Brake fluid DOT4 vs DOT5.1

For those using brembo or other bbk, would u pick dot4 or dot5.1? Which is better in term of performance and moist adsorbion?i

bro i think choice of brake fluid is more based on usage rather than type of bbk. I believe dot 5.1 is higher spec than dot 4, and also a lot more expensive. However i am using dot 4 with my brakes (front Prodrive, rear Sti) and no fade even after 5-6 hot laps on sepang. For longer endurance tracking, i wld go for dot 5.1

Use the one with the highest boiling point if you need to do frequent high speed braking. All brake fluid will absorb surrounding moisture except silicon brake fluid.

will changing only brake fluid improve the braking ???? assuming its just normal servicing

big NO

 

unless you are going downhill and likes to brake alot or go tracking. New brake fluid reduces brake fade better than old fluids, because of the reduced boiling point due to moisture.

It's is a good practice for both car owners and mechanics to check the brake fluid moisture % whenever the the car is in for servicing. Brake fluid with high % of moisture will boil at much lower boiling temp and will overtime cause brake piston seizure resulting in costly brake overhaul.

I usually change out my brake fluid once a year or two due to our frequent start stop traffic conditions in Singapore and humid weather. Brakes feel better after that.

Yes two years is almost the right time for our humid and hot weather. Once the water content reaches certain % you will feel the brake looses its solid hydraulic brake force - its tend to be spongy. This can be overcome by removing all the used brake fluid and replace with the correct brake fluid. The air bubbles bleeding process MUST be carried out either via pressure or vacuum brake bleeder ( hand vacuum pump is ok but very slow). Avoid using leg pumping power as the multi pumping actions will introduce more dirt into the master cylinder and will gradually travel down towards the slave cylinders/pistons. The dirt will over time cause system failure.
