  7. Plans to install closed circuit televisions (CCTV) at locations across Singapore to deter illegal parking have been delayed. The cameras were initially targeted to be implemented by the second quarter of this year. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said companies which won the bids earlier were unable to comply with parts of the tender specifications. LTA did not provide further details. New proposals are now under evaluation. LTA expects to implement the CCTVs progressively at 30 locations from the first quarter of next year. It should be completed by end-2014. So far, a pilot project at Marine Parade Central and Beach Road has produced results. Since cameras were installed in those areas in 2011, the number of parking violations recorded jumped by three to six times, to about 1,200 each month. This is compared to 400 for Beach Road and 200 for Marine Parade Central before the cameras were installed. Tan Boon Huat, managing director of Grassland Express, said: "Previously, cars used to park indiscriminately, resulting in one lane less for vehicles, so there will be traffic congestion during peak hours. "Before, it was just too congested… Now it's… better… not only for taxis but (for) all the cars. So the lanes are not jeopardised by vehicles which are not moving." 8. The number of illegal parking and road obstruction summons issued to its taxi drivers has significantly increased, the National Taxi Association (NTA) said in a media release on Friday (Apr 17). It said the number rose from a "negligible" figure during the period of June 2013 to March 2014 to 280 in the same period ending March this year. These summons were issued to taxi drivers who dropped off or picked up commuters in areas installed with the Land Transport Authority's (LTA) Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. NTA added that the spike was especially evident in mature estates, where facilities such as markets, polyclinics and shops are often located near areas where the cameras are installed. In these areas, taxi drivers and commuters continue to pick up, hail, drop off and alight in these areas out of convenience. Taxi drivers who are caught on camera can receive summons of up to S$130 and three demerit points. Said NTA: "This could lead to the suspension of taxi drivers’ licenses, which will affect the income and livelihood of taxi drivers." TISSUE PACKETS TO FEATURE GUIDELINES FOR COMMUTERS NTA revealed it plans to tackle this rise in summons with a series of campaigns promoting awareness among taxi drivers and commuters on road safety practices - starting with the distribution of 10,000 packets of tissue paper printed with guidelines on how to safely hail or alight a taxi. NTA Executive Advisor Ang Hin Kee, who will participate in giving out the collaterals to members of the public along Rochor Road outside Fu Lu Shou Complex, said taxi drivers have informed him that they get caught for waiting at areas with cameras because passengers often identify these as pick-up points when booking a taxi, and when they choose a cashless mode of payment, which takes a longer time. Drivers have also given Mr Ang feedback that there are passengers who insist on dropping off at no-stopping zones to avoid the long queues at taxi stands. “I think it is important that both taxi drivers and commuters are aware of such implications, so that neither taxi drivers nor commuters are affected by the new implementation,” said Mr Ang. SMRT taxi driver Colin Neo feels that the campaign will be useful: “Many of us try our best to pick up or drop off our passengers at locations that are of convenience to (them). But when we are not able to, not all commuters understand the reasons. "While we try to explain to them why we cannot pick up or drop off passengers at various locations, such as CCTV camera-controlled areas, it will definitely be very helpful if people are aware of these regulations. This way, commuters understand the road safety regulations, and we are happy to provide a good service.” NTA says it plans to distribute the collaterals to other areas with the CCTV cameras installed, through taxi leaders and other taxi drivers. 12. First it was the Land Transport Authority. Now the Housing Board is installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to deter illegal parking. It plans to put them up near service roads and loading bays around HDB carparks in areas including Bedok, Toa Payoh and Sengkang. Motorists parking illegally will face fines ranging from $25 to $200, depending on vehicle type. An HDB spokesman told The Straits Times the cameras will be installed in 55 areas from the second quarter of this year. Source: http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/...arking-20130404
  13. Been going there for my non-ICT IPPTs during my last few years with them and I had always placed my valuables in one of the many lockers provided. Now that this Mr Gan had revealed all was not well and that his stuff actually got Ali Ba Ba'ed  Maybe bros going inside camps for IPPTs play safe just bring along 11B can liao [laugh] But the greater issue which was implied is the security issue. Non-working CCTVs in camps? Isolated incident perhaps? [rolleyes] From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/premium/forum-...orking-20130326 Wallet, phone go missing in army camp, but CCTV not working Published on Mar 26, 2013 I WENT for my remedial training at Bedok Camp on March 17. I placed my belongings in one of the lockers provided at the ground level. During the break, I went to check on my belongings and found that my wallet and mobile phone had gone missing. I immediately reported the incident to the army personnel at the training centre. I requested to view the closed-circuit television camera recording as my locker was in an area that was under CCTV surveillance. However I was told that the CCTV camera at the ground level was down. I have always thought that military premises are secure, but this incident has made me think otherwise. There should at least be annual checks on CCTV systems in military camps, so that any spoilt cameras can be fixed without delay. Gan Ka Hwee

  15. The 17-year-old student's worst fears were realised when she was accosted in the lift of her Woodlands Drive HDB block early last Saturday. A tall, well-built man slipped in past the lift's closing doors and wrapped his right arm around her neck. That was just the start of her five-minute ordeal, during which the man not only robbed but also groped her. She reported the matter to the police, who searched the area but could not find the man. To make matters worse, the CCTV in the lift turned out to be only an empty casing. Read the full report in The New Paper on Tuesday (June 19).

  20. Illegal parkers beware. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is launching a trial of a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera system to deal with illegal parking problems along roads. In a tender called last week to contractors to run a six-month trial, LTA hopes the system improves its detection of such offences. Two public roads have been targeted for trial, but it is unclear where these sites are. The sites, however, will be 150m long and two lanes wide each, reported The Straits Times. The CCTV cameras will capture the licence plate details of vehicles parked in prohibited zones round the clock, and under all weather and lighting conditions. The contractor who wins the tender will then produce the evidence of drivers breaking the law. The quality of images and videos will be reviewed by LTA during the trial, which will determine the viability of using it as evidence in court. The offences include parking along roads with parallel continuous white lines, a single continuous yellow line, double continuous yellow lines, a single zig-zag yellow line and double zig-zag yellow lines. This is believed to be the first time LTA is trying this method to curb illegal parking. Motorists chalked up about 22,000 summons a month on such offences, which is about the same as the monthly average issued by the traffic police from 2007 till November last year, when LTA took over this duty. A spokesperson said that that LTA

  23. Recently been receiving threats on the public road I park my car. Thinking about installing a CCTV just in case. Any recommendations for any brand/camera/shop to do it? Would prefer that it does not require a DVR, discreet, SD card, clear at night without headlights (just street lights), wide angle. Some questions regarding in-car CCTVs in general, are they easily transferrable to another vehicle and what power sources are normally used? Would a cig socket cause an empty car batt if it recorded for 48hrs?
  24. Just to let everyone know that I got a $100 fine for parking in a loading bay to buy food at the nearby coffeeshop. There was no warden and everything was peaceful and quiet. While buying food I was careful to keep an eye on my car so as to do the sprint if there was a need. But the HDB $100 ang pow request came in the mail today. My car was caught on CCTV so no horse run. So just have to pay up. If you frequent the Bt Panjang area please do be careful. Life in Singapore is getting tough....
