You can get full system, meaning 2 x analog cameras, 1 x 4-channels DVR with 500GB HDD and cables for... less than $400.

 

Don't buy IP based camera. It is flexible to install but need to have a separate PC to run 24x7 for the recording.

The DVR now is linux based. It has a VGA port. Just need to connect a monitor to it and you can view live. It also has USB port where you can connect a mouse to it for user interface.

If need to view record, just need to search for the day and time.

More expensive DVR will have better software. Easier to use.

 

IP based camera, mean it has IP address and you can use Internet explorer to view. You can also connect it to the internet so that you can see the video on your mobile phone etc. More powerful but the weak point is the continuos recording.
