bros...

my car is about 6yrs old.. 3 years full AD serviced... after which i last service by AD and i was on my own...

so far everything ok till lately (for approx 2months liao) my car air con is very cold... it has ALWAYS been at 26-27'c (manual control not digital)... and when i switch to 'auto'... the temp of the aircon will not be cold after the car temp in the car cools down. but now its really cool like all the way...

when setting at 'auto'... and i adjust the temp setting down, automatically the blower switches higher... but now even if i switch the temp up higher the blower switches higher and is only normal when i adjust back the temp to 25-26...

ok i guess its abit confusing... maybe the thermosat is faulty? or smthing i dont know?... btw this happened after i did and oil change at a JB WS... the mech asked me to service my aircon i said no thanks... he said air con should service even when its fine if not will blah blah blah... i just smiled and said no thanks again...

is there anything he could have done/adjusted to make my aircon super cold?... lol

Maybe he changed air con filter for you?

What car are you driving?

bro, aircon not cold usually caused by a few reasons...

1) like you said, termostate.

2) cooling coil or evaporator-

3) compressor

4) aircon gas leak somewhere.

Go to any workshop that repairs aircon and they can find out the problem for you in the matter of mins... but bear in mind that aircon repair is not gg to be cheap, especially changing the cooling coil cause they will have to dismantle your whole dashboard in term to replace the coil...

i think is normal right? aircon always be cooler while the car is moving. are you talking about cold start in the morning?

Need some advise.
When start the car, on air con and notice only got air but no con, every time start car also this problem but con come back after a while when car is moving.
Is it the compressor on the way up lorry?

Try replacing the air-con relay... way cheaper than changing the compressor straight away!

I have the same symptom as yours. After changing air-con relay, no more occurrance.

Hi I am new.. just want to ask if you all think evaporator coil needs to be washed/cleaned? I called some workshop and say my aircon not very cold recently.. do they do cleaning like those house aircon cleaning kind.. but most of them ask me to drive down and check. They usually recommend to replace the whole coil.

Which is better/cheaper?

below for those facing aircon issues -

months back felt during every drive, met some symptoms - a slight burn oil smell for few seconds within 1st few mins drive, thereafter no smell. then, after 30-40 mins drive a/c less cold, cool but not cold. there was also few seconds hissing sound occasionally, esp during start up.

went to m--kc--l. according to ah h--t, hissing due to low gas, means possible leak within evaporator (cooling coil), since no leak visible at condenser near front grill & any a/c piping in engine bay. vacuum n recharge then told to monitor; if still hissing, hav to chg evaporator.

pm a newly setup svc centre on above symptoms, mentioned worst case scenario also evaporator issue, else could be thermal expansion v/v (txv) choked, causing release of temporary smell.

recently realized y a/c not so cold after longer drivin, realized a/c pipe freezing issue. googled in forum, most replies pointing to thermostat issue. headed down to w/s at northlink, mentioned same issue. spent a day to chg evaporator (actually existing one looked ok n no leak, but just chg to avoid dismantling dashboard again), txv & thermostat.

drove for few days, a/c pipe still frosting. went back to troubleshoot - chk a/c control switch, chg relay n drive for 30mins, still frosting n also has hissing. vacuum n recharge a/c system, then discovered when a/c cut off, left gauge of a/c vacuum / recharge m/c took a while to move to upper range of "ok". according to mech, left gauge needle should move up promptly after a/c off. then chk clutch n is ok (engage when on, disengage when off).

final conclusion was compressor pump still pumping refrigerant when a/c off but fan on, need few minutes to stop pumping. hence when drivin, cut off less than few mins, that y compressor was in a state of continual operation resulting in freezing of a/c pipe.

mech recommend to dismantle compressor to chk oil dirty / contaminated, then need to chk drier if dirty / contaminated, else affect newly chg components.

lesson learn -

smell not easy to trace, usual answers always a/c filter dirty, evaporator moldy;

my case proved challenging to most mech out there (m glad i'm present in the whole troubleshooting process & w/c willing to diagnose, though felt a bit wasted to chg internal components, but who knows maybe thermostat was one of defective ones);

many w/s seemed like don't do pressure test on a/c system before givin proper advice; e.g. they liked to point the freezing of a/c pipes to faulty thermostat, wc was possibly not in my case.

hope this simple (yet not so simple) case of burnt smell & a/c less cold after long drive benefits those with similar issues.

a good article -

update - still encountering a/c pipe frost after replacing a/c comp & dryer; test ran for almost 1hr. left ride in ws overnight to trouble shoot. possibly another a/c thermostat not working properly. gd thing ws offered goodwill rental car.

this will be an enriching experience for both ws n me.
