Watwheels Supersonic January 3, 2012 Share January 3, 2012 For me I'm existing subscriber, I switch from cable to fibre. Installation fee waived, ONT, router foc. I dunno about new subscriber. I also have existing router and all that. Since the installation guy install and setup everything for me I just leave it at that and keep my router as spare. I am NOT a computer idoit. 1) Singtel + Asus RT-N56U. Check out this HWZ thread Personally I'm on: ONT ---> Singtel Router (Bridged Mode) ---> Asus RT-N56U ---> 16-port switch ---> CAT6 Patch Panel ----> Entire House I think you can throw out the Singtel Router if you don't need MIO Voice + MIOTV. In fact, I think the Asus firmware could possibly let the Asus router itself deal with the MIO services but I kept the Singtel Router just to have some peace of mine. Setting it to bridge resulted in the routing function + wireless being handled by the Asus anyway. 2) Think ISPs don't allow self-install as they need to activate the services onsite (I may be wrong). But I got my setup fees waived when I signed up at IT Show.

I am NOT a computer idoit. all allow you to use your own router if you are not getting digital phone line. BUT ONT installation is a big scam to screw you of $50++!! what they basically do is bring the fibre converter to your home, plug in the fibre and say bye bye they say it is a mandatory service. also, upon termination, you CANNOT return the ONT yourself even if it is next to your home. it is another scam to screw you of another fee in collection
Watwheels Supersonic January 3, 2012 Share January 3, 2012 I think self installation is not much of an issue. The issue is that TS dun have the equipement to check the signal at the TP, the installation guy will call his HQ saying the signal is good blah blah blah. This is what I saw the install guy did to make sure that the activation is ok.

Yes... cannot self install. They come with a box, is it ONT? It connects from wall box to this box on fibre. On this box got 4 LAN port but only port 1 is active. Also only allows 1 IP addr. I have to connect my wireless router to this box. Behind my router, I have my PCs and wireless devices.

I've yet to find time to do packet sniffing to analyse, but there is a chance that they are using VLAN tagging, that's why normal routers cannot work. If you think of it, there is nothing special as only packets are coming in via the LAN port. The only thing I can think of that makes our normal SOHO routers can't interprete is VLAN tagging. If someone can spare a CISCO switch or router for testing, I believe it'll be able to work without the ISP equipments.
Drumstick Clutched January 3, 2012 Share January 3, 2012 Think need the gateway for specific settings. Tried connecting directly from NC box to comp cannot connect. Been using SH Fiber 1 yr+... From socket -> NC -> gateway Notice about SH gateway, if direct cable can get 99% speed. But wifi cap at 21mbps. Search thru the settings but can't find anything about wifi speed cap. ↡ Advertisement
