdBlue sellers. For private cars that do not cover so many kilometers, the top-up is usually done as part of the annual service at workshops. The price of Adblue is influenced by the rising cost of natural gas, a key ingredients used in its production. Currently, Adblue costs between $1.70 per litre to over $2 a litre, up 30 per cent from prices in 2021. In addition to saving on AdBlue refills, the cheat device enables the vehicle to be driven, even if the emission-control system is broken. Breakdowns can be caused by poor maintenance or by using lubricants that are meant for older diesel vehicles, which are cheaper to buy but are not suitable for these engines. Fixing such control systems is expensive. Mr Chew Guan Do, 62, who manages a fleet of trucks, said the bill easily exceeds $2,000 when control systems on the tipper trucks fail. Diesel vehicles also seem to need such repair more frequently as they age, adding downtime on top of hefty bills. There are different types of cheat devices - but their main function is to hookwink the vehicle's sensors to think there is AdBlue in the system when there is none. The simplest version of such devices, which are available online for as little as $40, plugs directly into a vehicle's diagnostic port. This type of devices, which takes the vehicle's emission-cleaning system out of play, can be removed before regular inspections. Experts said the vehicle will function normally and pass the tests, if it is otherwise roadworthy. A freelance engine-tuning expert, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said he has programmed a truck's computer to bypass the emission control system and has not had any issues. Many of these hacks promise improved fuel efficiency and increase engine performance. With the added horsepower, the engine will produce even more poisonous exhaust gases.

JULY 31, 2022 PUBLISHED AT 4:31 PM By KWOK KAR PENG Shin Min Daily News He was shocked when he found out his newborn son had a different blood type from him and his wife. But when told by a doctor that it could happen, he didn't think too much of it. But the reality turned out to be much harsher — the 27-year-old man known as Lin recently found out that the baby, now 10 months old, isn't his biological child. This food delivery rider in Singapore told Shin Min Daily News yesterday (July 30) that in March this year, he found that his 29-year-old wife often left home early and returned only late at night. In May, he said that he also saw her hugging another man. The couple had been married for close to 10 years and have three children. At a relative's suggestion, Lin did a paternity test in June for his youngest son. The truth sent him reeling. During a fight, he said his wife admitted the boy isn't biologically his but her lover has "nothing to do" with it. The betrayal cut especially deep; Lin told the Chinese daily that he works 16 long hours a day, from 10am to 2am, to support the family. He earns $6,000 to $7,000 a month and gives most of it, about $5,000, to his wife, keeping the remaining amount for food, petrol costs, cigarettes and the occasional lottery ticket. He said that he has bought a property and employed a maid for the family. Last year, he said he paid about $80,000 for a second-hand seven-seater vehicle so that it's easier for his wife to send the children to school. He added: "My wife works in accounts. She's in charge of the expenses at home as well as the housing and car loan repayments. I love and trust her a lot. I give her all my money and hardly have any savings." Maid told him about affair Lin told Shin Min he travelled overseas last month to handle some matters and received a message from his maid informing him that an unfamiliar man was spending the night at their home. She also took a photo of the man, adding she had informed his wife's mother. Lin later called his mother-in-law, who confirmed that she had met the other man but didn't have the heart to tell Lin about it. Lin's wife said that she now wants a divorce and wants their marital home as well as custody of the three children. But despite all that has happened, he hopes that she can return to him. He said: "She complained to me before that I was always working and didn't spend time with her and that it was like not having a husband at all. But we have three children and a housing loan. I told her I want to give her and the kids a good life. I thought she would understand. However, things turned out like this." When he asked her why she wants to leave, she reportedly told him they don't communicate anymore. Lin added, despite finding out his youngest child isn't his biologically, he still loves his son a lot. "In the last month, my wife didn't really take care of him. I would be the one cradling him, feeding him milk and soothing him in the middle of the night. That's why our bond is especially strong. If my wife insists on leaving, I'm willing to raise the three children."
  5. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/courts-crime/car-dealership-manager-admits-to-cheating-buyers-of-over-222000-in-deposits SINGAPORE - A manager of a car dealership lied to sellers that he would pay their outstanding car loans so that he could buy their vehicles with a smaller outlay. He then cheated buyers of these used cars into paying him more than $222,000 in deposits, knowing full well that ownership could not be transferred because of the unpaid loans. Ng Leeson, 45, pleaded guilty to six counts of cheating and one of criminal breach of trust as an agent on Tuesday (Oct 5). The court heard that he was a manager at B Leasing, a company that bought and sold second-hand cars. He had oversight of the day-to-day operations. Between January and March 2015, Ng conspired with his colleague Chong Zhuang Jian, a 36-year-old salesman, to carry out the scheme. Chong was promised a commission of about $300 for each car he purchased and $500 for each sale. The pair sourced for cars with outstanding loans on motoring portal sgCarMart. They would offer to pay the seller's outstanding loan to the bank directly and thus obtain the car for a smaller sum. For instance, if the agreed sale price was $100,000 and the outstanding loan was $99,000, they would offer $1,000. Ng then advertised these cars for sale on the same portal at attractive prices and deceived buyers into thinking that they would be the registered owners after they had paid deposits. When sellers and buyers sensed that something was amiss and tried to reach the pair, they were not contactable. The duo purchased nine cars and sold seven of them between January and March 2015. On top of his managerial role at B Leasing, Ng was also the sole owner of Leeson Motors, a company that bought and sold used cars. His offences came to light when a seller lodged a police report against Leeson Motors in July 2015 because Ng failed to pay her over $41,000 for her car. A search on the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority website showed that Leeson Motors is no longer in operation. No results were yielded for car dealerships with the name B Leasing. Ng is due to be sentenced on Oct 20. Chong had been sentenced to two years and three months' jail in February 2019 for his offences. No restitution has been made to the victims. For each count of cheating, Ng could be jailed up to 10 years and fined. The maximum penalty for criminal breach of trust as an agent carries a jail term of 20 years and a fine.

  8. The Straits Times www.straitstimes.comPublished on Sep 05, 2012 Accountant allegedly misused $16.5m of firms' funds By leonard lim An accountant hired by five companies linked to global computer giant Hewlett-Packard is alleged to have misappropriated $16.5 million of their funds. The firms - which had engaged Mr Ewe Pang Kooi to take them through a liquidation process - successfully applied to the High Court for an injunction last month to freeze his assets up to that figure. An employee of HP here also lodged a report with the Commercial Affairs Department in late July and investigations are believed to be ongoing. A police spokesman said yesterday it was inappropriate to comment. It is understood that no criminal charges have been filed against the 59-year-old Mr Ewe. The Malaysian, a permanent resident here, declined comment yesterday but confirmed that he was out on bail. The $16.5 million figure, if eventually proven, will be higher than the David Rasif and Singapore Land Authority (SLA) cheating cases. The cases involving the rogue lawyer and two SLA executives involved about $11 million and $12 million respectively. The five HP-linked firms - 3Com South Asia, 3Par Singapore, Compaq Asia, Mercury Interactive (Singapore) and Compaq Computer Asia - had all engaged Mr Ewe, well-known for providing insolvency services in industry circles, as their sole liquidator on separate occasions between June 2009 and November 2011. The companies were dormant at the respective times. [email protected] Copyright
  9. Reality is far from expectations for these Stompers who bought items online Sometimes, online shopping can be like a game of Russian roulette. You can hope that you get what you pay for but once in a while, the reality may be far off from your expectations. Unfortunately, two Stompers got way less than they bargained for when they decided to purchase products online via Facebook. Stomper Eve was excited when she was scrolling through Facebook and came across a portable projector that she thought would be the perfect Christmas gift for her son. She clicked on a sponsored ad that appeared on her feed that was posted by a page called Fashion Products. The ad redirected her to a website called yibeibuy.com. "I was surprised that there was an option to pay in cash on delivery so I ordered one for $69 on Tuesday (Dec 11)," she said. "The item came the very next day (Dec 12) and I paid when the delivery arrived. "Although it was meant to be a present, I decided to open it and charge the projector for my son. "It was black like what I had ordered online but when I looked closer it turned out to be a speaker with instructions in Chinese, like the ones you can get at a pasar malam for like $25." Eve told Stomp that she messaged Fashion Products on Facebook and was asked to provide a tracking number and details. However, she said that she was not given any. "They didn't even give me an email confirmation when I placed my order. "The person I was communicating with then said it was their page but not their link when I sent her screenshots taken from Facebook Marketplace."

  11. On 07-July, we purchased a 2006 Audi A6 (Reg# SKD 6169 G) from Mich Automobile Pte Ltd in Turf City for S$39,011 and paid the full amount upfront via trading in our old car (Honda Accord, Reg # SDQ 902 K) for $15,999 and DBS bank transfer of $23,012 to the company account of Mich Automobile Pte Ltd. The Sales Agreement was signed together with Michael Boey (Boey Fook Weng, NRIC: S1750030I); while the sole director of this company, his wife, Michelle (Ow Yin Fun, NRIC: S6914096C) was physically present during the sale, however did not sign any contracts / sales agreements. Sales agreement attached for your consideration. Mich Automobile is a Singapore registered company which at this point is solvent. We also had the car insured on the day of purchase by Aviva Insurance Pte Ltd. Upon not receiving the title transfer confirmation from LTA (Land transport Authority) until 27-July, which Michael claimed to have completed, we tried to contact Michael however he was no longer contactable – our messages were ignored and phone calls not answered. At 1am on 01-Aug, a tow truck with 2 individuals in it, gained entry to our condominium, One Amber on false claims without producing any documentation and towed the aforementioned car away. We are separately pursuing the building management and security for a case of negligence and trespassing. Upon not finding the car in our carpark the next morning, we lodged a Police Report at Marine Parade police station. We later found out that Skyway Credit Pte Ltd repossessed this car as they were owed $33,000 from Mich Automobile for this car. Michael absconded from Singapore on 27-July. I am reaching out to fellow members here to check if you or someone you know has been a victim of Mich Automobile. If so, I welcome you to please share my details so we can join forces in taking action against these corrupt individuals. We have all but lost our hard earned money and are running out of options to recover anything from the system at play here…

  13. Deciding that enough was enough, one woman in Singapore has made it her personal mission to nab all adulterous married men looking for sexual flings online. The woman said that she has gotten evidence of the cheating ways of some men who claimed to be married and are looking for sexual partners on a famous online chat app. She showed photos of the men, who she approached and who she said had admitted that they were looking for flings. One of them said that he had problems in his marriage and was looking for a way out. She says that such incidents only make her more determined to root out the problem of adulterous men online and that she will continue her acts as the masked female vigilante. 15. More money recouped in 2014 with Case's help The Consumers Association of Singapore (Case) helped consumers wrangle back $439,701 from businesses last year, a spike from the $284,465 recovered in 2013. The jump could be a sign that more consumers with unresolved disputes involving high contract values, such as the purchase of beauty packages and cars, are turning to mediation for resolution, the consumer watchdog said in a statement yesterday. The largest settlement involved a woman who was invited to try a slimming session at a promotional price of $18. She was later pressured by the beauty salon into buying various slimming packages for about $88,000, even though she was unemployed. The matter was escalated to Case's mediation centre, and both parties eventually agreed on a cash refund of $55,000. The jump in the total amount recouped last year could also be because more businesses are open to mediation as a way of preventing matters from spiralling out of control, said Case executive director Seah Seng Choon. Last year, Case handled 125 disputes, of which 75.2 per cent were resolved. The sectors with the highest resolution rates were slimming and furniture (100 per cent), motor car (91.3 per cent), and electrical and electronics (85.7 per cent). In 2013, only 68.5 per cent of 146 cases were resolved. The Case Mediation Centre was set up in 1999 to resolve disputes between consumers and businesses in the presence of a third-party mediator - a trained Case volunteer. However, Case cannot force the seller to show up for mediation, as it is a voluntary process. After a settlement is made, it is up to the consumer to enforce it. The association, said Mr Seah, had found it easier to get business owners to the table last year, when several high-profile shutdowns and cheating cases rocked the industry. In January last year, hundreds of travellers were left in the lurch after popular coach and travel agency Five Stars Tours abruptly closed all its eight branches across Singapore. Last November, a Vietnamese tourist went down on his knees to beg for a refund after being allegedly overcharged for an iPhone at a Sim Lim Square shop. "Before, it was harder to get to businesses because they were less familiar with the way mediation is conducted," said Mr Seah. "They now realise that it's a cheaper alternative than getting sued by the customer, and is also less hostile and confrontational." He added that companies may also fear that matters would get out of control, resulting in negative publicity. "If there is an amicable settlement, there is also a higher chance that the customer will return," said Mr Seah. Mr Chan Chong Beng, chief executive of interior furnishing firm Goodrich Global, thinks mediation works. "If it involves a company that is at fault, getting a call from Case will really make those responsible sit up and take notice," he said. "Also, you know the customer is serious about his complaint, so they may be more inclined to take it seriously." But Madam Raja Lachimi, 55, who lost a $200 deposit in 2012 after the contractor who was supposed to paint her house never showed up, thinks that mediation does not help that much. She reported the matter to Case, and it tried to contact the painter, she said, but nothing happened. "I don't think mediation helps where companies are out to cheat their customers. They just won't show up for mediation," she said. "It would work only in cases where the other party is willing to co-operate." - See more at: http://news.asiaone.com/news/business/more-money-recouped-2014-cases-help#sthash.hyAHQwLd.dpuf

  17. from Yahoo news: Large testicles linked to higher rates of cheating A well-known zoologist from Norway is suggesting that his research on the size of male primates' testicles is somehow proof that female humans are likely to cheat. If this sounds like a stretch, that's because it is. Petter Bøckman, from the University of Oslo, released a new study that shows the larger the size of a male primate's testicles the greater the chance that he and his female partner with be unfaithful, reports The Telegraph. The reasons for the infidelity are not entirely clear, but Bøckman suggests that a male with large testicles has a greater amount of sperm, and therefore, is motivated to spread his genes via multiple females. It is further implied that because females are more selective in their mate choice, she is looking for a male can get the procreation mission accomplished. Even if she mates with a large-testicled male, she will keep looking for a man who is more likely to be faithful. The most bizarre aspect of this research is the fact that Bøckman says these findings are proof that female humans cheat. "We can pledge our fidelity until we are blue in the face, but this is evidence that our females are cheating," he says. "We are not like chimpanzees, where the female has four or five sexual partners every time she is in heat, but there is always a certain likelihood that the neighbouring male has dropped by.” Ugh. Where to start with Bøckman's comments. First of all, it's not news that women cheat, just as men do, so the fact that he points this out is of no real significance. Secondly, it is entirely possible that the reasons why human women cheat have very little to do with the same reasons why female bonobos, gorillas, and chimpanzees are unfaithful. It seems highly unlikely that a human female would cheat on her husband or boyfriend simply because his testicles are too large! In all fairness to Bøckman though, maybe what he was trying to indicate is the fact that humans have unconscious biological drives, not unlike primates. Perhaps it is more plausible that a woman would cheat because she senses a lack of commitment -- physically, mentally or emotionally -- in her partner. What are your thoughts on the findings of this study? Do you think it is a reflection of human sexual behaviour? 23. HOW DO YOU SUGGEST GOING ABOUT SOLVING THIS COMPLICATE PROBLEM? ANYONE WITH PERSONAL EXPERIENCE TO SHARE? Stuck in a sticky situation. Im from HK and moved over here with my partner of 9 years from Aus. We moved so I could be closer to my family. Early last year we got married in Aus, of which majority of our friends from HK flew over to witness. During Oct, I got suspicious of my husband as I could tell things weren't right and he admitted he was texting/seeing someone on the side as I was too busy for him and he felt 'neglected'. Drama queen. Anyway, I have quite a successful job, and he is often left on own during some evenings, while I am out working. I said I was going to leave him and he threatened to take his own life, as I was the only one who really cares for him (he doesn't have any close friends in HK and is not so close with his family in Aus). So I forgave him and promised him that I wouldn't spend so much time on my work. A patchy xmas went by, and we went away during CNY on a sort of 'patch things out' holiday. It went really well, we spoke about how we felt and that we were newly married and having children. He really wants children at the moment and has booked in with the Family Association for us to visit next week. Then last night, I just so happen to go on his email, and BAM - there it is - email messages to and from this girl he was seeing in Oct. Things such as, i love you, i may be with my wife but my heart is with you, and this girl emailing him back asking him to spend more time with her and telling him she wants to be his 'Mrs'. Emails and pictures galore. The whole thing. Even emails from when we were on our patch-up holiday "had to quickly sneak away to tel you I miss and love you!!" What the hell right? Just the other day he was saying he really wants kids now and wants me to stop contraception and blah blah blah.. and then this? Why would he still want kids? So husband comes home, after I discovred all this when he was at the gym. I calm my nerves and act out all normal as if i didn't know anything. Now the question is - how the hell do I tell him? I want to leave him. I want separation/divorce. This is not the first time he has 'wandered' off in our relationship, as it happened many years ago and he promised he changed. We share a house together, he has no friends and no family here. I am scared if I leave him, he will do something silly to himself, like he always said he will. Emotional blackmail i know, but it is working. Also, how do I break the news to my family and friends, who all flew over to our wedding? They all love him and think he is great. Together we meet up with my family at least twice a week without fail. If I start showing up on my own, they will get suspicious. sorry for the long message....... i don't even know where to start. haven't even told my closest friends as I am greatly embarrassed this has happened. I have a lot of pride which has now been shattered. he kissed me goodbye before he left for work and he has booked dinner and movies tonight.... how and when shall i break the news?!?!
