For certain cars I think its true that ABS off have shorter braking distance. Tested out with my car and when ABS off I get shorter braking distance. Also, i don't understand why disabling ABS will help you to brake better with shorter distance. When your brakes lock up, only a certain patch along the entire circumference of your tires will be in contact with the road. Depending on your vehicle speed when your brakes lock up, the tire contact patch might already given up its grip after a certain distance. Compared this to ABS or extremely fast brake tapping whereby the entire circumference of the tire take turns in contacting the road. Compared this to ABS or extremely fast brake tapping whereby the entire circumference of the tire take turns in contacting the road. Had two same cars but one with ABS and one without. Didn't lock the tires. If you lock the tires then the car with ABS will stop faster and still have steering control. I braked without locking the tires and the car without ABS stopped in a shorter distance from 60km/h.
Hamburger Hypersonic March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 abs is not about stopping distance but maintaining steering control.
Nicholas 5th Gear March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 Yup it's not to stop earlier. It's so that the car won't skid as you zham brake.
Happily1986 5th Gear March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 (edited) abs is not about stopping distance but maintaining steering control. From what i understand, ABS WILL help you stop faster as well, all other things being equal. Edited March 15, 2013 by Happily1986

Happily1986 5th Gear March 15, 2013 Share March 15, 2013 (edited) I guess skidding means not locking up the brake. Let us get a point clear first. In no way did i actually make the assertion that the main intent of ABS was to achieve shorter braking distance. It is to allow drivers to maintain steering control. This is a trivia point, i didn't feel i had to state that so overtly. What i am merely arguing is that when ABS is switched on, barring specific circumstances such as travelling on slushy terrains (like extremely muddy waterlogged roads), braking distance is going to be somewhat shorter. As for the reason why, i already provided. Let me quote it again. err you went to muck around with your ABS? it is not something you can toggle on the fly you know. please don't do something that can get your insurer voiding your cover. Point made i.e. braking surface (contact patch) is constantly being renewed due to nature of ABS. The mean traction coefficient over the duration of braking is obviously going to be higher. That apparently is going to help your braking performance. Edited March 15, 2013 by Happily1986
