Happily1986 5th Gear March 27, 2012 Share March 27, 2012 I'm checking both of these two 3G Wifi routers from your recommendation, if got any questions, may check if you again. Engenius ESR 6650 and Aztech HW550 http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showto...p;#entry4324775 Fullwell at Sim Lim is selling at $49 each, or you got other recommended sellers? I need to get a separate sim card dongle for the 3G Wifi router, right? any recommendation? Sim Lim Sq, i only buy from Fuwell, Bell, Mediapro so far. Very fuss free. (However that doesn't mean that there aren't any more good dealers there. I just recommend what i can verify, thats all.) Sim card dongle just get the Huawei E173 or the EOL E1550 (doubt you can find it first hand though). Try to get those folks who offload theirs after getting it free from their telcos. Searching in HWZ or VR-Zone will be good. ↡ Advertisement
Billcoke 2nd Gear March 27, 2012 Author Share March 27, 2012 Think I got a Huawei from Singtel a few years back, didn't know what to do with it, almost threw it away. Will check on HWZ and VR-Zone. Fireball0088 5th Gear March 28, 2012 Share March 28, 2012 honestly, unless you are getting a 3T3R router which is based on either a Broadcom or Atheros chipset, i suggest you don't consider TP link, Linksys and Huawei. what is 3T3R?

As for the dongle, when overseas, can we use those normal prepaid sim cards used in iphone, or it must be those prepaid broadband card? http://info.singtel.com/personal/communica...ited-data-packs http://prepaid-wireless-internet-access.we...om/page/SingTel
Billcoke 2nd Gear March 28, 2012 Author Share March 28, 2012 what is 3T3R? I think it stands for 3 Transmit and 3 Receive port, but I'm not sure if it is the same as 2 LAN, 1 Internet?
Happily1986 5th Gear March 28, 2012 Share March 28, 2012 what is 3T3R? it stands for 3 transmit 3 receive. you can have 1t1r and 2t2r as well. anything better than 1t1r leverages on MIMO multiple input multiple ouput technology which supposedly improves throughput. e.g. 3t3r states that you have 3 antennas used for transmit and the same 3 antennas may be used for receiving purpose as well. some routers come with 2 visible and modular antennas which can be replaced and one internal antenna on the pcb. if you use advanced firmware such as dd wrt, open wrt or maybe tomato, you can even instruct which antennas can be used for transmit or receive etc.

Billcoke 2nd Gear March 28, 2012 Author Share March 28, 2012 802.11n or 802.11g will not matter because the internet bandwidth is grossly under what 802.11g or 802.11n can support. However, i do not believe you can find a 3G wifi router on 802.11g now. Btw i think the bandwidth is in terms of Mb and not MB. Mb is 0.125 of a MB. Galaxy Note can support 802.11n i am sure, so does iPhone 4. The rest you just need to refer to their technical spreadsheet. eh, PS3, you serious?? you sure you bringing PS3 overseas? If upgrading the Internet data plan, what is the recommended minimum Internet bandwidth speed before we can enjoy real benefit in performance when switching from G router to N Router? Happily1986 5th Gear March 28, 2012 Share March 28, 2012 If upgrading the Internet data plan, what is the recommended minimum Internet bandwidth speed before we can enjoy real benefit in performance when switching from G router to N Router? the practical throughput that can be sustained by most chipsets found in G routers is only about 10Mbps. Therefore, you should change your router if you are going to subscribe anything superior to 10Mbps. That being said, if you can spare the hassle to lay cat5e or cat6 cable in a star topology in your house, it will be the best thing to do imo. 802.11n will simply a convenient connectivity for e.g. laptops or smartphones. This is because honestly even for 802.11n, the practical limit is about 50Mbps sustained. Gigabit ethernet can easily realise about 600Mbps.

Billcoke 2nd Gear April 2, 2012 Author Share April 2, 2012 (edited) honestly, unless you are getting a 3T3R router which is based on either a Broadcom or Atheros chipset, i suggest you don't consider TP link, Linksys and Huawei. Huawei may have link to China military. ---------------------- http://www.todayonline.com/World/EDC120402...e-broadband-ban Huawei to pursue related projects despite Aussie broadband ban 04:45 AM Apr 02, 2012 MELBOURNE - Huawei Technologies, China's largest maker of telephone equipment, said yesterday it will continue to pursue projects related to Australia's broadband network after being banned from bidding on contracts over security concerns. Huawei will not be allowed to bid for work on the A$35.9 billion (S$46.7 billion) project for Australia's national broadband network, the government has said, marking the second time in six months that the Chinese company has been barred from an overseas government contract. The Australian ban adds to political woes for Huawei, the world's second-largest vendor of phone network equipment with A$31 billion in sales last year. The company has repeatedly run into opposition from United States lawmakers, who have cited security concerns because of Huawei's alleged links to China's military, which the company has denied. Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard last month defended her government's decision to ban Huawei, saying it was because of "national interests". The Australian network will provide fibre-optic access to 3.5 million premises in Australia by mid-2015, Ms Gillard said last week. The National Broadband Network plans to roll out fibre to 93 per cent of Australia's population during the next decade, with the rest served by wireless and satellite. Happily1986 5th Gear April 2, 2012 Share April 2, 2012 tell me about it. there was a local furore quite sometime back when one telco decided to go huawei for backend solutions due to the cost savings. in the end the huawei dslams couldn't even support adsl2+ properly. Kax2 Neutral Newbie April 2, 2012 Share April 2, 2012 This tp link router is pretty small and signal is good for hotel room use. There is also a bigger model that looks like the airport express. They are retailing for Rmb180 and rmb120 respectively, which is around $36sgd and $25 sgd.

A friend of mine tested the TP-link small router in China, the range is around 1m. Yes, good enough for a hotel room but not for our housing apartment.
