with the skype apps on your iphone or android phone, it is as good as the free internet call :D

lag depends on the country bandwidth, some are fine and some may lag.

I am using skype to skype call, on android phone. It's free.

Just download the App.

Even Skype to skype (with video is free), no need to spend any money on these accessories.

i was just wondering if a wired connection will be better than a wireless connection ??

i also have skype installed on my galaxy note. but i am using Hoiio ... but i do encounter a half-second lag with my overseas calls when i am home connected wireless to my 25mbps Fibre BB.

i have both a USB handset and a USB headset for calling skype on my PC and laptop. If travelling, i will bring the handset as it is easier to pack.

skype to skype calls are free but calls to landlines or mobile numbers are chargeable.

yes i find LAN is usually faster and more stable than Wifi. Depends alot on the local setup.

A few years ago..this was quite popular but since the introduction of smartphone, I don't see people using it already.

You and the other party must be connected to the internet at all times. Whether 3G, WiFi or LAN will do.

Stability and speed of the connection is the main problem.

Skype is a real threat to Telecom operators as this graph from telegeography shows. Likewise whatsapp to SMS revenue.

So if overseas must have free wifi connection if not on 3G connection sure very ex loh.

Yes. I think most countries the hotels have WiFi already. It is common in Japan and Europe (just came back from there, even my small hotels has WiFi).

Australia might be a problem. Most hotels, big and small charge for WiFi. But I just camp at the hotel's bar, order a drink and Skype/email over there. Free WiFi. I was in Cambodia (PP), there is WiFi in the room too. It is surprisingly fast and some of my friends commented that it is even faster than their internet at home, considering so many people were logged in at the same time.

If you are travelling on a business trip, I think most companies will put their staff up at those business type of hotels where there is internet connection or they will pay for it. When we travel on personal trips, besides looking at the hotel location, price and reviews, I would say in recent years, having free WiFi is one of our considerations too. Whether in the room itself or at the lobby is not really important.
