  8. Japanese defense officials are searching for a fighter jet off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan. They lost contact while it was on a training mission. Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya said, "At around 19:27 Tuesday, an F-35A from the Air Self-Defense Force Misawa air base lost radar contact 135 kilometers east of the coast during training." Iwaya said the one pilot on board is missing. Officials say the jet was flying with three other planes of the same model, and there were no reports of problems before contact was lost. The Self-Defense Forces and the Coast Guard have dispatched patrol aircraft and ships to search for the jet. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20190409_46/

  12. Ever boarded a plane to fly off and be confronted with a metal chair and a missing seat cushion? I admit this has never happened to me until our recent experience on Turkish Airlines. We were flying from Singapore to Istanbul and onward to Copenhagen. This was on the Istanbul to Copenhagen leg. We had to take an airport bus to board the plane. It was a nice and sunny morning. We got on board, walked to our seats, and were confronted with a dirty detached seat cushion on a metal seat. Not a great way to start a flight, I reckon. I first alerted a male cabin crew, who didn't seem too surprised. But he disappeared. Really! Then I alerted a female cabin crew, who said she will help sort this out. True enough, she came back within a few minutes with a new cushion and fitted it. Well done! Here is a short video clip of the dirty cushion experience. To be fair, the rest of the flight and also the earlier leg was pretty good. We were on a holiday and headed to Copenhagen. Originally we planned to book SQ for the 4 of us, but the option of Turkish Airlines came along and we could save almost $2K for the 4 of us. So we decided to give Turkish a try. Here are the videos of our experience. At Changi Airport, when we checked in, I was informed by the check-in staff that I could use the SATS Premier Lounge (even though I was flying in Economy) because I was Star Alliance Gold status. Well, I recently turned Star Gold and I don't even have my card yet, so I wasn't expecting this. Anyway, it was great, though I could only bring one guest. At the lounge entrance, I asked nicely if I could bring both my kids and the reception staff kindly agreed. My wife stayed outside though, she went shopping. Later on, I found out that SATS Premier Lounges were also Priority Pass lounges, so we could have used the lounge, albeit for a fee. Here is the video of the lounge, which is used by a good number of airlines. I guess this is called a contract lounge. They had a decent hot food selection, not as good as the SilverKris, but good enough for most. There was the signature laksa, which tasted good. Also they had 3 OSIM massage chairs at one corner. Cool!

  14. EgyptAir said late Wednesday one of its aircraft disappeared while flying from Paris to Cairo with 69 people aboard. The Egyptian flag carrier said Flight MS804, which departed Paris at 11:09 p.m. local time, “disappeared from radar” at 2:45 a.m. Cairo time Thursday while at 37,000 feet, according to tweets on the airline’s verified Twitter account. The Airbus A320 with 59 passengers and 10 crew was last spotted over the Mediterranean Sea en route to Cairo, according to flight-tracking websites. The airline said that a search and rescue operation was under way. The jet disappeared 10 miles inside Egyptian airspace, which has its northern border in the middle of the Mediterranean, the airline said, one of the planet’s busiest air corridors connecting Europe and the Middle East. The incident would be the second major air disaster in Egypt since October, when an Airbus A321 operated by Russian carrier Metrojet crashed in Sinai killing all 224 aboard. U.S. and U.K. authorities have said a terror attack likely downed the jet while it was flying from Sharm El Sheikh to St. Petersburg in Russia.

  19. Hope for the best.... SINGAPORE: A group of students from Tanjong Katong Primary School were on an excursion at Mount Kinabalu when a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck on Friday (Jun 5), Channel NewsAsia understands. At least eight of them are uncontactable, along with two teachers, Mr James Ho, a parent of one of the students, said. This was later confirmed by the Education Ministry. The 12-year-old students and their teachers were understood to have departed Mount Kinabalu on Wednesday for a leadership programme and were expected to return on Monday afternoon. Anxious parents were seen rushing into the school for a meeting with teachers on Friday afternoon. One woman said her daughter was injured and is "on the way to hospital". Mr Ho told Channel NewsAsia that his 12-year-old daughter Rachel is one of eight students stranded at the via ferrata route on Mount Kinabalu. He said he has received no news about their well-being. "This happened in the morning and it's been more than 12 hours. And the frustrating thing is we are not getting any updates on the rescue operations," he said. Another 19 students from the school have returned to safety, Mr Ho added, and five of them and one teacher suffered minor injuries. Mr Sadri Farick, whose child had leg injuries after the quake, also expressed frustration at the lack of information. "I sympathise with my friends whose children are missing. We got news from one of the boys that there are boulders dropping in front of them, and they have been cut off, so we are expecting the worst but still have hope." MOE WORKING TO CONTACT MISSING STUDENTS AND TEACHERS In a statement, MOE confirmed that 10 people from Tanjong Katong Primary have yet to be accounted for. "Three schools, Fuchun Secondary School, Greenridge Secondary School and Tanjong Katong Primary School, are in Mount Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia on overseas learning journey. All students and teachers from Fuchun and Greenridge have been accounted for and arrangements have been made for them to return to Singapore. Of the 29 students and eight teachers from Tanjong Katong Primary School, 21 students and six teachers have been accounted for. MFA and ISOS are rendering assistance for their safe return to Singapore. We are continuing efforts to contact the remaining eight students and two teachers. Parents have been informed and kept updated on the situation." COLD NIGHT FOR THOSE STRANDED: PARKS DIRECTOR Earlier, Sabah Parks director Jamili Nais told Channel NewsAsia over the phone that 38 Singaporeans had begun climbing Mount Kinabalu at about 2am to 3am on Friday morning before the earthquake hit. "Up there, it is getting colder. We are in touch with the staff and in touch with some of the stranded climbers. It's getting cold but the weather is slightly better now. Three helicopters are on the way to drop food and warm clothing," Dr Jamili said. "But Im really fearful because before long, its going to be very cold and tonight therell be hypothermia, so we are working very hard at least to drop the food and warm clothing as well as camping equipment," he added. Paramedics, doctors and ambulances are waiting at base for those rescued, he said. In a statement, Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said majority of the more than 100 Singaporeans in Sabah at the time of the quake are safe, and that it is still working to reach those who are uncontactable. It has also despatched a Crisis Response Team to Sabah to render consular assistance. - CNA/ly

  21. Found? http://mypaper.sg/top-stories/grandma-48-vanishes-after-making-phone-call-20140514 HER phone is turned off, and her family has not been able to find her for the past 16 days. Ms Sim Lai Ying, 48, a youthful grandmother, disappeared on the morning of April 28 after making a phone call, Lianhe Zaobao reported. Desperate, her son Peter Liew posted an appeal on Facebook on Saturday, seeking help from the public. He said in his post, which came with photos: "Her phone is...shut off. No way to...contact her. Not even friends, relatives or colleagues are able to locate her. She is about 1.65cm tall, medium-sized, with long hair and brown eyes." A police report has been made. According to Mr Liew, 30, his mother showed no signs of depression, and had no health, relationship or financial problems. She got along with her family and her colleagues. The family was surprised when the fashion boutique where she worked told her family that she stopped going to work 18 days before her disappearance. Mr Liew said his mother made a call to his 15-year-old sister to tell her she was going out. She then disappeared from their home in Marsiling. Ms Sim is a widow. She has two sons, three daughters and a five-year-old granddaughter.

  24. AsiaOne Sunday, Oct 02, 2011 A Singaporean man has been missing in Athens for five days. He missed a medical conference that he flew there to attend and has not been heard from since. Mr Kouk Leong Jin, a graduate student at the Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, arrived in the Greek capital last Monday. He made a call at about 10.40pm (Athens time) to a classmate, Mr Leong Jin He, on Tuesday evening, Sep 27, but the latter missed the call as he was already sleeping. They were both scheduled to attend the conference together. Chinese local evening dailies reported that his wife of two weeks, Madam Seow Shu Ping, a 28-year-old teacher, and Mr Kouk's parents are preparing to fly to Athens this evening to look for him. A Facebook page has also been created, with details of his time in Athens up until the time he was last heard from being chronicled, in an apparent effort to find people who may know of his whereabouts. Madam Seow told Chinese daily reporters that she last heard from her husband on Monday, the day that he arrived in Athens. He sent her an SMS to tell her that he had arrived safely, followed by an email later in the evening. In the email, he told her that he was going to visit some smaller islands the next day. He had gone exploring some hills earlier and was full of praise for Greece's ancient architecture. Madam Seow noted that her husband's behaviour had seemed normal, even promising to keep in contact with her, but she has not heard from him since then. She said: "The conference was to have lasted from Wednesday to Friday, but since he went missing on Tuesday, I contacted some of his classmates, only to find out that he did not attend the conference at all." Mr Leong told Shin Min that Mr Kouk did not respond to his SMS on the first day of the conference. When he tried to call Mr Kouk at 10pm later that night, he found out that the line was not connected. A check with the hotel where Mr Kouk was staying showed that he last accessed his hotel room on Tuesday evening. A check with his telecoms provider showed he had surfed the Internet using his phone at a little past 10pm (Athens time) on the same day. Duke-NUS told the Chinese evening dailies that a representative from the school will be sent to Athens to render assistance, while the family of the missing man has also reportedly contacted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the local embassy in Athens for help. Local police there have been alerted, while a notice was also posted on a Greek 'missing persons' website. Wife buys one-way ticket to Athens Madam Seow told Shin Min Daily News that she would not come back until she found her husband. She and Mr Kouk's parents are reportedly flying to Athens this evening to look for him. She told Shin Min: " If I cannot find him I'm not coming back." After learning that Mr Kuok last went missing on Tuesday, she also found out that he has not checked out of his hotel room to date, nor was he on the return flight that was booked for him back to Singapore. She said: "I can feel that he's just waiting for me to rescue him!" The hotel staff reported that his room has remained untouched on Saturday evening, with his belongings in place. Mr Kouk is about 1.7m tall, wears spectacles, and was last seen waering a light blue collared shirt. He was carrying a black bag, and wearing a pair of black shoes. Asiaone
