sushi and kimchi better catch on turbo play for b&b car. if not can tabao liao.

a test drive is worth more than a thousand words...i test drove it, ride pretty smooth and power still ok...but i dun really appreciate the design and its interior...looks dated.

When the auto industry went green, conti cars went the direction of using diesel while jap went for hybrid. in the last few years, conti also went for engine downsizing (but compensate with forced induction) to meet emission standards. jap are not interested in forced induction mass production cars.

in human biology, if you take 2 humans, but 1 has his metabolic rate doubled. the one with the double rate is likely to live half as long as the other. this is a good (IMHO) analogy of forced induction vs NA.

conti has also entered the next phase of transmission: twin clutch, but jap is unconvinced. CVT seems to be making a re-emergence (2012), maybe it is the jap's answer to twin clutch, not sure.

VW's 7-speed dry DSG is like nuclear power. the idea/concept of both is good, but human's implementation of these 2 technologies is not perfect, and will take time to perfect it. if you need to blame, blame human's imperfect implementation and not the technology behind it.

asian governments usually tax petrol more than diesel because diesel is mostly (in the old days) as part of livelihood (delivery lorry, taxi, etc). to compensate for this, government has an artificial special tax for diesel cars. in euro, no such things exist so diesel was desirable as a technology to develop to be green.

Turbo charge is the way to go...once you tried a TC car (stock) you will not look at a NA in the same light anymore...the higher Nm of torque is way a lot of diff...its like driving a bigger capacity car.

 

Even BMW who has traditionally used NA engines (save for the 2002Ti) now also uses TC to boost their power...big engine are nice...but it effects handling and off course now is taboo not to be green. So a smaller V8 with TC can keep up with a V10 higher capacity engine...why not. Its cheaper to produce as well.

 

On the contrary that TC is unreliable...I disagree. Take care of the car well...TC cars can be just as reliable as a NA car.

If its century sprint can be achieved in 10.3sec then it should be alright, beat alot of cars with bigger engine to shame definitely. And the torque figure is very high, so move off is fast. Also the car is very feature-packed.

 

The only thing I not comfortable is the 7 spd DSG. If not, it is definitely the car to go for at the moment.

I not particular with whether the car CC big or not. If the power and performance still the same or close, even they have downgrade the CC also ok. Cause at the end of the day, pay lower road tax. :D

Having tested a passat 1.4 on launched day, I can say that the early torque is gd enough for daily drive n should be better than other 2.0l class cars(non tc). But onced being push hard, it kinda gets noisy n can feel slight lag . Think it's gd for those who wanna enjoy a executive car with small cc n some premium equipment.

executive enjoyment normally dont go well with such specs of cars...its really a joke...

Haha...I guess many ppl still cannot look past the horsepower figures to make a conclusion.

 

Before we read a car review we got to first tell ourselves what the car maker's goal in building this car. It's afterall a family car and not a track monster filled with lots of hp.

 

The torque figures suggest otherwise, at 200nm maybe from 1500rpm-300rpm, a lot of 2L NA enigines dun even reach that figure, even if they do it's at the high rev band of 4000rpm and above. In layman terms your butt feels the max power churning out at 4000rpm. For the 1.4L TC it's tune for low end torque which is good for city driving in mind. Better fuel economy, less CO2 emission. The twin charge will have a higher hp rating coz there's are two chargers, one for low end & the other for high end torque.

 

Anyway the horsepower figures derive from calculations where the max torque @ rpm is a major contributing factor. So if the figures in the rpm is low you will see low hp figures. NA engine where you have to rev high rpm to get the power, of course the end result for hp figures will also be high. So you see the hp figures are pretty much dependant on the max torque @ rpm figures. In reality for butt feeling power the max torque @ rpm tells a more realistic story.

 

Another thing about the turbo lag where the review mentioned. IMO It's better to have lag in the power delivery for a family car than have those kind of surging forward turbo monster track car, imagine driving that in city conditions, you will end up crashing ppl's butt almost every time. I believe the car maker made use of the electronic nanny like the traction/esp control to limit the torque delivery.

 

Like I said it's a family car with a lot of city driving in mind. If you are looking for performance, you will have to look at other engine options.

skoda superb 2.0 at 150K is better alternative to this.. Built with A6 platform and packed with features.. Price and Performance surpass passat at all counts.

As they say , it'a a VW at a cheaper price..
