June 19, 2008 Johor Sultan vows to find ways to reclaim Pedra Branca JOHOR BARU - SULTAN of Johor Sultan Iskandar Ismail has vowed to find ways to reclaim Pedra Branca. Sultan Iskandar said he wanted to remind all that he had not forgotten his island and that it was rightfully under the state's sovereignty and not Singapore. 'Sampai bila masa, saya cari hatta ikhtiar balik benda itu ke Johor (It doesn't matter how long it takes, but I will find ways until the island is returned to Johor),' he said in the closing of his speech before opening the Johor state assembly here on Thursday. The ruler said he was confident that the state would continue to prosper economically thus bringing benefits to the people and reminded the people to reject racial or religious extremism. The Sultan's words caught everyone off-guard. Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said the state government 'clearly heard' what the Sultan said. 'We heard and listened loud and what he has declared,' he said, without elaborating further. On May 23, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Singapore had sovereignty over the disputed Pedra Branca, while Malaysia owned Middle Rocks. On the other disputed territory of South Ledge, the ICJ ruled that it belonged to the country in whose territorial waters the rocky outcrop is located. The ICJ decision brought to a close the 28-year-old territorial dispute between both countries, and was immediately described as a 'win-win' outcome by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim, who led the Malaysian side at The Hague where the court is located. -- THE STAR/ANN Good! MY it seems has instructed the media there not to refer to Pedra Branca as Pulau Batu Puteh but only as Batu Puteh, dropping "Pulau" which means "Island" in Malay. The reason is that an island has territorial waters whilst an outcrop or rock does not. An island is an island even if they do not choose to call it that. Those morons think that their dirty trick is going to influence any forthcoming talks concerning the sea boundaries of SGP and MY.

Both countries have said they will accept the court's decision on Pedra Branca and two outcrops in the Singapore Strait as the final word in the 28-year disagreement. The hearings in the Hague, where the 15-member court is located, follow three rounds of pleadings between the two countries from March 2004 to November 2005. The city-state has exercised sovereignty over the island since the 1840s when the British colonial government built a lighthouse there. The island, about 40 kilometres east of Singapore, is strategically located at the eastern entrance of the strait. Malaysia staked its claim to the island in 1979 and calls it Pulau Batu Putih, triggering the row. An agreement was signed on February 6, 2003 to submit the dispute to the international body. The court said on its website Wednesday that the city-state will have four days starting November 6 to present its case. Malaysia will make its case from November 13 to 16. The court has set aside three weeks for the case, a Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said.
