Sorry for this noob question but,

 

everytime after car preventive servicing i get back part of a bottle of engine oil.

erm, what am i supposed to do with it?

am i advised to change engine oil periodically myself on top of my 6-monthly servicing?

how long can it keep the oil for?

advisable to keep this in the boot (and get sunned at)?

Bro, check your engine oil level using the dipstick periodically and top up manually from time to time, since you still have some spare engine oil at hand.

what car are u driving? 3L is sufficient for a standard 1.5L/1.6L Japs sedan (3/4 full mark at dipstick). A standard Engine oil is 4L pack. So, the left over of 1L could be kept for 3 rounds to accumulate 3L worth of engine oil for the next round of servicing.

Keep it in a cool & dry place should be fine.

Engine oil is extremely stable and take yrs to breakdown naturally... 1.5yrs still okie. so long you keep it in dark and cool places without exposing to direct sunlight. btw, Make sure that the oil cap is tightly closed.

 

As for your oil level, if your car doesnt have any oil leaking issue, check it once a month is more than sufficient. you will know your engine oil leak if the parking lot had oil stain (of course, without such stain before you park, otherwise, it could be left by other car).

Actually, for the next oil change, u shld use the remaining oil fm the last oil change and top up from a new bottle. Repeat for each subsequent oil change.

 

this way, each opened bottle is only 10k km "old".

 

dip stick check every month shld be ok. Or each time u chk tyre air pressure. Also good to chk prior to long drives to malaysia.

Follow SAF jerry can POL method...cut out a few layer of plastic from plastic bag and place over the opening of the bottle before screwing the cap on...keep air out and leak proof the bottle of oil..

if some particles like cockraches or pebbles goes into the left over engine oil, and you use it for your next servicing, your car is in for a nasty damage. So to play safe, why take the risk to save a pint of oil ? your car is not worth risking over atiny amount.

eh this leftover oil is for purposes such as dipstick showing less than optimal level down the road, then u can top-up abit with the leftover oil. Plus dont save and accumulate the oil..

understood. so now i have 3 bottles of engine oil from my previous 3 preventive servicing.

will keep the most recent one. the rest are at least 6months-1.5yrs old liao.

is there a proper way to dispose of the older bottles?

How can the cockraches or pepples enter the bottle of oil when it was capped after the last used

I think ideal time for oil changes is 3000 to 5000 km or three month. You will want to have your oil filter replaced not every time. your oil is changed as well. A filter is important for removing solid particles and carbon buster,dirt, from the oil before they harm the engine.

I usually transfer leftovers into smaller quality bottle.

Save space and easier to carry around.

How do you get pebbles in your oil?

 

Anyway if you have a problem with cockroaches,

 

maybe you need better hygiene.

thanks bros for all your replies.

 

will start to check my engine oil level more regularly... love the smoothness of my ride every time my car comes out of servicing...

 

also gotta learn to form a habit of checking my car tyre... last time i checked (about 3 months since previous) my tyre Pa only 180! (recommended 220)... that's like almost 20% lower... zzz...

 

i doubt i'll have problem with roaches.. i have a strict no food rule for my car.. only plain water.. haha... machiam MRT...
