a bit disappointed after waiting for close to a year.

Yup, it's a bit draggy because the director chose to show extra bits which were not in the original Hobbit novel, but were later added in by the author, Tolkien.

You see, the original "Hobbit" was more like a children's fairy-tale where the forces of good band together, go on an adventure, and defeat evil. It did not explain why in the world the dwarves would want to include Gandalf and Bilbo in their mission, which is primarily to liberate their mountain stronghold. It also does not explain what is Gandalf's motivation to confront and defeat Smaug, the dragon.

On the surface, it appears like the quarrel is between the dwarves and Smaug, so Bilbo's and Gandalf's motivations in participating and the dwarves' acceptance of them is unclear.

Tolkien later clarified this part with more details as a follow-up, as an appendix in The Lord of the Rings (the book, not the movie) - and all this extra explanation and additional storyline is in the Hobbit movie, thus making it a tad too long, requiring a Part 2!

They actually stretched The Hobbit out to 3 movies. Originally plan was only 2.

Somewhat action packed but rather blunt storyline.

The pivotal role Gollum helped the movie from being the worst unconvincing unexpected adventure ever.

Without him, this could have easily been Lord of the Ring deleted scenes.

Too many 'suddenly' moments also shifted mind of expected add ons from the adventure plot.

Perhaps trying too hard to crank up the unexpectation level?

Lots of half baked goodies and very little substance.

Sorry, i won't call it total flop but to me, this prequel was not even near Lord of the Ring material.

I watched the movie yesterday at Lido's IMAX theater in 3d. This 48fps/HD 3D/whatever you wanna call it makes me feel like i'm watching the movie on the display TVs at courts or best denki. Feels weird and fake, i don't like.

The movie itself was meh.

Which one nicest? I think Glamdring is by far the best looking. I don't know what to make of Orcrist's design. It looks like Sting chopped in half. Would have been cooler if it came as a pair

Nice blades [wave]

Haha me still prefer those from the called "风云兵器谱" especially 步惊云's 绝世好剑 & 聂风's 雪饮狂刀 :

I tend to like swords that are not too over the top. The first one is OK, but the second one is too fantasy / modern.

I think the sword below is nice. It has a highly decorated pommel and hilt with runes to give it that fantasy look. However, it is still "realistic" enough for someone to actually use in ancient times.

If you guys are interested in these stuff, I have some pictures of weaponry I took when I was in the fortress museum in Nuremburg, South of Germany.

DSCF3870.jpg

Check the size of the crossbow, I put my bag there for references. The metal plate is a massive shield, & they fire through the small hole.

Handy size crossbows

Check the size of the rifles. make the GPMG looks like christmas gift for kids.

DSCF4003.jpg

Zweihander (2 handed sword). Many of these are over 6 feet (183cm) in length.

Nice decorative handguns.

The desolation of Smaug ended abruptly. Storyline so so....and elves join the fray this time

The "Desolation..." movie is just so-so until Smaug appears much later.

The dragon is impressive and luckily, once again, the movie is "saved" from mediocrity and rambling storyline.

Even the elves couldn't have done it on their own.

This installment of the Hobbit is noticeably more violent than even the LOTR trilogy - lot of heads (the bad guys') get lopped off but surprisingly, not a drop of blood (!), all the better to maintain the PG rating.
