Civic6228 6th Gear May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 (edited) the coe system is infact working! if without coe, i'd have 2 or 3 cars! a cheap car now will cost 100k, if there wasn't coe, a car would cost perhaps 50k the price i paid for my current car would allow me to buy 3 cars without coe and i would buy 3 1 2 seater coupe 1 luxury sedan 1 extremely small car for daily commute to work i'm sure many others would think the same as i do Coe working ? in that case why the heavy traffic in the expressway everyday .... And of course the jams which is a result of more accidents as there are more cars on the road. It is deem to be working for u becos u are not rich enough to buy 2, 3, or more cars. There are many people out there that can afford to buy more than one car. Edited May 4, 2012 by Civic6228 ↡ Advertisement
Expertz 1st Gear May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 If anyone even thinks that this move will cause COE prices to fall ... WRONG! From each bidding exercise's statistics over the last 6 months, the demand continues to far exceed supply. With more new models being launched by luxury marques, the distributors will be fighting their own turf war to gain market share and put as many of their new models on the road. So COE prices are unlikely to fall significantly, if at all. What I fear more though, is that this retrogressive move will cause worsening jams, cos the car population will continue to grow by 1.5% a year, while the already-high COEs will result in existing owners to cling on to their prized possession even more so (up to the full 10 years even) - since many would have realized by now that they may never get to own another new car again, ever in their life time, or what remains of it here! i agree! to add on, if a brand new car costs 250k and a rich person buys it for 2 years and decides to change that 250k car would effectively be sold at perhaps 200k? which means a 50k discount for people who cannot afford 250k for a brand new car high coes do infact benefit the average income earner! a subaru legacy costs 170k brand new, it is going for 80k after 2 years, that is a 90k savings! if that legacy costs 110k brand new, after 2 years it would go for maybe 60 or 70k. cheaper no doubt but the savings would only be at best 50k so the average income family do stand to benefit from high coe prices

There are many people out there that can afford to buy more than one cars. well bad as it is, the situation could have been a lot worst! we could have 5 - 6x more cars on the roads if cars were cheap just a few years back the qq and picantoes were extremely popular on the roads because they were cheap. imagine what would happen if such families are able to afford to buy 2 or 3 qq or picantoes for every 1 person out there now who can buy more than 1 car, there'll be 100 more if the coe system was scrapped and until somebody can come up with a better solution to replace the current coe system, i will completely agree that the system is the best possible system to regulate cars on our roads the problem isn't the coe system but the large influx of foreigners due to the 60.1% 8 years ago our population stood at 3m, currently we are at 5.5m its not just the roads that are jammed and crowded, have you taken a walk down orchard road nowadays? the human jams on orchard road on a daily basis only happens on xmas and new years day 8 years ago

Xpose Clutched May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 i don't see how this is going to be fair PRs contribute to the economy and pay their taxes just like locals do so why must we punish the PRs? this is like saying, we have a 70% chinese population so we should allocate 70% coes to chinese; without thinking that everybody else will be affected to your benefit - not that i'm racist, just trying to make a comparison Not happy of unfair treatment as PR? Simple, convert to a singaporean and we will treat u the same level of treatment as the rest of singaporean. In times of war, will PR take arms and proudly say I will defend Singapore? Will PR be willing to serve 2 years of their life in NS follow by the 10 cycle of icts and ippt commiments? Will PR still stay and contribute to the economy and work force when times are bad here? I know I will and have too, even though at times I have doubts about such actions especially during recent years of NDP parade where I often find myself being surrounded by groups of foriegn talents. I even questioned myself to the extent of is being a singaporean a minority? I am not racist nor am I baised but to me, it seems like most of the FT or PR are here for the same motive or objective, milking money to spend n enjoy back home. One PR ever told me, getting PR enable him to job hop with wages increment easily, currency exchange rate closing to 2.41 makes his spending across the bridge at home so shiok and sweet, lastly if he do not wish to work here anymore, give up the PR and CPF is another pot of gold again... Maroon5 5th Gear May 4, 2012 Share May 4, 2012 im not so worried abt jams, as tat can b controlled thru ERP. sometimes u jus cant deny its effect on cost conscious drivers. like the 730-8am Eunos PIE westwards $1 and FOC after 8am. i hv experienced both n now i happily pay the $1 where i get to drive 90-100kmh. im more concerned abt carpark. a car stil needs a place to park regardless how much u raise the rates. This type of thinking is similar to what nearly demolished S Korea's economy 20 years ago. There was a huge wave of resentment by the Koreans on all things foreign, be it foreign cars, electronics, etc. There was even open demonstrations where foreign made cars were deliberately damaged in front of TV cameras. Foreign made cars were target of vandals everwhere. Luckily some logical thinking leaders warned them that could create a backlash of Korean products or Korean cars in other countries as well. Everyone kept quiet after that. At that time, Korea was a net exporter (maybe they still are today) Remember, there are Singaporean FT or PRs in many other countries around the world. Anyone knows what is the ratio of a PR in Singapore vs a Singaporean PR/FT in another country? 25 years ago during the peak of migration out of Singapore by Singaporean, my professor told me it was like 1 to 1 (zero net growth in population). Not sure what is the ratio now. At that time the PM (senior) had to shed tears on TV to plead people not to migrate. Who are we to say the motive of Singaporean FT/PR in other countries are any different and they do not bring in enourmous wealth back to Singapore as well?
