my humble suggestion

is to buy a pair of KEF bookshelf speakers (depending your budget) and an elastic band (Less than a dollar)

the tricky part is to hold the speakers next to your ears with the elastic band without constricting the blood supply to your brain

the bass will, i guarantee you, be rich and powerful than any earphones you can ever find on this planet or universe currently

 

i have not tried it

but if you are successful

you may want to patent the set-up

you know how those F1 driver's strap-on neck protector/harness looks like?.... i have a simplified one for kart racing. If i can attach the speakers on it so that they are just a few mm away from my ears, i will be having mobile sounds without the 'head-straps' you suggested. The harness will take the weight of the speakers and my head will not be burdened by the strap.

 

dream: make the DIY shoulder-speakers setup work and walk around with it [:p]

For headphones, I would recommend you Ultrasone DJ1 pro. Its a niche brand and you would instantly fall in love with the sound that comes out from it. It produces live surround sound. For earphones, I would recommend Klipsch S4.

i wanted a headphone so powerful that basically it is like a sub woofer next to your ear type. nope, no manufacturer can do that so i gave up. you may have to buy an amp also.

The heart of devices such as those 5.1 (less the speakers, made by Creative etc) seems to be a tiny box size of a typical MP3 player. This can easily go into my pants' pocket. High-power compact bookshelf speakers are not really bulky and can be attached to the harness (strapped to shoulders/chests, as in F1 driver's setup but less bulky). The speakers-harness compo shouldnt be much more 'clumsy' than a backpack?

Headphones- larger diameter drivers, muffler to isolate external noise, will meet your rich and bassy requirement.

Sennheiser Px100 is on the ear type, not those heavy and hot full cup type. titanium driver, natural, clear and rich sound.

Bro, take a trip down to Jaben (4th floor, The Adelphi).. they have a wide range of earphones for you to try. And best is, you can sit down and try as many and as long as you want before committing to buy one. The staff are very friendly and helpful too. Top notch service i would say.
